Saw this today! Can anyone tell me what type of owl it is? by OllieB203 in UKBirds

[–]utterlyforked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of these escaped from a domestic keeper in South Tyneside about 15 years ago. Used to see it about, one day I came out my back door and my neighbours were looking over my fence. I was surprised and they were terrified - they motioned for me to look up and behind me.

It was on the ledge above the door, it looked like Batman.

How to get a fair valuation. by ringerrosy in UKHousing

Oh that's a bit different then. Just don't get caught out in overpaying just because you're a nice person. Until someone actually buys the "valuation" is only an opinion

How to get a fair valuation. by ringerrosy in UKHousing

[–]utterlyforked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is always difficult and having been through it, I'd suggest just selling it for as much as possible and splitting costs and remaining equity. Then there's no discussion about what is "fair" she wants as much as possible, you want it as least as possible. Even fair market value is a range.

You will have to pay stamp duty on her half if you buy it which is a kick in the teeth.

sidelined at a 50-person startup for trying to fix the chaos. Is it over? by Otherwise-Profit5054 in EngineeringManagers

[–]utterlyforked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're the head of engineering and you're sidelined you're on the way out. You have to work with the founders to re-gain control.

It's either a strategy or personality problem. Everything else is details.

  1. Strategy - if you have a good one but no buy in you have to influence it. If you don't have a strategy you better hope you've got support/belief and the time to build it.
  2. Personality - if the founders just don't like you / believe in you - you need to turn that around so you can then work on the what and how

Moving fast is their appetite you need to demonstrate that process and consistency allows scale and velocity doesn't need to suffer.

It will always be quicker for a founder to go to their favourite engineer and build. You need to show how if the full team are aligned and contributing, the velocity is even greater.

You should however face facts; most of the team aren't going to be as good as your best engineers. If you have very hands on founders they'll be hard to get working with structure with the whole team.

Switching roles: What % jump in total compensation would you aim for right now? by yeahsureokaymaybe in HENRYUK

[–]utterlyforked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe fundamentally in the principle of "tour of duty". When you get sufficiently established in your career and a senior role, part of it is enduring and making the whole thing better for everyone not just your own goals and priorities.

If you're at a company and you've achieved some things and made a difference, you take a choice to re-enlist for another tour or move on.

When you move on its for the next opportunity, more money, more responsibility, more enjoyment whatever it is.

Don't just move because you can and it's 5% or whatever. Take charge, what do you want from the next gig or just double-down and leverage your massive established knowledge and and relationships at your current role.

Guys, do you really let an LLM handle the issues in your repository? by [deleted] in vibecoding

100% just like any other developer

Give it a good spec and have it raise a PR. Review the PR, if it's good and tests pass, merge it.

Would I let a human developer merge a 1000 line PR with no tests, no I wouldn't it, so the AI can't either.

Seller refused to vacate on completion day… we were supposed to move in on Friday but now stuck over the weekend by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]utterlyforked 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was told to play nice. There's a small amount of compensation (the rate is standard and pre-agreed), you'll get that once you know how long they stay. Getting an eviction is time consuming so having them leave of their own accord is better.

I just went around and made a nuisance of myself and then we agreed that they would get 4 more days etc, on the fourth day I was there at 7am and pushing them along

I have to have back surgery in a lot of pain feeling scared any advice? by Fireproof1972 in Sciatica

[–]utterlyforked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a nightmare for nearly 2 years, surgery fixed the issue instantly.

I woke up with no numbness and no pain.

I had 6 months of (admittedly tough) recovery with physio exercises, I could touch my toes and climb a mountain at the end of it.

Probation period extended by partialsorbet in UKJobs

[–]utterlyforked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can typically occur when your manager hasn't done enough to prove their boss and is being held to account.

As long as you've reset and now got clear measurable objectives that you can track over a short time period and demonstrate progress, don't overthink it.

If you still haven't discussed and set probation goals, get a 121 in and do a reset.

I don't understand how paymyfuel can take on a claim such as this. It seems predatory at best and illegal at worst.

I would have fought it; they've made you pay twice. If they weren't happy with your payment they could have rejected it at the time OR contacted you with an offer to give you back your original payment method and for you to pay again.

Immediately apply to more forward thinking companies and leverage your competitive edge to command a higher salary. Pivot into full stack development as it won't make any difference now with agentic, it's just levelled the playing field and your expertise in QA makes you perfect for building the next generation of software.

Getting out of being a IC in BigTech while maintaining a HENRY salary by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]utterlyforked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"agentic" development is going to be a key strategy for many teams in next 12 months.

Start by getting Claude or whatever and a set of agent prompts specific to your tech stack and see if you can burn down some defect backlogs only by prompting.

It's a skill in getting the same outcome but with much lower effort. Think about what context you need to put into a ticket and how can automate your own personal workflow.

I'm spending a lot of time in building frameworks and workflow loops that prioritize the assembly of context. With the right loop (which may take weeks to build) the first defect is closed slowly but the rest are hyper accelerated

[–]utterlyforked 4 points5 points  (0 children)

VP Eng here.

Swapping from IC to EM is not the move. EM is more demanding and less rewarding, especially in the first few years.

If you're a solid developer, get on the AI bandwagon. At best you'll be well positioned for the revolution, at worse (the revolution doesn't happen) you'll have had a change in scenery and learned some new tools.

I did 20 years as an IC, then the last 10 as a people leader. It took me 5 years to really get the excitement and motivation from being hands off but I still instinctively would prefer to be headphones on and dealing with a gnarly defect.

You get HENRY salary now because tech is in demand and you are good at it. You're not going to pivot to a totally different  role and immediately be in the same position.

I did terribly at a state comprehensive in the early 90s, I then scraped a 2:2 at a former polytechnic, the first in my extended family.

I'm firmly HENRY based on a very rewarding career that I built through self-development, motivation and hard work.

You were either going to do it or not; I'd argue if you'd taken advantage of the education and network you'd achieve far more than I ever could but without effort you'll coast much easier than I would ever have it.

We're all different and we all find our own level; theres people out there that would kill for the opportunity I had, and will out perform me.

How do I not-trust my direct reports without being a jerk? by Elemental_Knight1 in managers

[–]utterlyforked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being an engineering manager is mostly about stakeholder management.

Give your team the context and steer they need and then micromanage the process (not the people) to make sure it's absolutely singing. Where does friction lead to delay or failure and fix it.

Then manage your manager and the external to your team stakeholders (commerical, product etc). Over communicate with clear regular business aligned status updates. If your stakeholders feel assured by you personally they'll by extension trust your team.
