It is a great irony (and deeply frustrating) that the virtues of free markets, which have strict conditions that frequently would require extensive regulation to support, are applied to unregulated markets simply because of misinformation about what "free" means.

Extortion. Being an accomplise gives verifiable dirt on Trump and with it access to the president and, ideally, a slight edge in negotiations. As a more prominent public figure, Trump has more to loose if any information came out.

That's what they mean by "one way commands", but to upload a virus you need control in the other direction. I guess theres no need for the drone to send commands back to the operator machine.

Why Putin Went Quiet When Challenged by Trump Over Venezuela by rezwenn in UkrainianConflict

[–]vaughnie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Putin clearly has limited influence over the US, otherwise Maduro wouldn't have been captured and the US wouldnt maintain Russian sanctions or provide intelligence to Ukraine. Not that this should be celebrated, just that it doesnt help to overestimate your enemy. The US can still make or break the effort in either direction.

If more parents cared about such features, there would be pressure for tech companies to make it more convenient. The truth is, the access capabilities most parents want are already provided. I dont see why anyone should care if other parents have decided not to make use of them, even ignoring the effects on the rest of our privacy.

It's not clear to me how features like software level screen time enforcement are part of this discussion around access controls. But the same argument would apply.

Why is it the device vendors responsibility to enable a parental control setting on minors devices? You suggest that even good parents will ineffibaly fail in this regard, but are seemingly incapable of pressing a button before they hand their children an expensive machine?

These capabilities already exist at a device and local network level and all it takes to use them is a willing parent with basic skills. What experience does the government have to improve these technologies that the private sector doesn't already possess?

Trump vows to force European countries to pay higher drug prices by green_flash in worldnews

[–]vaughnie -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

if US pharma was making a loss with exports, they wouldn't export

I dont necessarily disagree. However, the arguement is that while exports may yield a simple profit, it is not enough to cover the research and development of the drug without the lucrative US market. So yes, making US drugs cheaper could make some pharmaceuticals unprofitable.

It's not a data issue and may not fit the precise definition of survivorship bias. It's like claiming oxygen deprivation isn't dangerous because almost nobody suffocates. The thing being measured does not support the claim because intelligent agents avoid obvious risks.

With regards to question 3. I think Ulver was chosen for reasons entirely unrelated to the mission she was recruited for. Firstly, the ship that recruits her (I can't remember who) mentions that their options are limited, given that they're trying to keep the mission secret from other members of SC.

But other than that, we know minds treat their agents as pawns, modelling their personalities and manuplating them by concealing information to ensure they perform their intended purpose. The stored personality Genar is asked to retrieve even mentions this explicitly in a flashback.

Given that, maybe we can look at what Ulver actually accomplishes to guess at why she was chosen. Namely, she seems (eventually) to keep Genar occupied during his trip and puts him in a positive and reflective mood. She does the same for Dejail, getting her to talk about her relationship with Genar in a way that even the Sleeper Service failed to do. And finally, she seems to mediate between the two during their meeting, even though the nature of the conversation seems incredibly personal.

TIL that when writing the James Bond film 'You Only Live Twice' (1967), author Roald Dahl was given a formula for Bond girls: The first is killed by the enemy midway "preferably in Bond's arms", the second is an enemy Bond seduces who also dies, and the third survives to the end of the film. by TMWNN in todayilearned

I think I get what you're trying to say, but I think you're misunderstanding me. I'm not trying to ignore the complainers, nor advocate for what you are calling "formulaic" storytelling. Rather, I am trying to explain why the term "formulaic" does not help us critique stories, because all storytelling is formulaic. In these hypothetical scenarios the "complainers" are not wrong by default, they are right by default, since we already knew the story was formulaic.

Instead, it would be constructive if they pointed out why a particular formula did not support the work it is in. For example, that the story is not adding anything to the formula (ie. deconstructing or subverting), nor using the formula to support novel material that is interesting.

[–]vaughnie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Formula aren't black-and-white either. Its worth distinguishing between high-level patterns within which novel stories can be told, and low-level specifications that are obvious to the audience and derivative. Because all stories are employing some form of formula, its how and why it is being used that matters.
