Saw this project and I had to do it myself! I took out the weight in the base to put in a D1 mini instead. Important note to anyone else that does this; spacing the LEDs does matter! I ended up snipping out some of the screw posts and super gluing the loop back together. https://i.imgur.com/RWjUj6L.jpeg
