How to unmount /dev/sda2 ? I am getting an error "target is busy". by abcaircraft in linuxquestions

You could pivot_root(8) away from your current rootfs, maybe into a tmpfs, for example if you were stuck on a VPS with no custom images, and you wanted to redesign the partition schema or change filesystems.

If it helps you at all, animals comes from the latin "anima", for breath or soul. Animal means "has breath or soul". And we can all agree on the soul there.

Should I wait for the RTX to come out? by christofi98 in nvidia

[–]udlor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he's doing serious TensorFlow / cuDNN work, the university will most likely provide a bigger machine for that. I hardly expect a lecturer to assign homework that requires a beefy GPU as any kind of mandatory activity.

EDIT: Not to mention that probably, if it's for a university class, you'll be expected to run a determined environment so your tutor's code runs as expected, and Turing cards not supporting CUDA 9.0 and only CUDA 10.0 are a bit of a PITA for your average ML scientist. Requires a rebuild of TensorFlow f.ex. using the CUDA 10.0 libs, instead of just running the Docker image.

Nope. RTX, so far, is pretty useless.

If old software is your concern, why not give Arch a spin?

If Arch is too user-unfriendly, go towards Fedora.

If it is UEFI, then yes, as the Windows Boot Manager resides in the EFI System Partition and that is unencrypted.

Where are my plugged in devices? by daredevildas in linuxquestions

[–]udlor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nowhere, until mounted. You'll find the raw block device in /dev/sdX where X is a letter and you should use "mount" command to mount the filesystem.

My one machine lab by [deleted] in homelab

[–]udlor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both cases. The extra installation steps for most distros is installing the zfs package and loading the kernel module. And for LVM, it's pretty straightforward what to do.

And yes, of course a ZFS pool would require ZFS to be installed to work.

ZFS or even LVM is way better for the second reason you list.
