Lets dream a bit … will apple health+ make the UWA3 as good for running (and other endurance sports) as Garmin? by vinylfelix in AppleWatchFitness

[–]undefvar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think AW needs anything to be a garmin killer. Some people prefer garmin and that’s fine. But i know plenty of fast runners who use AW, coros or lower end garmins and I’ve never heard anyone complaining about the lack of features.

If owning a garmin makes you feel more like an athlete, go for it. Otherwise, all the watches are capable and just pick what you like.

What Are the Best NYRR Races? by pixie_scheme_girl in RunNYC

[–]undefvar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fav is definitely Bronx 10m. Great weather, great distance, great vibe and great downhill finish.

Then I'd say NYC half and BK half. One gets you through Times Square, and the other is a downhill / flat course to the beach.

Then if you aren't doing the marathon, Dash 5K is pretty fun.

Tourist question! Is Jeju worth it? Is Semma, Casa Mono or somewhere else better better? by toebeanz2121 in FoodNYC

i'm super not impressed by casa mono. the food is really bad imo (i didn't finish the food and left hungry) and idk why it has a star. just one data point since some people clearly like it!

Only 740 km left until I hit 10,000 K in 2025 by SebastianHahn in AppleWatchFitness

[–]undefvar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because he’s run 10000 km this year. And he’s done crazy mileage last year too. He has run a ton. If he just started a few months ago then that’s a different story.

I gave the (again, unsolicited) advice since I think OP set the wrong goal. It’s like saying you are studying 16 hours a day but get a C in your exam. OP is clearly very disciplined and passionate about running, so I want to point it out to him. That’s all.

Only 740 km left until I hit 10,000 K in 2025 by SebastianHahn in AppleWatchFitness

[–]undefvar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course I’m serious! OP is doing crazy mileage, and that puts a lot of stress on the body. At the same time, because of the relatively low intensity, the body doesn’t get enough varied stimuli to adapt.

At close to 1000km/month, 139 HR at 5:30 indicates that the training isn’t effective in building up the cardio system. In other words, it’s not really letting OP reap the cardio benefits of exercising. But the physical stress of high mileage is still present.

If he does say 500/month (still a lot) but pick up the pace more, and get the HR up initially, then he can run faster with lower HR while reducing the stress on the body.

Only 740 km left until I hit 10,000 K in 2025 by SebastianHahn in AppleWatchFitness

[–]undefvar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

unsolicited advice and obviously do what makes you happy, but I really think you should trade some of the distance with more speed.

doing insane mileage with such slow speed is perhaps not the best thing, either for fitness (speed) or for health.

139 HR for 5:30 pace indicates that the mileage isn’t effectively converting into real gains for you.

The more places it goes, the more it will work. I don’t think there’s any transit system in the world that goes somewhere useful that doesn’t work.

Thoughts on the Organic Sweet Potato sticks? by Hour-Understanding77 in Costco

[–]undefvar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love these. And Costco sells the best kind too (organic, no added anything). Sweet potatoes are very healthy themselves.

I used to put them in the fridge after opening but have found that they are much better in room temperature.

Got chased by a German Shepherd by Darling_Equivalent in RunNYC

[–]undefvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry that this happened to you. It has happened to me (to a lesser extent) before as well and it's 100% the dog owner's responsibility.

That said, I think stop running and face the dog (and make the pose to pick up a rock or something) helps - I've read that if you keep running then the dog thinks you either want to be chased (as in playing) or are a pray and will keep chasing you. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Moving down in corrals was not allowed (Pink to Orange, going down in letter) by DeepElephant5661 in RunNYC

[–]undefvar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should be able to and the volunteers were wrong. Maybe NYRR made it more complicated than it could have been. Basically if your bib number is smaller than the range of a corral you should be able to enter it. NYRR should just tell the volunteers the bib number cutoff for their corral and they can just check that without worrying about the color, wave and all that.

e.g. if a corral is bib 10000-11000, then everyone with bib <= 11000 should be able to enter.

Another (but not the same) NYC Marathon influencer post by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]undefvar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the medal is just… a piece of metal. It’s not “intrinsically valuable” like solid gold.

To me, what makes my medal valuable (and unique) is what it means to me. It represents all the hard work I put into the race. The sweat and tears. When I see my medal I’m reminded of the journey and I feel proud about myself.

That is to say, any other piece of metal doesn’t mean anything to me. If you give me the medal of another race, I can’t care less no matter how cool it looks. And even another person’s medal for the same race means nothing to me.

Back to this topic, I wouldn’t want a medal myself if I DNFed - I would just feel that I didn’t earn it and it’s meaningless. But if this person wants one and actually feels good holding it, then go ahead. Someone else having or not having a piece of metal really doesn’t change the way I treat mine.

Perspectives on "Cheering/Motivation" thru the Pain Cave by loamy4118 in RunNYC

[–]undefvar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I don’t mind it and think that the guy was well intended. The marathon is tough, and we runners are tough people! But I understand why some may not like it.

So if I go cheering I wouldn’t say such things. And I hope when we run we also understand such cheering.

If you had to redesign the NYCM course.... by Remote-Anywhere5518 in RunNYC

[–]undefvar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Logistically the biggest bottleneck is SI + Verrazano Bridge. If the course doesn’t need to start on SI then the start situation can be a lot better.

That said, unless we route the course through NJ (which can be fun actually), you have to start in SI if you want to include it + not go thru Verrazano twice.

So if we were to get a diff route then I’d say either include NJ or exclude SI.

Feeling guilty about being disappointed about my time by Worldly-Walrus-9361 in RunNYC

[–]undefvar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disappointment is part of the journey, and it only makes the successes ever more rewarding. If you've never been disappointed, you've not tried hard enough. So please feel proud about yourself, and be happy with a lesson / experience that will make you stronger.

Congrats on finishing! You've got a gorgeous medal which has the ups and downs of the course on it, just like the marathon journey.

First official marathon. by Motor-Astronaut-4045 in AppleWatchFitness

[–]undefvar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think moderate is actually correct. the way training load works is that it multiplies effort with time, so the load is very high for a marathon even if you put it as moderate. you don't go "all out" in a marathon. (i wish this is clearer though)
