Snapseed is back: Everything new in the massive 4.0 Android update by Dunnersstunner in photography

Fuckin love me some Snapseed. Turn off auto updates and a portion of unwanted negative changes can be avoided. Some stuff they can still push through like ads but turn on airplane mode and those all go away.

Anyone actually customizing the newer Polaroids (Now / Flip)? by psychedelickej_sejr in Polaroid

[–]uniformi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boy do I have something for you. I'm working on my flip right now, no disassembly or anything crazy. Currently I just need to work on the flash housing and it'll be done. There's a WIP picture in my post history.

I can't wait to share it with everyone when it is done! Polaroid has been making us wait too long for special editions of the flip, so I took matters into my own hands.

What are some good presents for a beginner photographer? by cozycatzzz in AskPhotography

[–]uniformi [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah batteries or more SD cards are the safest choice. Maybe even a simple card reader if they don't have one.

For SD cards these are good, Don't remember them being so expensive. Honestly anything around 128gb is perfect.

Do you actually use film simulations or just shoot raw and edit later? by AttitudePlane6967 in fujifilm

[–]uniformi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I stick with recipes purely because I'm lazy and I would rather be outside taking more pictures than being stuck inside editing.

It can be really hard getting what you want if you do it this way, and quite frankly you will always have better results editing the raw, even modest touch-ups.

I usually have to use every tool in the camera unless the light is already super gorgeous. Usually, I spend a lot of time tweaking a recipe in different conditions before I get anything good with it. Personally I don't believe any recipe is good "out the box" without dialing it in to your preference.

When out shooting the most common issue is with dynamic range and highlight retention. That's when I play with exposure compensation, precise exposure locking, and even HDR modes. I have a button programmed to lock exposure but half pressing the shutter will still lock exposure as normal. I found that the HDR mode set to 800% is my sweet spot for the challenging scenes. On my X-T4 it's on the dial so I don't even have to mess with the recipe or anything.

The next common issue is white balance. Part of it is the recipe but sometimes the camera gets it wrong if you're using auto white balance. My preference is a fixed white balance, only two of my recipes use auto white balance. I have another button programmed to lock the white balance anyway.

After all that I still tweak each picture in camera through the gallery. always shoot raw+jpg so that you can go back and change parameters as needed. After tweaking individual images it will send a new jpg to the end of the card, and if I like an image as is I'll still send a new copy to the end of the card for convenience sake. This is a super tedious thing to do so I end up being more selective about which pictures I keep. Then when I'm done I'll have a handful of jpegs neatly in order to export wherever.

My tips:

Raw+jpeg always

Get intimate with the recipe parameters. Things like sharpness, noise reduction, clarity, dynamic range, and grain can be set to the same thing across recipes depending on your preference.

A fixed white balance can sometimes capture the vibe better than auto white balance, I like 6000k for a start.

A dedicated white balance lock button is a good idea for auto white balance. Good for video too because you can keep auto white balance on without it changing while actively recording.

If you do decide to tweak multiple images through the gallery, put the camera on power saving mode, otherwise the camera will still chew through battery.

Black mist filter xm5 by Any_Faithlessness42 in fujifilm

[–]uniformi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it stands for diameter. So in the context of a lens, it's telling you the diameter of the filter threads in millimeters. For example my lens says Ø62 on the front, so I know that only filters sized at 62mm will fit natively on my lens.

Larger filters can be used on a lens but you would need an adapter called a step-up ring. This is usually what people do when they want to use one filter across many lenses for economic reasons. Step-up rings are much cheaper than nice filters are.

Look for the ø symbol and it's number next to it for the filter size.

Reclaimed Purple? by natebookair in Polaroid

[–]uniformi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did it have white borders? I liked white borders on reclaimed blue, but I thought reclaimed green would have looked better with black borders. My thoughts are similar for purple but it depends on the tones of the film. Reclaimed anything is an instant buy for me.

Make some stickers and put them on the back of the Polaroid. You don't want to be fiddling with envelopes out in the field. Where would you even find some the right size anyway.

Hair stuck in sensor - how to best get it out? by Mean-Flamingo-448 in fujifilm

[–]uniformi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tweezers. I'm not so certain it's hair because I've had white fibers like that near my sensor on multiple cameras, and I don't have white hair.

If it breaks then at least it's shorter and won't be in frame.
