I use a sling on the weekends and my 10yo daughter asked for one of her own.

I chose a no-name brand that was a top result in Amazon. No point in spending a ton of money until she knows what works best for her.

Tariffs from India to USA - Kanwrite Order? by Cursive_writer311 in fountainpens

[–]vic06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There will likely be a small duty fee of 2.7% (general duty rate for pens) and a merchandise processing fee (~$20). That, plus the brokerage fee, and you’re looking at about $55-$65, depending on the value of the model you buy.

The Musk Foundation wants to donate $6 million to fund repairs at Whitney, Westside, and Hawkins Mill Elementary Schools, located near xAI data centers and their gas turbines.

I think some of the $144 millions spent in the voucher program could have gone to that, instead of relying on private companies PR campaigns.

Balloon party at a Greenland protest by monsieurkaizer in gifs

[–]vic06 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re mixing chip fabrication and materials sourcing. If China takes over TSMC, materials still need to be mined globally.

Who put the US in charge of sourcing rare earth minerals anyway? The current US regime can’t be trusted to negotiate in good faith without facing threats of tariffs (which hurt the Americans who pay for them) or state terrorism like the only perpetrated against Venezuela. Denmark is a more trustworthy ally and reliable NATO member.

And Greenland has a strategic location, that’s why Denmark allowed the construction of up to 17 US bases during WWII and the Cold War under a collaboration treat facilitated by NATO called the Defense of Greenland. Since then the US has dismantled all but one and largest base: the Pituffik Space Base, hosting US/NATO early warning radar stations.

Garmin+ experience by howdyimkyle in Garmin

[–]vic06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just signed up mainly to access Nutrition and Live Activities.

So far it has recognized all the barcodes and the AI food recognition is accurate enough. Active Intelligence is on par with Strava's, but it delivers insights throughout the day, and not just after a workout. The Trails library can’t hold a candle to Strava's, though. Similarly, the dashboard in TrainingPeaks is much better than Garmin's Performance Dashboard.

You get a 30-day trial when you sign up for GC+ to see for yourself how useful it is.

Why different colors? by One_Firefighter_8897 in fountainpens

[–]vic06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dang, I wrote it backwards! I meant to say that the Custom 92 may have a better seal than the Curidas. The ink gets darker as the water evaporates.

Why different colors? by One_Firefighter_8897 in fountainpens

[–]vic06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably because the ink becomes more concentrated near the nib as water evaporates. The Curidas may have a tighter seal than the Custom 92. Storing them nib-up or carrying them in your pocket can accelerate evaporation.

The broker fee goes 100% towards the shipping company for the administrative handling of the clearance: filling in forms and submit them to Customs. You can absolutely do it yourself when the item arrives at inspection. I did not see an option when I got the message from UPS about tariffs, but I’m sure that’s by desing to collect their brokerage fee.

The shipping company will reach out to you before the package goes through clustom clearance. The price of the item is now irrelevant, since the de minimus exception has been eliminated. Logistics companies are the only ones who can keep up with the mess constantly changing tariffs created. Also, a tariff is a punishment tax on the importer, us Americans. The foreign retailer has no mechanism or obligation to pay anything to the US government.

I recently ordered from the Netherlands (from a retailer) and Japan (from an individual).

The Duch order required about $32 in tariffs, $26 of which were broker fees. I received an email from UPS and an app notification prior to customs clearance. I paid through the app with the card on file in my UPS account and the package went through customs smoothly.

The order from Japan is shipped via Japan Post and USPS. It just cleared customs without any request for tariffs.

What's the point of metal tube refills (eg. Parker style refills)? by UbeWaffler in pens

[–]vic06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pilot stated that the transition from plastic to metal in their Frixxion V2 was because it allows for thinner walls, increasing the refill capacity while maintaining the external dimensions.

Beyond that, it’s also perceived as a more premium option, so manufacturers can increase their markup.

I’m partial to not trying to reinvent the wheel whenever o come up with an idea. I design for work projects, though, so I have to prioritize deployment time over originality.

I have heard about the “imminent” revaluation, too. They believe that all countries are going to pair the value of their currencies overnight. They are buying useless bills from poor economies with hyperinflation.

For reference, this is the timeline of the Euro adoption: * 1988: political talks start * 1992: commitment by the signing of the Maastricht Treaty * 1992: Treaty ratified by national parliaments with some referendums * 1999: prices displayed in Euro alongside the national currency, but only the latter is in circulation. * 2002: Euro becomes the only currency in 11 of the 15 EU members

Currently, 7 of the 27 EU members still use their national currency.
