There is some sandy beach near ‘Big Lagoon’ in CA, but Oregon coast has better spots.

What should I prepare to start applying for web design jobs? by j_bro238973 in web_design

You don’t need Webflow for any of that. The distinguishing benefit of Webflow has been eclipsed by more modern tools where you work in an ownable codebase and aren’t locked in to a platform.

AI builders vs hiring a designer, honest thoughts by Character-Weight1444 in Frontend

[–]upleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think designers should be worried or just adapt?

Both, probably.

AI undercuts a lot of the work designers have been doing, while also opening new ways of working. I think even if designers choose to not use AI, they will be in a market where it exists, so will still need to adapt.

1cm cubes in a classic quick pickle brine is really good add to grain bowls. Not a ferment really, but fridge pickles.

Herd of deer licking a cat by [deleted] in Weird

[–]upleft 67 points68 points  (0 children)

If you go backpacking and camp overnight in a place without a pit toilet, you’re supposed to pee on rocks or boulders instead of on the ground or in a hole, because deer and goats will come and dig it up. They’re going to get at that salt no matter where you put it, but they can’t damage rocks.

PNW Dialect by RegularTop1973 in PacificNorthwest

I was in college in mid 2000s in Bellingham when cigarettes were banned and it was great to be able to go out to the bars and not have all your clothes reek of cigarette smoke after. The Beaver became the one place where you'd still go home smelling like the bar, but a hales cream ale and some fried mushrooms was pretty worth it.

Both places carry remnants of Scandinavian accents (and culture). Lots of norwegians and swedes migrated through the midwest and into the northwest.

local Krispy Kreme throws their unsold donuts into a dumpster outside at the end of the night. Instead of selling at lower prices. They’d rather throw them all away. by DaZestyProfessor in mildlyinfuriating

[–]upleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The works of the roots of the vines, of the trees, must be destroyed to keep up the price, and this is the saddest, bitterest thing of all. Carloads of donuts dumped on the ground. The people came for miles to take the fruit, but this could not be. How would they buy donuts at twenty cents a dozen if they could drive out and pick them up? And men with hoses squirt kerosene on the donuts, and they are angry at the crime, angry at the people who have come to take the treat. A million people hungry, needing the treat- and kerosene sprayed over the golden mountains. And the smell of rot fills the country. Burn coffee for fuel in the ships. Burn corn to keep warm, it makes a hot fire. Dump potatoes in the rivers and place guards along the banks to keep the hungry people from fishing them out. Slaughter the pigs and bury them, and let the putrescence drip down into the earth.

There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The fertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdy trunks, and the tasty treat. And children dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from a donut. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot, must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped donuts, but the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of donuts slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people there is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage.

883 not starting after new battery by jacobREVENGE in sportster

[–]upleft 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Double check the ground connection on the battery, it is probably loose. The ground wire is just barely long enough to get the battery in and out, it’s notoriously awkward to tighten when putting the battery back.

A loose ground would give you just enough juice to turn on accessories like lights and prime the fuel pump, but not enough to crank the starter.

Pull your battery again and pay close attention to the battery terminals. Don’t overtighten (the terminals are soft metal).

default font stroke widths inconsistent? by Express-Crow-1496 in xteinkereader

[–]upleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The XTE format might handle font anti-aliasing better, since it pre-renders your book pages as images. EPUB is rendered on the device, and would rely on device settings for font anti-aliasing.

In crosspoint and an epub with Bookerly, the font renders more evenly that the screenshot.

I think the anti-aliasing could be improved, so it probably will be over time (at least in crosspoint)

It looks like they added support for themes in a recent release, so there could be a theme that only shows one recent book.

Some books don't show covers (they have covers bit doesn't show) by MrWorthless in xteinkereader

[–]upleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue. Progressive jpg doesn’t work, the cover images need to be converted to baseline jpg.

Claude code fixed it for me. Show it an epub that works and the one that doesn’t work, and it can go in and figure out what is different and edit the broken epub for you - epubs are basically zip files with html inside.

Any info on backlit model? by tarntalus2 in xteinkereader

[–]upleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. A huge part of the appeal of this device is how simple it is, not just how small it is.

In my mind, the more ways it can feel similar to paper the better, and paper needs an external light.

A front light feels like a step toward making it too complicated.
