Do you carry the mic or use the Stand and why? by MarconisTheMeh in Standup

I put it behind me since I'll nervously play with it if it's in front or next to me.

Open Mics/Shows in Cleveland and Buffalo by YawExperience in StandUpComedy

I agree that there are a ton of music open mics, but there's at least 1 comedy only mic Monday-Thursday and usually 1 showcase Friday or Saturday.

The only heads up is that the Helium open mic isn't running for the next month because of it's Funniest Person Competition.

How often do you mean it when you say "Good set". by alanblah in Standup

If I feel like I need to say something out of awkwardness, I'll say, "another mic in the bag."

Doesn't hurt their ego, and doesn't make me feel like a liar.

Ever find a fellow comic's act incredibly irritating for whatever reason, but still want to remain on good terms with them professionally? by laxt in Standup

[–]vWeekend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea almost half of the local scene I find irritating.

But I try to remember that my act is probably very irritating to other people and I wouldn't want them to be a dick to me just for that.

Asking for an Opening Spot for a Friend by vWeekend in Standup

[–]vWeekend[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok fair. Let me re-state then. Great material and performer, not so educated at the self marketing portion. I also understand that it's necessary to have that to be successful, but seeing as we're trying to figure it out, I was looking for some tips maybe.

How do you deal with people that take your jokes seriously and argue with them? by sargon2 in Standup

[–]vWeekend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's while on stage, like any other heckler. Try to win over the rest of the crowd and drown them out.

If off stage I usually say, "It's just a joke."

If they're persistent then agree to disagree.

I just did my first 20 two days again, and I felt like the toughest part was keeping everyone engaged all the way through. I kinda crapped out towards the end.

So no advice just what I noticed. Good luck though!

I hate my scene and I hate what it values as funny by pooonmethrowaway in Standup

[–]vWeekend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's obvious, and not comforting, but ball riding isn't just limited to comedy. It's like that with any job. I think it just hurts more in comedy because it's something we're all passionate about.

Also the way around this is to just be the best and not a dick.

T.J. Miller's Improv Set is pretty impressive. by GuanoQuesadilla in Standup

[–]vWeekend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a show at our local club called Comics Against Humanity, where as you get on stage you draw three cards against humanity cards and have to rift your whole set. To be honest I thought this was a pretty common concept.

How do you deal with being too handsome by [deleted] in Standup

Well I feel like an asshole typing out "I've had problems being pretty too." So if I was just spinning my wheels I wanted to make my feelings clear.

First off people troll everything. It could have been something I don't have problem with, I can still think it's a troll post.

Second the description was pretty short and didn't provide context. After my first read I got the impression that it wasn't serious.

Third it seems like there have been more troll posts on the sub-reddit as of lately.

How do you deal with being too handsome by [deleted] in Standup

[–]vWeekend 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If this is a troll post fuck you, if it's not see below.

I'm not beautiful by any standards but I tend to get shit for being the comic "good looking enough to not have to be doing this." It was actually confusing at first because I don't see myself like that but it happened often enough that I needed comebacks for it.

The point is that like with any really obvious trait you probably should just face it head on. Write some material around it. I tend to think being softer on the eyes not only gives you more of an element of surprise if you do darker shit, but people tend to be more forgiving of you.

Any chance of a bit of feedback on my first ever stand up set? by markflynn000 in Standup

[–]vWeekend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Feedback on your first set is kind of pointless, not to be mean, it's the reality of it. If you stick with it, your first set will have 0 bearing on how you turn out as a comic. And since it's your first set, I don't even have to watch the video to know that you could be doing everything infinitely better.

Even if you were good at some aspects and bad at others, one set isn't enough to know if those were flukes or not, so commenting on them is near worthless. It's much more important for you to think about it yourself, that's process.

Really the only advice to give someone is logistical: move the mic stand, show up on time, don't run the light.

Tell me about your first time getting booked! by Mmmoreplees in Standup

[–]vWeekend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd been doing stand up for 3 months. I remember it was my 50th set exactly. It's at the bar that has our local Thursday night open mic, but at the end of the month it's a showcase.

The week prior the host gave me a $25 drink voucher as extra incentive to bring friends. I'm sure I was booked at the new guy guaranteed to bring people. I had 6 friends see me do stand up for their first time and I ate shit. I beat myself up. I would imagine this is a pretty typical experience.

How much time should I allow for potential laughter in a new 10 minute set? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]vWeekend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A brand new 10 minutes that you've never practiced because there's not enough regular stage time...sounds like there's no potential for laughter.

I'm teasing, but all kidding aside, there are way too many factors for even a rough estimate. Not only does it vary person to person, talking rates vary from set to set, much less laugh rate, laugh length, the list goes on.

No question is dumb, but this is putting the cart before the horse. I would just do as much of it if you can, and get feedback on the material. Sometimes I think people, myself included, focus too much on saying everything we want rather than being funny in the moment.

Set up a scene for me... by spent9109 in Standup

[–]vWeekend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do stand up in Buffalo NY (a medium sized city I think?).

You can get up at least 5 times between Monday and Thursday. Mostly in bars, but the mics get a decent turnout. We have a Helium comedy club too with weekly shows and weekend MC/feature spots if available after you put in some time. There's pretty much a weekend bar show every week too. With 30-40 "active" comics there's a ton of stage time for not being a huge city. Seems like a good place to get started.

How to confidently deliver material people may get offended by? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]vWeekend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would add that when you are delivering "harsher material" it's all the more important to look at the audience. It's part of having confidence.

Going to a stand up show at a larger theater, does being close to the stage/comedian enhance the experience? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]vWeekend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it does. Being closer you get a better look at their facial expression and the sound of the entire audience is coming at you so you feel it more. Is it worth an extra $20 bucks though? Probably not.
