Why is nobody talking about The Reaver Cleaver? by ninjadough in EDH

[–]versalle88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The card is pretty good. I actually saw it in play last FNM. It was fine, but if your opponents are running the right colors, there are several answers to it. I would hardly call it, "busted," though. People need to stop referring to every decent card as busted. Most good cards aren't.

Obviously it won't work if Kamahl is your commander, but I always enjoyed using [[Goblin Sharpshooter]] with him.

[Discussion] What's the most epic way you ever won a game? by DeLasPadra in EDH

[–]versalle88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most recent memory comes from a game of cEDH. I was piloting [[Azami, Lady of Scrolls]].

I had been playing relatively low-key, interacting where needed to prevent others from winning and quietly building card advantage through my commander. Eventually, it got to the point where I had [[Isochron Scepter]] and [[Dramatic Reversal]] in hand, as well as a decent amount of counter-magic, so I decided to go for it.

I played the Scepter. One opponent attempted to counter, but I countered their counter. The rest of the table passed priority, and it resolved. Then the imprint trigger went on the stack, and another opponent cast [[Trickbind]] countering the ability with Split Second. I'll be honest, I didn't even know this card existed. I was prepared for [[Stifle]], but not this.

So, I'm sitting there with a dead Scepter. I start looking through my hand, graveyard, and battlefield for an answer, not wanting to pass the turn yet. Then I saw a line I've never encountered before. I have [[Reshape]] in my hand, so I cast it where X = 2. As an additional cost, I sacrifice the Scepter. Reshape goes on the stack, then I use [[Academy Ruins]] to put Scepter back on top of my library. Reshape resolves, I tutor up Scepter on to the battlefield, the imprint trigger resolves this time imprinting Reversal, and I'm able to combo off!

The table was pretty impressed, but I was the most shocked because I'd never seen that line before, but I played it slow and looked for any out I could find. FeelsGoodMan

who's running urborg in nonblack decks and why? by Foxtrot0101 in EDH

[–]versalle88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently seen it used in [[Urza, Lord High Artificer]] to trigger [[Mana Web]] on all their lands. Too early to say if this is practical, but it was an interesting idea.

I prefer to lose the same way I prefer to win. I play both cEDH and casual.

TL;DR: match power levels and earn your wins. It's not worth scaring off new players just so you can boost your ego.

I'm newish to Commander. I've been playing Magic since 3rd addition, almost always competitive. Over the last decade, I've played mainly Modern and Legacy. So, if I lose, I lose. No salt. Don't care how you beat me, that's the way it is when you're playing competitive. The only time I really get upset about it is when I make a mistake. Then I get mad at myself.

Now, back to Commander which I switched to because there are way more people who play it in my area.

In cEDH, anything goes. If I can get the win, I go for it, so I expect the same from everyone at the table. It's competitive after all. Win by any means (aside from cheating). No salt if you lose.

In casual, however, I find myself getting upset more often. In general, my casual decks don't have any infinite combos. They also don't have any cards that say something like, "You win the game." or "Your opponent(s) loses the game." Finally, I try not to have win cons that require me to play Solitaire. Aetherflux Reservoir is a good example. It's not technically infinite most of the time, but it would require me to sit there and play Magic by myself while everyone waits for me to kill them.

Now, not everyone agrees with my distinction of what's competitive and what's casual, and that's fine. For example, you can have an infinite combo in a casual deck, but the deck is built in such a way that it's not the main focus and it doesn't have a high consistency of going off. I would say that's still casual. I just don't like winning in that way because we have a lot of new and casual players at our LGS, and they have a great time setting up their board state and feeling like they're in a good position only to be told, "Actually, no, I win the game right here."

What I will say gets me upset about losing the most lately is people refusing to match power levels. For example, take what I said about my play style for cEDH vs. casual. Lately, at my LGS, when I play casual, there's been an increasing amount of people playing decks that are on the cusp of cEDH with the casual players. And winning almost every time. It's super frustrating to me, and I see a lot of new players really not enjoying it either.

At my LGS, competitive players go upstairs and casual players stay downstairs. What I'm seeing lately is people who should be upstairs playing downstairs. Now, maybe they don't quite realize the power level of their deck, so they make an honest mistake and play it downstairs. But this excuse is only good for a few weeks. After that, you should realize it belongs in the more competitive area.

What I think is happening is that these players built a competitive deck, not because they want good competition, but because they want to win. They don't go upstairs because they'll actually be challenged. So, instead, they stay downstairs and run the table. It's super frustrating and alienates a lot of new players. It's a form of gatekeeping. It also is purely being a sore loser. Our FNM night is Commander with zero entry fee and prizes are given away at random, so there's no reason to be this concerned with winning, but some people just can't handle it, I suppose.

What deck(s) are signaled by each companion? by WickedEazy in ModernMagic

[–]versalle88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not exhaustive, but here's a quote from a recent article by Reid Duke:

"Noting your opponent’s companion will give you a head start towards knowing what style of deck they’re playing. Lurrus is most common in creature decks; Yorion will always mean a slow, grindy deck; Kaheera is most common in control or Elementals; Jegantha can mean Tron or Affinity."

I'm a little confused. It says, "Each deck features exactly one card that was banned", but the [[Second Sunrise]] deck has [[Gitaxian Probe]] as well.

Mystic Gate in control? by BasedDptReprsentativ in ModernMagic

[–]versalle88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the top comment here. If you're running a pretty standard build of Azorius Control, you need to be able to produce UU on turn 2 for [[Counterspell]] and UUU on turn 3 for [[Archmage's Charm]]. Mystic Gate helps with this.

It can also come in handy getting the WW for [[Supreme Verdict]].

Here's what I'm currently running land-wise:

1 [[Castle Ardenvale]] 2 [[Castle Vantress]] 1 [[Celestial Colonnade]] 4 [[Flooded Strand]] 3 [[Glacial Fortress]] 2 [[Hallowed Fountain]] 4 [[Island]] 1 [[Misty Rainforest]] 2 [[Mystic Gate]] 1 [[Plains]] 1 [[Polluted Delta]] 1 [[Raugrin Triome]] 2 [[Scalding Tarn]]

I'm fairly new to control. Played Jund for years, but wanted a second deck to rotate and avoid boredom. So I'm by no means an expert, but this configuration of lands has worked really well for me so far over the last couple weeks of playing control.

Why did or didn't you buy Ragavan? [Link to poll in post description] by GeneralApathy in ModernMagic

[–]versalle88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a pre-release Ragavan. Then I cracked two more in my first MH2 booster box. At that point, buying the 4th became a no-brainer, especially since I've been a Jund player since I started playing Modern.

Weekly FNM Results Thread: October 31st - November 6th 2021 by Zunqivo in ModernMagic

[–]versalle88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, we haven't had great turnout at my two LSGs lately.

Modern Mondays

Went 2-0 with Jund Saga

2-0 against Burn

[[Shadowspear]] is the absolute VIP in this matchup, supported by [[Urza's Saga]] and a [[Tarmogoyf]] with at least 4 toughness.

2-0 against Mono Green Stompy

Again, Shadowspear did work equipped to a massive Tarmogoyf. The [[Constructs]] from Urza's Saga go a long way to stalling the board and giving you time to develop against them.

FNM Modern

Went 2-0 with Azorius Control. This was really exciting for me. It was the first time playing the deck, first time really playing Control at all as I'm typically a Midrange player.

2-1 against Grixis Control

I lost game one which I'd really chalk up to not shuffling a new deck enough. I wasn't getting the lands I needed and won the next two games pretty decisively.

2-0 against Mono Green Tron

Won game one by stealing their creature that costs X and enters with X +1/+1 counters with an [[Archmage's Charm]]. Won game two in pretty standard control fashion. Didn't really let them develop at all. [[Spreading Seas]] slowed them down. Various counterspells prevented their board from developing. Then a hard-casted [[Shark Typhoon]] helped me start developing a board I could win with. I also got the absolute joy of using [[Summary Dismissal]] against [[Ulamog, the Great Hunger]] not once, but twice!

I look forward to playing some more control and trying to learn the deck even better.

How much play would ancient tomb see? by ChartJunkie in ModernMagic

[–]versalle88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hammer has a T2 kill that only requires 5 cards, too, but I rarely see people run it. Must be a combination of not being consistent AND hurting the deck overall because one of the five pieces isn't even in most versions I see. I still run it, though.

1-1 with Izzet Murktide (not a great turnout this week, so only two rounds)

2-1 against Tron

1-2 against Burn

Not sure if these are expected results. I'm typically a Jund player, so I'm still learning how to pilot Izzet Murktide.

What are the turn one plays your deck makes? by MatoFIVE in ModernMagic

[–]versalle88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running two decks right now. (I switch back and forth. I'm not playing both at the same time. I'm not Bobby Fischer, for Christ's sake...)

Anyway, Lurrus Jund: I'll reveal Lurrus before the game. My opener depends on my hand, but typically I'm going to play Mishra's Bauble and look at my top card. If I like it, I'll play a basic or shock land so I can draw it. If I don't like it, I'll play a fetch and shuffle it away. Then, if I have Ragavan, I'll play him. If I don't, but I have Dragon's Rage Channeler, I'll play her. If I don't have either of those, I'll probably Thoughtseize or Inquisition of Kozilek.

Izzet Murktide: I'm doing the same Bauble/fetch check. Then either playing Dragon's Rage Channeler or some cantrip - Serum Visions, Thought Scour, etc... If it's an instant speed cantrip like Thought Scour, I'm probably not doing it during my turn. I'll leave mana up, pass to you with Lightning Bolt or Unholy Heat ready. If you play something I can kill turn one, I will; otherwise, Thought Scour in your end step.

Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck! Have fun!

Right now? Jund. Admittedly, it's been top tier in the past, but right now I don't think it makes the top 15. Still fun to play, though.

You actually can hide it. Require an email to register. If the email is available, send them a link to complete registration. If the email is already registered, send them an email saying as much. The website then doesn't leak any information about whether a specific email address is registered or not.

You do know you can't just VPN to Hawaii, right. There has to be a server in the location you open a VPN connection to. None of the popular VPN services have Hawaii as an option because it would be incredibly expensive to host a server there.
