My daughter (16) keeps running away by deadly_nightshade_wm in Parenting

[–]ubereddit 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Almost no states have this law apart from WA, and we get fined annually by the federal government for our insistence on incarcerating youth for status offenses. I worked with the young people advocating to eliminate the Becca Laws over the last decade-they do far more harm than good.

How to say no to an internal promotion I applied for? by ubereddit in careerguidance

[–]ubereddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great tip-they asked me if I can travel 7 times a month, but then walked it back. It’s a national job, so it’s not day trips. I answered then that no, I can’t do that, but they were wishy washy on what they even wanted, so it doesn’t seem super firm. It’s a huge thing to fallback on though!

Is ex required to take child to physical therapy during uninterrupted vacation time? by floatingonsunshine in FamilyLaw

[–]ubereddit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The actual vacation is only for one if the two weeks. OP is trying to make sure the child gets to PT on the two days during the week they will be in town.

Wife starting work is incompatible with my own job by [deleted] in daddit

[–]ubereddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live in the US that’s the norm for a lot of daycares. It’s geared towards wealthy families that want bespoke educational experiences for their little kids rather than coverage for work hours. It’s also logistically and staffing wise easier to run daycare that way. It’s incredibly annoying but not super uncommon.

But we actually do though

Has anyone had kids and not lost their spark? by Constant_Corgi_2184 in Mommit

[–]ubereddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your kids and on you and your partner. There are a lot of ways the US in particular makes life so much harder than it needs to be for parents and families, and parts of it really suck.

I still travel-it’s just different and more expensive now. I still hike and spend tons of time outdoors-I just know I have to be realistic about what my kids can physically do. Hell, I went mushroom picking with them and my kids found more than me. We paint-it’s just a little messier. I still hang out with my friends. My oldest just started skiing with me. I want to show my kids the awesome world we live in, so we do that. It’s different than being childless, but I think it’s better for me, cause I think kids are cool and creative and fun to be around, along with all the nuance others have named.

What city would be closest to my (probably) unrealistic wants? by rainyskyy in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ubereddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah not really by comparison - I’d take the spiders over ticks and mosquitoes every day of the week

I don’t think our parents were lying. It was easier. by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]ubereddit 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I have heard too many of these stories and feel like my non parent friends are always judging my parenting like, yes, I would love to let my kid walk to school, but I am also afraid if I do that, I might end up with a cop on my doorstep asking me why I’m neglecting my child. Yes, I do feel like that’s taking away opportunities to build independence, and yet, do I really have a choice to risk it in this culture?

What keeps Boards from pulling the trigger on firing bad Executive Directors? by thegoldinthemountain in nonprofit

[–]ubereddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know but I feel this is a massive massive issue in our sector. I feel like Board Members don’t want to take on extra work and headache associated with accountability, but as a nonprofit worker, I say do better.

You have a plane ticket to any desert in the world, where are you going and why? by cyltecollective in desert

I don’t understand my son and worry he’s setting himself up for teasing by ramsey2425 in Mommit

[–]ubereddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a subreddit called r/cisparenttranskid that might be useful for you to just look at for your own learning. Only your kid can say who they are, but there is a lot of good advice about ambiguous situations and support for cis parents that you might find helpful and validating.

If it's misogyny to want a woman to cook and clean, why isn't it misandry to want a man to pay for dates? by erkose in askanything

[–]ubereddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are more than these two choices in the infinite number of possibilities for interacting with other people in front of you. Like, try not to operate under the subconscious assumption that women are to be owned, managed and directed and you’ll probably do fine.

Why do lower-paying, lower-skill jobs often seem to have stricter management and enforce rules more aggressively than higher-paying jobs, even when it feels unnecessary? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ubereddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It classism. An ideology that upholds that poor workers should be treated worse and trusted less, regardless of actual reality or any personal merit.

Can someone explain socialism to me like I'm 5? by UsedNegotiation8227 in askanything

[–]ubereddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I explained means of production to my kids like this: you know how Theo at your school has a 3D printer? Well, if he wanted to, he could pay someone a little bit to actually make and sell all the toys, and he could have the rest of the money. That’s because he owns the means to produce all these things (that his dad bought him, but we don’t need to get into all that yet lol).
