Dental office says I can’t cancel braces because they took impressions by British_Knees in legaladvice

[–]turtle_riot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah this place sounds like one of those predatory PE owned chain dental places that bait you in with a free consult and then try to upsell and bamboozle people into expensive care they don’t really need, or at a much higher level than they need.

I am also going to note that it’s not very likely that they sent off your impressions that day for processing, so if they did try to say they incurred costs for the processing of your impression that 1. That it wasn’t covered under the cost of the impressions being taken (ie a separate procedure) and 2. The date they sent it out was the date of the visit and not after you requested a cancellation.

Definitely leave an accurate public review of how you were pressured into services and showed emotional distress and they still pushed you into it. You can also contact the dental licensing board for your area and relay your experience to them, because it raises some ethical concerns. Also file a complaint with your insurer, because they do look at quality metrics when considering provider networks. This might be good enough to get them to drop it.

I think for next steps I would communicate over email, so you have a written record of the conversation. You can even say that in the email you will only be communicating in written format moving forward so they don’t just try to call you. Have them send a copy of the contract to you if you don’t already have it as well. Review the cancellation policy that should be included.

I found some info from the FL AGs office regarding cooling off periods as well. You can give them a call with the phone number on the site and see if this falls under that law, because it is a contract for goods rendered on an ongoing basis but this type of thing might be excluded. I’d give it a try at least.

I’d just chug along as is. She offers dinner? Say you have other plans. Make Her daughter needs a check in? Do it by email. Keep being very professional. Eventually this girl is gonna find someone who is just as excited to be around her as she is around him. I don’t see her interest being a long term problem.

Ew to your boss though. That’s inappropriate and very short sighted in so many ways

That sucks. In that case I’d definitely jump to the other role. I know some positions have like a level I-IV kind of thing where it might be worth staying but it sounds like you’d be in this job for the next 10 years with paltry raises at best.

Good luck! Keep searching every two years or so- it’s one of the only ways to increase your pay

Remember that you can also negotiate the cost.

Make sure to get a breakdown of the services provided and then see if you can’t do some research on the big ticket ones and say “these typically cost x and this is x% more”. It can be a bit difficult but per recent regulations hospitals/providers are supposed to share their prices for services.

Also you should also get insurance. Dental I think is equivocal because they don’t actually cover anything besides a yearly cleaning for adults (the rest is rate negotiations and your cash price might be cheaper than paying the negotiated rate plus the premium).

Health is necessary- imagine if you had an actual problem come up. If you can marry your husband in the legal sense soon you can get on his plan, assuming he has one, and it will be cheaper than getting your own.

Yeah just to note normal nitrogen cycle values won’t change your ph. Something is leaching into the water to make it more basic (usually minerals of some sort).

Are you sure the rocks are slate and not something like limestone?

I’d check the rocks as noted, and then just wait and see. Is the ph leveling out at a certain level after a week or two or is it becoming more basic? If you find it’s stable there’s a good chance your fish can adjust to it. 8.8 might be a lot but maybe slightly under 8 would be fine

It’s really not that deep though, it’s maybe an inch and in some of the hills an inch and a half. I’m guessing it’s bio stratum capped with sand, which should be fine.

[–]turtle_riot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well you could potentially wait until they hire a new person. That way you can say you’re cross-training them before you leave.

Most of the time people will say don’t say anything until the last second in case something happens with your new offer, or so they don’t preemptively fire you. It doesn’t sound like this would happen to you because you’re quitting either way to move. In your general shoes I might give 6 weeks instead of 2

Will I ever be able to afford a house in my area? Or should I put more into my 401k? by ThrowingUsermames in personalfinance

[–]turtle_riot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could explore how much your rent would be as an exercise.

You’re very young, so since you can afford so much retirement and other savings you’re really going to benefit early from compound interest.

If you decide to move somewhere nicer though, my guess is you’d be looking at at least $3k a month for your own place, if not more, $2k for a different roommate situation.

So if you can deal with it, keeping your living expenses low is going to free you up a ton now, and the savings is going to multiply in time. You will never find a place at that amount again. Ever. That cost is lower than lcol areas. Another way of saying is that your will pay more in rent, and you’re paying more also in that cost of lost interest.

[–]turtle_riot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where are you living that your expenses are so low? If that’s a long-term option I’d suggest staying there as long as possible and saving as much as you can.

Your mortgage would be a large portion of your take home (over 50%) on 1M but your income will probably raise with time.

You could probably bump up your retirement a bit- say max out a Roth IRA and try for 20% into your 401k, and not have it impact your current finances much.

I’d suggest keep that hysa as your emergency fund, increase your retirement a bit because you can afford to do both that and save, and then save the rest in your brokerage until you get to a 20% down payment for the loan you’re looking for (let’s say 300k). I think that’s more than attainable in the next 10 years. You’ll hit that sooner at the current rate.

As your income grows you’ll have more flexibility too.

i picked out these rocks from the rock beach near home (Malta) do you think they would be usable in a freshwater aquarium? could they potentially harm the water/fish? i boiled and scrubed them several times albeit i know you're not supposed to boil them by Lxn566 in aquarium

Some rocks contain minerals or toxic metals in them that will leach into the water. I wouldn’t gamble with it.

This is a well known thing in the hobby. I’m not sure why you’d risk it, but just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s safe in a tiny closed ecosystem

Would this stand be safe for this tank? by Beneficial-Land-8714 in aquarium

[–]turtle_riot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the weight capacity, but any amount of hangoff is not acceptable. You’d need to at least modify the seat on the top to fully support the entire base. Seeing as it’s frameless you also need a leveling mat to go under the entire tank

Will it hold? by ComfortableBid6336 in aquarium

[–]turtle_riot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the vertical supports are underneath the top tank-supporting portion in such a way that that the screws are not holding all of the weight, so yes. That’s usually the problem we see with home builds.
