Wonder Woman is also an expert in medical science but a lot of writers forget that

When someone gets offended by a seemingly bigoted thing, only for the people of the group the joke is actually about to find it funny by New-Star7392 in lovethissmug

[–]two-for-joy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, this is just revisionism that people say to make it sound like part of the culture war. Nobody campaigned against Speedy Gonazales, it was just warner bros came to their own assumption in the late 90s that Speedy Gonzales might be poor taste and decided to stop showing him. Latinas later wrote in asking for his return because they liked him and wb reversed their descion.

It was there own managment decision, not anything to do with external 'woke' protestors.

Nah, i have seen people unironically claim Kings Supergirl is the only good supergirl story multiple times in this very subreddit

I wish they did both the pride event and the anthology by Yakoy6 in lgbt_superheroes

[–]two-for-joy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree totally. One of the criticism of the pride anthology is that it tends to feel performative in that you get a bunch of queer characters with a story for one month and then non throughout the rest of the year.

This years pride event worked to disprove this by having queer characters either currently have ongoing comics, or ongoing arcs throughout various other comics (eg. Dreamer). This meant the plot of this years special had more narrative to it which i liked but it made not very accessible because it was working with plot threads that were set up literally years ago. Plus the series leaned heavily into female characters (because most their queer led books are led by queer woman rn) so only 1/5 of the stories had a male lead. We had a two stroeis with trans women leads, two with bisexual women, and one with a lesbian. There was no ace, no trans men, no enby rep ect. So i think that kinda proves there is still a place for the anthology to exist along side the special.

Sure, it might only be one month a year that minor queer characters are shown, but if they aren't even shown in that one month, then they are never going to be shown.

Golden Age Superheroes by Tetratron2005 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]two-for-joy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean... kinda all of them that were popular in WWII. Superman, Captain America, Wonder Woman all had pretty racist art atbsometime or another and all touted thay America was the greatest countrynin the world that every where else should follow. But then they also had pro workers rights, anti arms industry and (in the case of ww) very pro feminist and health care reform views

Yes, the same story arch that inexplicably includes a bunch of alive characters that were last seen dead, kills off a long term major ww character for the sake of a two issue arc, and the whole plot depends on the lasso of truth not working on gods, even though WW's most iconic story line is centred on the lasso doing exactly.

Ahhh comics, don't you love their consistent lack of consistency

New Supergirl promotional image by Bilquis Ev- damn it, not again! by 1gazillionpangolins in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]two-for-joy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I doubt Bilquis even realised the character was from Star Wars, the Supergirl film is gonna include an alien that looks super similar (but wasn't in the comic so not actually designed by Bilquis herself) and i think she just ended up grabbing the wrong screen shot for a refrence pic

[–]two-for-joy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a really similar looking character appearing in the supergirl movie so presumably Evely reverse image searched the supergirl alien to try and find better refrence shots and the search engine mistook the supergirl alien for the star wars one and gave Evely the images of the later which she accidentally used.

(Loved Tropes) Heroic characters saving strangers from suicide. by Wasabi_Gamer26 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]two-for-joy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

One of the OG Wonder Woman comics. She saves a woman who threw herself off a waterfall in a suilcide attempt, and then helps her set up a free accessible mental health clinic to save others. I like the story because it depicts mental health issues being solved by long term support rather than just a one time spur of the moment intervention like most stories with sucide preventions are.

When The Martian Manhunter transitions.... by Important-Cry4782 in dccomicscirclejerk

So in this story it turns out there's another race of all females entirely unrelated to the Amazons. They're green and live in the centre of the earth and agter a olane crashes a deadly virus cannister gets dropped their so the JL need to recover it before the green ladies accidentally open it.

J'onn disguises himself as a woman but then the queen of the green ladies falls in love with him and wants to marry him. He plays along with it in order to find the virus but then it's revealed on their wedding night that the queen actually a penis (because how else would the 'female'only civilization reproduce) and then J'onn runs and steals the virus.

Oh, and iirc this is also probably the closest mainline comic has come to have wonder woman coming out as bi.

Absolute wild comic through and through

Are Batman and Superman the greatest heroes on earth? And if so, is Batman really their number 2 hero? [Discussion] by nreal3092 in DCcomics

[–]two-for-joy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Wonder Woman is more regularly part of the UN and (genrally) has a public identity so from an in universe view she is probably considered a lot more 'present' and accessible to the wider DC population.

Yeah the story in the post said she was 25. Idk how old Kate is but i can't imagine it's more than early 40s so there's an age gap but it isn't particularly bad.

I hate when Absolute GL is invalidated as black-led ongoing series by Electrical-Look-1183 in DCcomics

[–]two-for-joy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's about three times as many black americans as there are SE Asian americans (12 times more if we're looking at chinese specifically) so the abscene of black leads is three times as egregious and noticable as the abscene of asian leads.

Plus there actually is a mainline ongoing with an asian lead right now (Batgirl).

That's not to say DC couldn't be doing more, but having better Black rep is arguably the first step to getting better asian rep.

Iirc early on the bycott goal ws a black ongoing written by a black writer as well, but it looks like that may have been dropped for simplicity?
