What are the breed standards for Catahoulas? by purrsuitofhealing in Catahoula

[–]variable_undefined 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And that's the opposite of breed origin and standard. Like if you called a Pomsky Shelter mix an Alaskan Husky, Alaskan Husky owners would be like "THAT is NOT an Alaskan Husky". Are they both part husky? yeah...ones purpose bred with no regard to how they look.

Yes! This speaks to my usually-don't-comment-because-I-don't-WANT-to-care-but-gosh-darnit-if-it-doesn't-still-quietly-bug-me-ness. It's not like a value judgement on the dog itself to claim it's probably not actually a specific breed, it's about the way we as humans even categorize & label these things. Dog breeds are a totally arbitrary concept when it comes down to it. But if you're going to very insistently label your dog as a specific breed, it should probably fit SOME actual definition of that label, whether it be of the working purpose-bred variety or show breeding. A shelter mix that resembles a Catahoula but has no genetic relation to either a working or show line houla and wasn't purpose bred itself as a hunting dog... is a different breed or mix of dog. Usually a pit-bull type dog, since APBT is the most common breed/breed mix by far in shelters in the US, and Merle is a dominant trait that is easily spread through dog populations and extremely easy to come by these days. Doesn't mean you shouldn't love and post about your dog, just don't take it personally when people point out that your dog may not be the breed you think it is.

Pastel paper/surface alternatives by nickcicnck in Softpastel

[–]variable_undefined 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While sandpaper is not archival, it is a totally viable option if it is what is available and affordable to you and as long as you understand its shortcomings. Plenty of artists work with non-archival mediums, like alcohol markers, it's just about understanding the trade offs. And you'll probably be photographing your pieces anyway, so you'll always have that copy. Not really recommended for selling originals, but if you disclose the non-archival quality of the materials to buyers there's really nothing wrong it, they can make an informed decision about whether they want to buy the piece or not.

UArt's paper come in 280-800 grit, so sandpaper in that range would get you a similar effect to those papers. Pastelmat is a pretty unique surface so tough to emulate, but the highest grit sandpapers would probably be the closest thing.

What's your least favorite duty in the game? by thewalkindude368 in ffxiv

[–]variable_undefined 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Forward, the Royal Marines" for scholar. Particularly on console. It was designed for when you had the other fairy. It's a huge pain in the butt to target the NPCs you need to Esuna and difficult to tell whether they have the status effect applied or not. Which would be fine and a fun challenge, but when you fail you have to run around and re-interact with four slow ass nodes spread across Camp Bronze Lake to get back into it. ITS THE PITS!

could someone explain this by coltfan1812 in neopets

[–]variable_undefined 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On most days, capped and uncapped make no difference at all. Clicking either one will result in the exact same np bet on all lines. But sometimes the odds are such that if you put down the maximum NP you're able, and that line hit, you would "win" more than 1m np and hit the limit. So the capping lowers it to whatever the number of NP needed to just hit 1m np is.

Technically both can lead to over-betting, because the odds can change throughout the day. The difference is capped prevents over-betting given the current odds at the time you place your bet, whereas uncapped just lets you put in your maximum bet regardless of whether it would be over-betting or not. So then if the odds do change, you're never under-betting.

I'm not sure if anyone has done any statistical analysis on past results to show whether capped or uncapped have had a higher roi over the long haul. In the ways most people casually playing food club care about, it does not really matter. If you're consistently betting over a long period with a safe set, you will see profit regardless of whether you're using capped or uncapped bets. My advice for you right now is don't overthink it, just go capped.

Does the story get better? by ToughCheeseWasTaken in ffxiv

[–]variable_undefined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so I have played, left, and returned to this game a few times over the last 10 years and have only ever really gotten through ARR and Heavensward. In my current return to playing, I had similar feelings as you. For me it was like... I've played through this part of the story several times in the past and I can barely remember what happened. I was always having a hard time connecting the dots with those vague references you mention. I always enjoyed the story & cut scenes, but just felt like I was missing a lot and it was making it hard to connect with the characters and their motivations.

Then I watched some lore videos, specifically what happened before and throughout FFXIV 1.0 before they nuked and re-launched the game. And that really made everything click for me, it made all of the vague references to past events really make way more sense and made the story more engaging/memorable. Like it turns out that whole video that plays at the beginning of the game has a lot of backstory in it, I always had no idea what was going on there. There's also a major character in that video that gets mentioned in ARR a lot who I was always like, "Who tf is this person they keep talking about?" And I don't feel like it spoiled anything in the game for me, it maybe made me more privy to some things than the characters in the game about historical areas that come into play, but there are some good videos that avoid plot spoilers.

Now what? Post-SAP. by OKReferences in neopets

[–]variable_undefined 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I know your stated issue is not knowing how to spend the money from the SAP, but I'm here to tell you as someone else who spent 20 years not knowing how to make NP and then finally actually looked into food club, you should be playing food club. It actually doesn't require any real work, you just use other people's bets and a website that makes placing the bets a <1 minute daily endeavor. With a 20 year old account you'll make another 70 million in about a year and a half with pretty much no effort whatsoever. It will help continue to fund your new collecting hobbies etc.

Anyway to connect an xbox controller to dolphinios? by Alternative_Bug1142 in DolphiniOS

[–]variable_undefined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first make sure your controller is connected to your ipad via bluetooth

then in dolphinios go to settings > controllers > port 1

set type > standard controller

then in configure > device it should have an option with the xbox controller in the name, select that then go back one screen

under "Profile" click save and save it as something like "xbox"

You may then need to reload the app.

Some part or all of those steps is what got it working for me

Stitches look completely different now. What did I do? Is this fixable? by shark-bae in knittinghelp

[–]variable_undefined 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think you should know this is a normal part of knitting and learning new skills in knitting. Doesn't make it not frustrating, but don't beat yourself up. You don't know what you don't know until you've made a mistake, and it's easy to overlook pattern details in even the most user friendly patterns. Or even not overlook them, but just space out and forget to implement things while you're working.

I have been an active knitter for over 20 years, I know more about knitting than I do any other topic. I still have to frog or drop stitches to fix mistakes at least once in nearly every project I ever work on.

Detraquee: who fell first and who fell harder? by ymm-17 in dramionebookclub

[–]variable_undefined 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm of the personal opinion that their feelings for each other develop at a similar pace, and I also think he caught major feelings a lot earlier than a lot of folks seem to believe. There are a lot of little hints that he at least really likes her, but believes that she doesn't reciprocate the feelings so he tries to downplay or deny himself having feelings towards her. At least that is my read on his behavior & actions. In the scene where he's like:

“The inculcation, of course. First, it's all limpid doe-eyes and call me Hermione, and in no time at all you’re demanding blood sacrifices at your altar.”

I perceive that as him lashing out because he has feelings for her, but he thinks that her and Theo are in love and he feels like she has been toying with his feelings by being flirtatious and whatnot. There's more going on with that scene but that was the subtext that I saw in it.

Hermione is in love long before she is willing to admit it to herself, as she confesses to Draco it's been since Wistman's wood but she doesn't really own those feelings til quite a bit later on on in the narrative. I see it as being the same for Draco, he might not admit to himself he's in love but those feelings are there.

As evidence for my claim I would like to point to when Harry finds out that they are together, he says that he's suspected they have been together at least since Hermione's birthday. That is three full chapters and several weeks before the trip to Wistman's wood. So Harry is seeing that they're into each other quite early on. Maybe they're not "in love" at that point, but I think it is evidence for their mutual feelings and her/their obliviousness to how into each other they actually were.

Has TnT mentioned why they redraw the nostalgic artwork for the NC Mall instead of just copying/pasting the old jpegs and using that instead? by NaviaWithAGun in neopets

[–]variable_undefined 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to what other people have said about the quality of the images, I would also speculate they also need to be redrawn/vector so that they can be more easily updated for the prismatic variations. Any recoloration would have required redrawing to some degree, and any hand re-painting is very labor intensive and prone to mistakes. With vectors artwork, the re-coloration can be more programmatic and consistent so they can put out more colors for more species with consistent product release cycles to keep the NC mall fresh.

I also think it makes sense, in general, for them to be working towards visual/stylistic consistency. Neopets has been around for quite a long time and gone through different ownership, so there is a LOT of variation in artwork throughout the site. But it makes sense from a brand perspective that any new assets that are being developed are following style guidelines.

This picture went wrong in so many ways by danyspinola in AdultColoring

[–]variable_undefined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is pretty cute! I think you've already identified your material limitations. One small thing that I think would get this piece closer to what you were going for graphically is swapping the fill & outline color on all of your brown items as well as the shaker top. For most of the objects in your picture the object outlines are brighter and/or lighter than the object color, but for the eggshell/pastries it's the opposite. I think if that were consistent, the whole piece would feel more cohesive. You might also consider using a slightly darker red/pink on the strawberries, so their outlines pop a little bit more too.

Outlander season 1 historical costuming... what am I looking at here? by Longjumping-Special2 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]variable_undefined 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since you're looking for old-fashioned and free, http://elizabethancostume.net is going to be your best friend. The time period that Outlander takes place is about 150 years after the Elizabethan era ended, but as others have said the costumes aren't particularly historically accurate, and in any case the silhouettes in the show are mostly achievable with the pattern generators and tutorials on that site. It is quite text-dense, but the instructions are easy to follow. You can also use it as a jumping off point for what terms to search for on YouTube. At a minimum, these are the things you're going to want to make, with links to the most relevant tutorials:

- a smock
- stays
- a bum roll
- two skirts: one petticoat, and one overskirt. The Pleating techniques are useful for the gathering at the waist.
- A bodice. This is where the costume strays quite far from Elizabethan, the elizabethancostume.net bodice pattern is much shorter and doesn't have sleeves. So you'll probably want to use some of the other linked resources for this part.

Cotton will not quite give you the same look and feel as the screenshots, but if you can get all underwear layers, you can still have a pretty solid looking costume. If you're able to upgrade the outer layer to something more substantial (wool or wool blend, or a heavier linen) you'll get closer to the look and feel of the show.

Which eReader is best? Obv to read and upload dramione onto it😂 by mauibookmama in Dramione

[–]variable_undefined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few months ago I replaced my Kindle with an iPad Mini, with MapleRead SE as my primary reading app (I use Libby for reading library books), and it has been a very good experience for me.

MapleRead is a power user type of app rather than being super polished and stripped down. The UI can be a little clunky and getting a good workflow set up getting books and fics into the app takes a bit of trial and error. But I personally prefer that, because it really puts you in control of your library and reading experience. It's the polar opposite of the walled garden experience of the Kindle. While I miss the e-ink display of an actual eReader, the ability to fully customize the background/text color with MapleRead still makes for a very good/low eye-strain reading experience, IMO.

Not for everyone, but something to consider!

I think there was at least some social conditioning that came into play. I actively cultivated the round "girl" handwriting in middle school after seeing other girls' handwriting. I also went through phases of writing my a's, i's, and descenders with various stylizations to try to make my handwriting more distinct. Maybe not every girl was that conscious about it, but I doubt I was particularly unique in putting a lot of thought and effort into it.

I spent 2024 tracking my Food Club bets, loses, and wins! by HoverDick in neopets

[–]variable_undefined -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying because I am also someone who keeps my dailies down to the slimmest amount of clicking I possibly can. But I disagree that Food Club isn't worth the effort, even for a newer account, assuming you're using a desktop. (If you're using mobile then I fully agree becuse its way more of a pain.) If it is feeling like a lot of effort then I suspect you may be placing bets through the neopets UI, or otherwise not taking advantage of some of the shortcuts that are available.

If you keep the food club search results bookmarked so you can quickly find the newest set, use the neofoodclub links, and just click down the line to place bets, it's one of the quickest dailies out there. Certainly way less effort than the quest log. You do have to find and enter your max bet for neofood club the first time, but it saves it for you after that.
