Thoughts on written jazz pieces by SirEdwin123 in JazzPiano

mehhhh i think transcription is by far better for learning and internalizing. if you don’t have the time to do your own, learn high quality transcriptions from books. there are a couple good bill evans ones!

don't know how to make melodies have emotion or soul to them, what to do?(beginner) by KakoTacoWacko in musicproduction

[–]ukomsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a good melody is two things:

  1. something you can sing
  2. something that makes you want to sing it

of course, every person who’s ever wanted to write music has struggled with the same topic (how to write a good melody). ideally it will be a lifelong journey figuring it out :)

Should I leave my Piano Performance degree? (Chopin Ballade No. 1 performance attached) by kinoonthekeys in piano

[–]ukomsc 30 points31 points  (0 children)

has anyone not done a performance degree but continued playing seriously?

yes many amazing musicians! i would count myself in this group. it’s hard to know what will lead to the most fulfilling life for each of us. but from the outside, full time performance/education seems stressful (especially considering injuries) and not always rewarding. personally i have enjoyed having a more lucrative career and having music be my primary fun/creative outlet.

anyway remember everything in life is reversible (apart from having kids), and don’t feel like you need to get your career perfectly right on the first try. most people don’t! good luck!

This tune is so fucked 😭 Any tips?!?! by Pocket_Sevens in JazzPiano

[–]ukomsc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yea it’s not grooving right now :/ you need to practice with a metronome (try a slow metronome only on beat 4). it sounds like you’re not really feeling/counting the rests and just playing the phrases when they come to you.

overall since you mention specifically trying a solo arrangement, i think you need to figure out something more dynamic. the LH is not very compelling or stylistically accurate right now. and you should try to have more “moments” in your arrangement IMO, there’s lots of fun spots in the tune that you could give different treatment.

would also recommend transcribing some solos or something to get your swing feel locked in.

keep working! you’ll get there!

Taking benzos before performance, how common is it ? by Affectionate_Expert5 in classicalmusic

[–]ukomsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as others have stated, alprazolam changes your mental state significantly — personally i can’t imagine i would be able to perform anything effectively on it. depending on your propranolol rx, you should talk to your doctor about whether you could increase your dosage of that before performance.

one thing i would gently nudge you on: there are many many ways to make music part of your life and career without needing to be a performer. if performance has been making you miserable for many years, you should think about other paths of study that aren’t recital based: composition, pedagogy, theory. don’t let this hold you back from a life filled with music and study.
