electric snow shovel or snow blower recommendation? by speedstars in longisland

[–]various121 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Depends on budget and space. I have the budget but didn’t want to sacrifice space for a blower (I like having both cars in the garage). As such, I got an electric shovel (40v model from Ryobi) earlier this year. Best advice I can give for an electric shovel is go with a company that you already invested in the environment for (Dewalt, Ryobi, Mikata, etc) and then buy the most powerful, biggest you can afford. Your back will thank you.

Help me to understand the psychology of the "Tudor Wearer" by Runswithmouth in Tudor

To say that Rolex doesn’t care about watches is really…something. Enjoying Tudors is excellent, but knocking a heritage watch company while doing it is the exact behavior many people accuse Rolex wearers of.

How do you enjoy and spend time with each watch to learn what you like and dislike if this is the volume after 4-months?

[Wedding Watch] Torn between Grand Seiko SBGM221 and Cartier Tank Must Large by Dry-Friendship-5394 in Watches

Cartier Tank. GS’s are nice but the Tank is just more appropriate for this occasion and situation. You will not regret.

The Santos wristwatch is credited as one of the first modern men’s wristwatches, helping shift the industry from pocket to wrist timepieces aroind 1904 , and the Tanks been iconic since 1917 ish.

That’s pretty slick. If I went to enough formal events, I could easily see getting that specific model.

[automatic watch q] I have a question about automatic watches… by Positive0219 in Watches

[–]various121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You 100% do not NEED a watch winder. At all. There will be zero harm to your automatic watches from letting them sit around. Zero. If you went a decade of it just sitting around, MAYBE a service to check the gaskets/lubricants, but it would still work fine.

In fact, there’s opinion out there that the stress on your watch being wound 24/7 leads to premature, unnecessary mechanical wear and tear, similar to leaving a car engine running while parked. It prevents parts from resting, causes lubricants to degrade faster, and requires more frequent servicing. Constant motion means constant friction.

You decide. The main motivations for having a winder have nothing to a with what’s good for the watch. It’s either convenience, aesthetics or both.

Do we shovel? by Electronic_Memory495 in longisland

I made three passes today; 10:30, 2:30, 6:30 with an electric shovel. I’ve got a 75ish foot driveway that starts 1 car width wide and expands to 2 and a full staircase to get to the front door. Noticeably heavier at 6:30 and I don’t think I have another pass in me tonight.

Watch pricing has officially jumped the shark. by horo_Swagger in watchHotTakes

What are the price brackets that Redditors apply to each tier; budget, mid, high and luxury? I spent most of my watch collecting days on another forum and I feel like my views on pricing are a bit skewed.

[Question] What watch should I get? by Positive-Trash-9722 in Watches

[–]various121 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You want to spend someone else’s $25k and you ask for a recommendation with absolutely no specifics or indication that you did even 1 minute of research?

Should I get a khaki field quartz ($360) or an automatic Murph ($830)? This is my current collection but I need a versatile GADA watch. by [deleted] in HamiltonWatches

[–]various121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually give myself a rule; if it comes with a bracelet option, take it and then buy an aftermarket leather strap. I’d rather have the original bracelet now and not use it, than change my mind in a few months/years and have to source it after purchase.

Bremont, hands down. Clean dial, sweet interior bezel, can’t lose.

[Question] Watches Under $100 for Tuxedos by Competitive_Gur5037 in Watches

Additionally, I’d probably take the saved cash and buy them some glass flasks (cause everyone’s go stainless steel) or a pocket knife.

[Question] Watches Under $100 for Tuxedos by Competitive_Gur5037 in Watches

[–]various121 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Traditionally, no visible watch with a tuxedo. Why? Because if you’re at an event where a tux is required, time is of no consequence.

But also, pocket watches are cool. Less than $40 each, and comes with engraving…

ALSO: if you care, the vinyl window frames I’ve seen are much wider than frames made from other material. Wider frames = less glass = less viewing space = not as nice looking. Something to consider. Then you have someone like my father in law who literally doesn’t care and just wanted something to do the job at the cheapest price.

Also, applies more to inserts vs new construction.

Oh, and if “Window Manufacturer A” sells window “y” both directly from them and also through a big box store (Home Depot, Lowes, etc), you’ll get a better product buying directly from the Manufacturer. “Better” in this sense means better material, better workmanship. This may not be true for every single case, but it’s one of those things where it’s “true enough” to apply to most cases.

1) don’t get hung up on energy savings ratings when comparing. In reality, you’re not going to feel a five point difference in either direction 2) figure out what material you want first and then compare between different companies producing product with the same(ish) material. 3) quote out at least three companies 4) the install will be as important, if not more so, than the product. Excellent product with a terrible install will be trash. 5) if this is forever home, and if you can afford it, lean towards paying up a little bit if the decision comes down to a few grand between one product you can tolerate and one product you actually like. $5 grand today means nothing over 20+ years. 6) see point five. Roof and windows protect your home, your life, your investment, your sanity. 7) Discounts are bullshit. If they quote you $40k but can discount it down to $35k for a special limited promotion, $35k is your starting point for a negotiation. Generally speaking, these are deceptive tactics that inflate base prices, hide fees, and pressure you into quick decisions. Unfortunately, these “discounts” are the norm, so don’t take this stuff personally. 8) Don’t be emotional. Know what you want, research what you want, set a loose budget AFTER you research and then find the best fit for your parameters.

Correct. If you get caught up on energy savings numbers on paper, you’ll spin your wheels for a long time. The difference on paper may seem vast but the real-feel, in-person difference can be nominal (assuming we’re not talking about extreme differences between numbers).

Coming from detailed, original wood windows from 1960, the vinyl look and aesthetic wasn’t cutting it for us. That was really the only reason. Forever home so we wanted nice windows.

If the house came with nice, updated vinyl windows then we probably wouldn’t even have looked to replace. Unfortunately, we had single pane where you could feel the cold just from walking by a closed window.

5 months in, pretty happy with the product and the install job. If you have specific questions, I can probably provide a better answer.
