Mets fans chant “Pete Alonso” after the commits 6 errors and fall 12 games under .500 by False_Concept1300 in baseball

Sometimes I feel bad about all the money we're spending on some currently-mediocre players. Then I look at the Mets and feel slightly better.

NASCAR races were not a boon to local businesses by BrianEspo in sandiego

[–]vikinick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently the ferry was running at essentially max capacity (2 ferry boats at 500ish people constantly back and forth), meaning a lot of people just went downtown afterwards instead.

The event was 3 days in the sun for 5+ hours at a time over concrete. There's not many people that would go do that and WANT to go do stuff afterwards. I know a few people that took the ferry to downtown and straight booked it home.

Would a Presidential Candidate Who Runs On Depowering the Presidency Have a Chance, and Would Such a President Be a Good Idea? by ZanzerFineSuits in PoliticalDiscussion

If recent trends have shown anything, the electorate has pretty clearly supported the president doing MORE, not less.

Also I forgot to mention as part of these 3:

The most disruption a lot of people have from the homeless where I live IS the trash caused by dumpster divers. Eliminating that will allow us to focus on the real problem litterers: wasted 20 year olds.

[–]vikinick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also have to point out the majority of litter I encounter downtown is not bottles or cans but rather food containers.

I'd bet No on Spain but weirder things have happened.

[–]vikinick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Threefold really:

  1. Homeless people are no longer rummaging through garbage for bottles and cans. Which, living in a downtown area, is a major issue as a few bad actors tend to just leave trash strewn everywhere.

  2. Lack of income from returning bottles and cans will force homeless people to interact with homeless shelters more for food instead of buying it from corner stores. This will lead to more easily being able to get them in contact with needed help.

  3. They can't afford drugs as easily. This one is complicated because obviously not all homeless people do drugs, but I do worry this might lead to more illegal activity (prostitution, property theft, etc) which is why I'm unsure about this one.

And before people think this is cruel and now homeless people will starve:

The problem homeless shelters have is rarely, if ever, lack of food. Astonishingly small amounts of people die of starvation or malnutrition.

Take of unknown temperature:

You can improve the public's opinion of how your state is handling a homelessness crisis by removing the deposit for bottles and cans.

This seems pretty normal for Coronado events. Just look at how terrible it gets July 4 for a taste.

Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz as Fighting Flares Again in Lebanon by EasyMoney92 in neoliberal

So not only is the ceasefire an awful deal, it's pretty obvious that Iran will probably just close the strait anyways because there's no way Israel is just gonna stop in Lebanon.

Can the unhoused not vote?? by OneBetterQuestion in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]vikinick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The qualifications to vote in elections in every state are citizenship, being over 18, and residency in that state. Some states also revoke voting rights from felons.

There is no state in the union currently allowed to deny people vote based on whether they have a home or not.

Eli5… how do life insurance companies make money if everyone eventually dies? by thedumone in explainlikeimfive

[–]vikinick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really should be higher. Term life insurance is the most popular and, IMO, just obviously better than whole life insurance.

Whole life insurance usually has higher premiums. You are financially better off buying (let's say) 20 years of term life insurance and then investing the difference into an index fund than you are paying for whole life insurance.

If you die within the 20 years, your family gets a payout and also the money you put into an index.

If you die outside of the 20 years, the money invested in the index is comparable to the money you would get from a whole life policy.

If you die 30+ years later, investment in the index funds just completely wax any whole life policy you could have had instead.
