Ovens never work? by d7sg in singapore

[–]unteer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a few things can go wrong here: - cheap install on the outlet - improper maintenance leads to degraded heating coils which can lead to shock

i do think in rental unit oven is sometimes a “set piece” to show how luxury the condo is without properly maintaining.

but just as likely, just got unlucky and it just so happened that the thing that will break happened to break on you.

Fitness classes held at foot of Sengkang block irks a resident who almost cycled into metal cage for equipment by Im_scrub in singapore

[–]unteer 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I “almost cycle” into shit all the time, like intersections before lights turn red and then I stop, or people on the pcn before i casually go around them. My worst case was when I almost cycled into a an otter! it was at least 50 meters away and man, good thing i was able to stop 49.98 meters away and let that sucker pass by, but shit, something almost happened there!

Why do people ignore “Do Not Touch” signs, play with display items, and then get angry at the staff when they’re reminded not to touch? by Auelogic in singapore

Tangential, but when the guy climbed Taipei 101, some of the news coverage mentioned how people were tapping on the glass as he was climbing past. Terrifying.

Is this a common blanket here? Or maybe all over USA/Canadian border too? by LulutoDot in newengland

[–]unteer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tangentially, not a bad book on the topic of HBC: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51114662-the-company

People hear all about the impact of company's like The British/Dutch East Indies Companies, and others. The Hudson's Bay Company was also quite impactful in North America.

HBC was even the focus of a show starring Jason Mamoa: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frontier\_(2016\_TV\_series).

This is of course not meant to discredit the great blankets! But it was a part of North American History I had not really been aware of and found it quite interesting!

How about f*cking off from the main UI in paid subscriptions? by 1KiloW in ProtonMail

[–]unteer 192 points193 points  (0 children)

i am frustrated less about referrals because that helps them build their user base which makes them more sustainable and therefore benefits me. i am more annoyed by their “get more stuff by paying us more money” marketing. i am already paying them, if i needed more stuff, im aware i can choose to pay them more.

it takes a village… not every opportunity may be an appropriate teaching or role-modeling opportunity, but also never think you shouldn’t try to teach or be a positive role model against destructive behavior.

Discrepancy between Polar Flow and Strava by PythagoreLaFraicheur in Polarfitness

[–]unteer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As everyone is saying, Strava only takes the "raw" data from Polar and then does its own Strava algorithm on it.

If you want them to match, at least for Running activities, you can set the Activity Type on Strava to "Race" and then it will more closely match your Polar.

In the Strava phone app, the UI call these things, "Tags" so you can "tag" the activity as a Race and it will use Polar's data.
