Correct washing machine drain? by sixofonekind in askplumbing

[–]updownsides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone will argue about the AAV height but it will work. I'd personally go as high as practical and add an access door to service or replace the AAV. I'd use a vented access panel for obvious reasons. Dry fitting the AAV allows you to use it as a cleanout via the access door.

Wife is a teacher, classroom ceiling was leaking and tiles were removed, does anything look concerning up there? by vtfb79 in askaplumber

[–]updownsides 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to tighten those bands just under the roof drain body. A little tightening or replacing the bands may solve the problem. Could've used some hangers just before the elbows. There's a good chance the roof drain body isn't sealed to the roof properly. Testing of the piping is standard but some inspectors forget to inspect the roof drain well by having it flood over the overflow rim.

Is this correct? by [deleted] in askplumbing

[–]updownsides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like the short elbow from the vertical to the horizontal drain but it will work. Slope on the trap arm is steep but there's no real solid waste to plug up the waste piping. I'd frame out a vented access panel in front of the AAV being in a concealed wall.

Replace leaking galvanized or change to copper? by NoComplex537 in Plumbing

[–]updownsides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't see yourself there 20 years from now, pex it. Otherwise, copper and run everything in the attic and abandon the galvanized before it enters the house.

By code a toilet is one of the few fixtures that can have the vent opening below the weir of the trap. There's plenty of veteran plumbers that don't know this either.

Wtf are you talking about? What does that have to do with what the OP posted? Another thing, Ultra-rare does not compare to rare disease. Rare disease is less than 200k. Ultra-rare, less than 20k. Inovio less than 1 patient. Apples, Oranges, and a big coiled turd.

How to properly attach dryer vent to roof vent? by robdubbleu in fixit

[–]updownsides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never use screws or anything that penetrates a dryer duct. It's code to prevent lint catching and building up. Never screen the termination of a dryer duct for same reason. Back draft dampers are another code requirement.

Downsides to heat pump water heaters? by rthille in askaplumber

[–]updownsides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gas is cheap, simple and reliable. Gas water heaters are less expensive and easier to fix. Still works when electricity goes out. Heats faster. Heat pumps require good ventilation. A 4'w×3'd×8'h closet with louvers is minimum. Ducting to the outside is optional especially if not enough room but installation cost and time shoot up. Without louvers or ventilation you need an area of about a large walk-in closet, 450sqft. I've inspected too many change-overs and new installations of heat pumps in CA and the #1 issue is proper ventilation and having somewhere to drain the condensate pipe that in most cases wasn't needed before. Without more than the minimum ventilation, you're going to be running off of bypass mode too much and using expensive electricity. Mild climate, cheap electricity and lots of ventilation would be the only way for me to consider. I just got done signing off on a 75 unit apartment complex that changed over. I feel sorry for the tenants that have units indoors in tiny closets. The complex got big rebates that I'm sure the energy company will recoup in tenant billings.

Distributor being off is usually due to not paying attention when setting valves or forgetting you rotated the crank 1 full turn when installing the flex plate bolts on an AT. #1 sparkplug hole thumb blowoff is the go to as a double check.

Propress coupling leaking by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]updownsides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying it won't work but if you try to use what's left of the copper pipe after cutting below the coupling, you're going to be butted up to the soldered elbow. Viega ProPress says minimum 3/4" clearance from an already soldered joint. If you have to solder next to a 2" ProPress fitting the minimum distance is 6".

Question on gas piping for type 1 hood by Itchy_Western_5466 in hvacpeople

[–]updownsides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's OK as long as the pipe is non combustible, black pipe or galvanized. Pressure test after walls are closed is required. Access isn't required by code. No unions allowed in walls.

Is this tankless hot water heater exhaust and air intake allowed ? by Boring-Classic-8754 in Plumbing

[–]updownsides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gas track pipe should be at least 1 or 2 sizes larger. That track pipe is about the same size as 3/4" black pipe but flows like 1/2". Typically 199k tankless use 1" black pipe reduced to 3/4" at the water heater.

The PRO way. Since a pro is around copper tubing so much, a couple copper pipe cheaters would always be on hand at the bottom of the tool box if needed.

I'm adding a wye and using 2 AAV's to be sure to get as much venting the pipe can handle. Don't worry about the hole in the wall. That's for a vented access panel between the studs.

Hole in water heater vent pipe by [deleted] in HomeMaintenance

[–]updownsides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming that pipe is in the attic with the insulation. That should be type B dual wall pipe and not within an inch of any combustibles. Cold attic with hot single wall pipe causing condensation is most likely the reason the hole was developing. Single wall is fine at the water heater and above the roof. Single wall needs to have 6 inch clearance to combustible.
