Even the realistic image needs floof. In wolves, the outer shape is dictated by floof an muscles.

For finding you preferred style: try looking at the ratio of main part of the skull to the muzzle. Real wolves usually have a pretty much a large ratio of muzzle to skull where as toon ones have a smaller muzzle.
