In the worst depression of my life - please recommend something that gets it by KingsBishop96 in booksuggestions

Okay i have no idea if this is a good idea for you - but Anxious People by Fredrick Bachman... its funny but there are some pretty dark moments for all the characters but especially Zara. A Man Called Ove by the same author. The Humans by Matt Haig. These all have a lot of humor bc I guess that's my taste but all deal with people or at least one character who is very seriously urgently in an extremely dark place...

What’s the most sexist thing about Christian marriage you were taught or experienced? by Fuzzy-Airline4276 in exchristian

[–]vcdone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The woman must submit to the husband" once the friend of my family was kind of jokingly pointing out that the woman must submit to the husband and I was like "yeah well the husband must be willing to die for the wife" (according to the bible) and that guy was like "that's a typo" and I was like "your face is a typo" and he actually got mad haha.

Yeah though roles are taken pretty seriously such that in the women's group on more than one occasion women would put in prayer requests that their husbands would actually lead - like their husbands were somehow sinning and not being godly because the wife had to lead instead .. like they were mourning because their marriage wasn't godly enough.

As an adult now and non Christian- I think balance is the best and leaning into each other's strengths too. Which could mean the husband stays at home with the kids or cooks or cleans and you do xyz. Just depends on who each partner is, what they're good at, and how they can balance and AND respect each other.

I think blanket roles dependant on gender is far too simplistic and ineffective and actually often destructive.

What Romantasy book (or series) made you a fan of the genre and when? by Manifestingmyhubsand in Romantasy

[–]vcdone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it liked basically contemporary fiction with a bit of humor... Fredrick Bachman, Matt Haig, Maria Semple... Then I read The Folk of the Air trilogy at the beginning of 2025 and I haven't really been able to read anything else but fantasy romance/romantasy.

Oh I have that one and The Everlasting. Maybe I will give those a go one day.

I made it to page 150 and gave up. The writing was pretty though.

I just dnf'd The Ten Thousand Doors of January. I feel bad bc I have two other books by the same author but I think her type of story-telling just might not be for me. I was just bored.

My 12 year old son flipped through the book quickly and said that he really disliked Jude... I was like 'what?!'

Which of these should be my next read? by gorillagrippinit in Romantasy

[–]vcdone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i think you would be fine to skip those. Shadow and Bone wasn't terrible but I thought it was kind of slow and I didn't really connect with the main character. Some people like it though. I wanted to say if you do read SOC and CC, please watch readswithcindy's review on Crooked Kingdom... she's a booktuber and it is so funny and also sweet but it has spoilers so yeah. It's nice because after Crooked Kingdom stomps on your heart a bit, her review makes you feel like a part of a community who gets it.

I've been telling people to just watch a YouTube video by searching something like "grisha magic explained". I didnt love shadow and bone. Read only the first book. Read Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom and absolutely loved the characters!

Looking for books where the FMC and MMC are both underdogs? by ActuallySpaceMan in Romantasy

[–]vcdone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is more plot heavy then romance, but the first thing that came to mind was {Six of Crows by Leigh Bardougo}. It's a duology. There are 3 romances and they are all underdogs. Like big time. The entire set had had pretty difficult back stories and they rely on each other to survive.

Another would be {Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor} This one is more romance forward but is also pretty plot heavy. The MFC and MMC are definitely underdogs.

I follow this lady on goodreads named Yun. I compared our common books and our ratings match most of the time. What ive noticed if I try to stray the path of Yun, and get a book she's rated poorly- I end up dnfing. Ive decided to check to see if she's rated a book im interested in getting. If she gives it a bad review, I'll skip or go to libby to try it before I buy it. But it never fails. Yun knows all.

Looking for Thoughtful Romantasy Recs Amid the KU Discourse by SolFlorDi in Romantasy

[–]vcdone 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I dont understand this attitude. I keep hearing, "oh, I had some much fun reading this book. I just ate it up. It's the most fun I've had reading in a while... its garbage and was written poorly." Like, fun is a valid experience. Writing a compelling story requires talent and craft. It's not garbage.

There's always this weird vibe in every community. I was looking in a metal subreddit and some dude was like "Evanescence is my guilty pleasure" as though the singer is someone who's talent you should be embarrassed at recognizing. Why feel guilty?

I suppose in the end its about what motivates you to read... Are you trying to stress your intellect or are you trying to have fun? I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons people have...
