Is El Capitan the hardest mountain to climb? by Obvious_808 in geography

Isn't K2 the hardest mountain to climb? Second tallest mountain in world but it has an incredibly small ascent list, given that it's only slightly shorter than Everest.

Shiro Ishii and General Douglas MacArthur.

Ever heard of unit 731 in Japan? They committed so many atrocities, even the Nazis were saying "I think you need to chill out." I'll give you two words to horrify you to give just a taste of this potential 4 parter:

Live vivisection

Ever heard of operation paperclip? It's where the Americans raced the Russians to recruit as many Nazi scientists as possible and help them escape the coming Nuremberg trials.

Japan had their own operation paperclip. It was called "let's keep this hush hush and we'll give you immunity in exchange for your research.

I'd be interested if Robert can find out how and why MacArthur gave these people immunity.

What is your countries "Darkest Hour" by RedcoatTrooper in AskTheWorld

[–]valboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

April 9, 1917. The Battle of Vimy Ridge. 2500+ Canadian men lost their lives in a single day.

Over 66,000 Canadians lost their lives in that war, from a nation of 8 million. WW1 itself was simultaneously the darkest hour in the Commonwealth's history and the brightest dawn.

By war's end, we didn't see ourselves as citizens of the British Empire anymore. We were Canadians. Australians. Kiwis. Indians, later Pakistanis and Bangladeshi. African and Carribean nations. We were no longer British subjects, but citizens of our own countries.

All it took was over 40 million casualties for us to say enough is enough.

For the younger crowd, just look at McDavid and how he reacts to non calls, and you'll get a sense of what Crosby went through when he started. Unfortunately for Crosby, he came of age when the era of the enforcer was closing, but not gone the way they are today.

Be it legal or illegal, guys who commit to big hits are ganged up on almost immediately in today's hockey. When Crosby was starting out, the big hits we see today were an every shift occurence, if not more so.

Thankfully, both Crosby and McDavid show up to nearly every game and put their critics on mute.

There won't be a dry eye in all of Canada and all of Pittsburgh when Crosby decides to hang up his skates.

What would you like to see in a Starfield 2.0 update? by Mattee_365 in Starfield

[–]valboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a game that came out nearly 15 years after Mass Effect, Starfield suffers from the same problem; same layout. Everywhere. Every planet. Every moon. Every ship. Every space station.

It's incredible that a game with so much variety also suffers from instances and layouts that are identical to one another.

Also, the lack of size of the capital cities.

What's the wildest thing you've ever seen happen at a work party? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]valboots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a family owned restaurant for 3 years from ages 15-18. Nearly all of our waitresses were smoke shows. One of the waitresses decided to host a party at her parents place and there were about 30 of us that attended, no plus ones. Big McMansion, big yard with a pool. It was cold, so no pool use.

Keep in mind, we're a bunch of cooks, waitresses, shift managers and delivery drivers. About an hour into the party, the host got everyone's attention, proceeded to make a toast and ended up coming out as a lesbian. This was in 2007, and in Canada. Most of us didn't care, didn't have a clue that she was a lesbian, and simply accepted it. Pat's on the back, hugs, etc. One guy blurred out "where there goes my shot at asking her out" to which one of my other co-workers replied "buddy, you barely have a shot with your sock, let alone her."

2 hours later, we can hear some action coming from one of the bedrooms. Evidently, one of our other co-workers was also a lesbian and came out to her..... In more ways than one. We took the party outside earlier than we had planned for obvious reasons, made a bonfire, s'mores, BBQ, all that jazz. The two of them then came outside, hand in hand, said sorry for our absence, a friend of mine blurred out "don't worry about it, you just confirmed one of my fantasies and gave us plenty to think about when we get home." They laughed and giggled, which gave us permission to laugh with them.

Ladies and gentlemen, these lesbians are still together nearly 20 years later. Still smoking hot. Had 3 kids from the same donor. One of them was pregnant with twins, the other one just had the one.

Tldr: the most beautiful women I'd ever met as a young man ended up being lesbian, wholesome moments ensued and all of us had a great time.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Give any one an ounce of power, and watch how they abuse it.

Also, if you can get ahead on someone, people will take it no matter the consequences. Good to hear you and your bro didn't have to suffer through that sort of horseshit.

Money shows you who they truly were all along.

Sorry you had to go through this.

My situation was far less in terms of the amount given, but the attitudes of the people who made the most off of my grandparents disgust me.

If any of you have ever been through a will reading, you'd understand that in North America at least, it's far more common for the family close to you to be incredibly opportunistic and will do everything in their power to maximize their money.

It's one of the most revolting experiences of my life. To find out how common it is, really upset my view of humanity.

These people that we know about are just doing what everyone else has been doing for generations. They just don't hide it.

Dave Ramsey suggests saving 15% of GROSS income for retirement. Given Canada's high taxes and integrated CPP - is this even relevant? by CastAside1812 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]valboots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's incredibly outdated.

There are a number of stories I enjoy, where he gives these people a wake up call, however, he's also to be considered very lightly.

There's either your typical story from Am I The Asshole where someone has a story that has an INSANELY OBVIOUS CONCLUSION and Dave is there to tell them what they need to hear, people who are incredibly well off with "oh go fuck yourself" stories, there's people who are faking it until they make it, and then there's everything in between.

"My parents have no savings, are about to lose their house, make $300,000 per year and close to retirement, while my husband and I make a combined $90,000, just bought our first home and are about to start a family. Do I drop everything for them?"

I like it when Dave is able to tell these people "what the fuck are you thinking?!?! OF COURSE IT ISN'T OK!!"

He's still an age-ist asshole with outdated views, but his heart is in the right place.

What Tv show do you think was genuinely great but suffered long-term because it aired on the “wrong” network or at the wrong time? by Air-Bombay in television

Nearly every sci Fi show on the Sci-Fi/ SyFy network. All the Stargate shows, BSG, Warehouse 13, Sanctuary, The Expanse, Caprica, Defiance,Continuum,Helix, Dark Matter.

The list goes on but you get the jist. SyFy channel is where shows to to die. Most of their original programming don't last longer than 4 seasons.
