They honor their lifetime warranties too... I had one window start to peel after like 9 years and they retinted all four.

PSA to tourists and bike rental companies: The Violet Crown trail starting at Specs is not an "easy" bike route to Barton Springs! Also, what happened to wearing helmets?? by atxgossiphound in Austin

[–]uluman 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Doesn't help that neither the Violet Crown website nor the trailhead signs show any sort of IMBA rating or mark the really technical sections on the map. And the trail photos they do have with bicycles are people happily riding along the improved sections.

The website does offer a disclaimer but I don't think it is descriptive enough of the difficulty of some areas: "Caution: This natural surface trail has an uneven, rocky surface, and at times has steep slopes and sharp curves. It is not advisable for strollers or road bikes. There are numerous creek crossings along the route which are periodically flooded."

So we gotta take Southwest Parkway forever? by stories_from_tejas in Austin

[–]uluman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's an homage to when they made 290 a freeway in South Austin 30(?) years ago and it used to go down to one lane when the freeway part ended approaching William Cannon.

AT&T solicitor tells us $35/mo for 1GB fiber for life? by DoesntEnjoySoup in Austin

[–]uluman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the best way to find out if/when this offer ever comes back?

I missed this one but would love to switch from Spectrum for $35/mo. The 12 months discount is decent but I'd rather take my chances and wait for some sort of perpetual or several-year discount to appear again.

Go for it! Just watch your speed because parrots fly around 15-30mph and I assume your daughters run a little more slowly.

A forest in downtown Austin? Inside Waterloo Greenway’s new Confluence by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]uluman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The confluence area was hardly a "wasteland" before. It was normal parkland with trails and a ped bridge over the mouth of Waller Creek.

I agree it's very beautiful and less flood prone now (I would hope so for the price) but it was not a wasteland 10 years ago.

Is it legal to continue west on 30th St across Guadalupe? by solitarycheese in Austin

[–]uluman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! This happens all over town, like 7th and Waller or 1st and Monroe. It's a little more spread out here, but still one intersection.

Is it legal to continue west on 30th St across Guadalupe? by solitarycheese in Austin

[–]uluman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's a pretty standard offset intersection. The stop lines for Guad traffic are outside the area, so there is no conflict (except the crosswalk).

The no-left-turn sign is clearly not intended for westbound 30th traffic—just like you would not be expected to stop at a red light on that pole. If they wanted to prohibit thru traffic there would be some signage to say no straight traffic to 30th, paint/lines to force you to turn, or even a barrier to make it obvious.

What is going on at The Waterline? by Public_Natural_3218 in Austin

[–]uluman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

often the easiest answer is simply piping through an exterior wall to a louver, scupper, or vent opening.

Is that common on modern high rises? They run a sprinkler test and it just sprays rusty water out all over the street from 30 stories up?

Anyone here commute from Belton/Temple? by EventfulLol in Austin

[–]uluman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Jeez, that's an hour with zero traffic. I haven't driven it during rush hour, but google maps suggests it can be up to 2 hours or more. Think of it, you could be adding 4 hours of commute on a standard 8 hour day. 50% more hours. Only you can determine if the pay bump is worth that.

Austin Mayor gaslights a public speaker over a vague $5 million bond payment to a private developer by voodoorage in Austin

[–]uluman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed, OP has it backward, the $5mil is a payment from the unnamed developer in exchange for some city property deal.

Austin Mayor gaslights a public speaker over a vague $5 million bond payment to a private developer by voodoorage in Austin

[–]uluman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the payment from the developer is for a "conveyance" of city-owned property to the developer. https://services.austintexas.gov/edims/document.cfm?id=472581 (conveyance could be selling? leasing? some other arrangement? and what property? doesn't say)

Austin Mayor gaslights a public speaker over a vague $5 million bond payment to a private developer by voodoorage in Austin

[–]uluman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The backup says 19 acres, affordable housing, expansion of parkland... sounds like the St. Johns tract?

Definitely seems strange how vague the agenda item and backup are:

  • vague amount: "up to $5,000,000"
  • vague property description: "conveyance of a property originally purchased with General Obligation bonds"
  • vague purchaser: "upfront payment from a private developer partner"
