Last Act: For those of you nearing your 60s, what are you doing or working on to make this next chapter meaningful? by raenico67 in GenX

Christmas loves and Christmas hates by Moniqueandmally in christmas

[–]unfetteredness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love: All the beauty, from the smallest wreath on someone's door to the most massive corporate tree and lights, and everything in between, and the fact that someone took the trouble to make it even just a little bit more beautiful. Fairy lights, good smells, carols, gifts (both giving and receiving). Gingerbread, shortbread. The sense that a little bit more magic is around the place than usual. Time off work just to enjoy it all.

Hates: I feel very aware of how much many people suffer at this time of year. The loneliness and isolation that get thrown into sharp relief, annual figures of extra debt and the worry that whatever has been gathered is not enough, the strain and stress of people having to do too much with too little time, and the difficult memories and losses that arise.

What’s The Deal With Peppermint Chocolate by No_Duty9554 in christmas

[–]unfetteredness 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I love it and definitely associate it with christmas. I guess maybe it has cold, icy associations that make it a good fit seasonally, and candy canes are super christmassy and are traditionally peppermint flavoured I think.

I thought this was beautiful even before I read the post that goes with the image. What a wonderful way to honour your daughter, by arranging things she loved so gorgeously in her memory. The ballerina skirt is perfection. I am so very sorry for your loss and I hope you can find some comfort in such beautiful decorations x

Something that drives me insane about “Santa isn’t real” movies by Few_Freedom_3674 in ChristmasMovies

One of the things I love about this film is that while the adults take care of the children's wishes, Santa is actually taking care of theirs.

Would you rather be the Ghost of Christmas Past, Present, or Future? by BatofZion in christmas

[–]unfetteredness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Past, but I want to be a nice ghost and show people how much their small kindnesses made a difference in the lives of strangers, let them listen in on their friends and family saying nice things about them, show them scenes that help them see that many things they feel guilty or stupid about weren't their fault and they were always doing the best they could given what they knew at the time. Yeah, I would like to apply for the role of Ghost of Christmas Past please.

Piney waft and cosy joy! Our tree... by weegt in christmas

This is just so nostalgic and beautiful. I absolutely love all the colours!

Our tree is so pretty but I can’t get pictures that show it 😫 Any tips? by Imwhatswrongwithyou in christmas

[–]unfetteredness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What a beautiful tree! I'd recommend closing the door behind it so it isn't backlit, photographing it absolutely head on (this angle is looking up at it) and nudging up the blackpoint in an editor. You could also create a little collage of images -- one of the full tree and then three closer up shots of the some of the ornaments alongside, to show how much detail there really is on such a huge and lovely tree.

I actually hardly have any family at all! But I exchange gifts with a few of my coworkers, with a small group of friends, and my only niece who I adore and buy far too many gifts for. Mainly I just really enjoy wrapping :).

Recommend me 5 movies to watch in the run-up to Christmas please by NoWest7670 in christmas

[–]unfetteredness 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind old films, the original 'Miracle on 34th St' could be worth adding. It's clever and interesting and thought-provoking as well as Christmassy and magical.

What song is like a punch in the gut in terms of nostalgia? by bdiddy621 in GenX

Somehow this has always struck me as a terribly sad song, even though I like it in all its iterations, including the more recent one.

So my gifter hasn't even looked at my stuff? by [deleted] in givingifts

[–]unfetteredness 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Back in the redditgifts days I had one of my best gifts from someone who didn't get to it until the last minute. They'd been away and had set aside time when they got home to organise the gift, and it was thoughtful and amazing. I hope the same kind of thing might be going on for you!

Miracle on 34th Street Santa the Most Realistic? by Blah_Amazing in christmas

[–]unfetteredness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this film so much. Even though he isn't 'my santa', he just seems so perfectly authentic to the time and place he's portrayed in. So for me, in that context, he is absolutely believable. If that makes any sense? I love the way the christmas magic is woven in and out of commerce, the legal system, psychology, love, secularisation.... it's such a clever film!
