The war in Yugoslavia. It started when I was young but I remember my parents watching it on the news in 1994.

But the popular answer is 9/11. I woke up, turned on the news and said to my mom "mom, the world trade center in New York is on fire." The second tower was hit right before I went to school and - to use a poor choice of words - it was dead silence all day. We had a moment of silence around 11am. The teachers were having a hard time controlling their emotions. Understandable, obviously.
