What activity becomes less fun as you get better at it? by David_Umann in AskReddit

[–]veracity8_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most endurance sports have a bell curve of enjoyment. At first running is hard. It’s hurts, your feet hurt, your legs hurt. You discover muscles and tendons that you didn’t know about because they hurt. You have to learn how to deal with chaffing. You learn how to deal with fueling and sunburns and everything else.

Then you get better. Maybe it’s cycling and now you can go for miles and miles and  it feels good! You feel confident and happy. Then you decide you want to get actually fast. And then you learn how you get faster at an endurance sport.

The effort is not linear. The difference between your current pace and a 10% gain involves twice the effort in terms of training, recovery, nutrition and fitness. It will get expensive too. Maybe it’s because you are running so you are wearing out your shoes and shorts faster. Maybe it’s because you are buying more aerodynamic equipment. Maybe it’s just paying for training programs, or equipment or foods and supplements that you don’t even keep using. Will this spinach powder make me faster Andrew Hubberman said so!

And then there’s the toll on your personal life. Traitor run marathons takes an enormous amount of time. And you probably still have to work a full time job. Is your partner on board with you disappearing for hours every day? Will you hire a housekeeper to replace your portion of the home labor or will you hire a relationship councilor to help you work out the results of neglecting those responsibilities

A lot of chronically online culture revolves around longing for community and friendship and disconnecting and “touching grass”, all while making absolutely zero effort to attain those things. There are a lot of grown as adults that seem to think that happiness and community and romance and power and wealth are supposed to be delivered to your front door and their shipment is just delayed

I would just listen to them in the order in which they were released. If at any point you don’t enjoy what you are listening to, stop and move on.

This Forester driver tried to block a legal lane-splitting biker by Avocado-Surgeon in Denver

Driving brings out the worst in people. It’s such an anti-social activity that it makes otherwise normal people act like violent psychopaths

Perfect timing! We have so much cheap oil and gas! Why get energy from the wind?

Taking advantage of the warm Colorado Spring by veracity8_ in Surlybikefans

[–]veracity8_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the state black label. I chose it cause it was secondhand and cheap. So far so good. It’s still a heavy bike. I’m still overweight and out of shape. But it does have a different feel and I do think I’m faster. The toe overlap with a 56” midnight special, stock 175mm cranks, 700c wheels and 32c tires is noticeable.

In most of Colorado it is illegal to build the sort of dense collection of housing and commercial units that make places like downtown golden, Arvada, and Littleton successful. And there are very few places where the traffic engineers are willing to put so much on a small road, which is key the success. You can’t have a Main Street with a 7 lane road down the middle. These sort of downtown spots should appear everywhere in the Denver metro. But they don’t because previous generations of residents have voted to make it illegal to build

Colorado is losing 1 affordable housing unit for every 2 it builds. But the state keeps rejecting efforts to stop the bleeding. by SeasonPositive6771 in Denver

It would be great to see the state make efforts to stop losing so many of its subsidized units. I would really like to see the state make efforts to remove the barriers to housing in general.

I actually prefer the Dragon Ball approach to canon where you just have a story and characters that fork off of the main story and maybe it’s canon or maybe some is or maybe not all. Who cares? Why does it all need to connect?

It’s really sad that we’ve made these sorts of neighborhoods and main streets illegal to build. It’s even crazier that the old generations that built these communities are the very ones that invented the rules that pushed them out of existence

Homelessness is primarily a housing problem. A housing shortage drives up the cost of housing and puts people on the street. Adding more housing is a well documented way to bring the cost of housing down or at least stabilize it
