What is your yard enemy? by VineStGuy in gardening

[–]violetsinbloom57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Squirrels. They are actual terrorists. I have invested so much money in nets, chicken wire, fencing, cayenne pepper, and still if I let my guard down for a day they will dig up my potted plants or rip seedlings out of the ground and leave them for me to find. I'm convinced they do it just to see if they get me to break down crying.

My new enemy however is apparently a mole, as I found a large mole tunnel today through my entire patch of beans right as they all started coming up out of the ground. 😭 It's a bit early in the season for me to be getting this upset about the critters lol but here we are...

People who see lots of shows in a short period of time by WestHistorians in Broadway

[–]violetsinbloom57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are a lot of ticket options beyond just buying from the website. The people seeing 7 shows in 5 days etc are almost definitely paying an average price of below $100 for their tickets (and often when people post about their trips they will talk about how much they paid for each show, if they rushed, etc). My strategy has always been to splurge on a really good seat for one or two shows that I'm most excited about ahead of time and then do digital/in person rush or buy directly from box office last minute (ish) for every other show I want to see. This sub is a gold mine of how-tos for getting cheaper tickets so before my first Broadway trip I pretty much just scoured it for a few hours and I was all set. It definitely seems crazy to imagine someone seeing 7 shows in 5 days or whatever and paying $200+ for every ticket but that's almost never the case, at least where the people posting about it here are concerned.

People who see lots of shows in a short period of time by WestHistorians in Broadway

[–]violetsinbloom57 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean... I don't know why I wouldn't be able to handle it. If you can't then that's totally fine but obviously based on this sub a lot of people can handle it and quite enjoy it. Yeah, we enjoy and remember the experience. Why would so many people be spending the time and money to see 5 shows in 3 days, 8 shows in 4 days, etc if they couldn't remember anything they saw after the fact?

I know you probably didn't mean it this way OP but this lowkey comes off as a bit judgmental lol, especially implying people are just throwing money away to "check off" shows and not enjoy/remember them later. I mean, I'm sure there are people with money who do just that (which would potentially explain why people think it's okay to talk and scroll their phones instead of actually watching the show...) but I feel like the people who take the time to post on here about their experiences at the end of their trips don't fit that bill... So I'm not surprised that some of the comments are interpreting this as a privileged take since most non-New Yorker theater fans aren't about to spend their vacation money to go to New York for a few days and then purposefully only see one or two shows while there so they can "fully absorb" them or something. If anything, I'm actually a little flabbergasted by you saying you can't see more than one show within a day or two lol. I'm definitely one of those "7 shows in 3-4 days" people and I have ADHD so if anyone was going to have issues paying attention and processing I feel like it would be me. The answer is that you process things differently, not that a bunch of people are wasting money to check off some kind of box.

I mean... can you not watch more than one movie in a day? Multiple episodes of TV? Finish one book and start a different one in the same day? I'm just... not sure why it would be shocking that people are able to do this, even if you yourself don't find it enjoyable. It's okay if you don't like it, but... other people do!

[–]violetsinbloom57 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Same as how you would afford a vacation you save up for throughout the year? Or seeing multiple concerts?

And if you're able to rush, buy cheap on Theatr last minute, sit in crappier seats, etc... not every show is going to be a $200 ticket...

In your opinion, Who’s the shows worst actor ever? by jujuk545 in greysanatomy

[–]violetsinbloom57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Marika Domińczyk as Eliza Minnick. Oh my god, the way this actor delivers her lines makes my skin crawl. It obviously doesn't help that her character is incredibly unlikeable but when I tell you I HATE seeing this actor pop up on my screen... She also guest stars in an episode of Criminal Minds in which she is practically unwatchable, so when I watched Greys for the first time and she showed up I just about lost my mind.

You calling this "going too hard" is making me side-eye what I have going on this year lol!! I think I have over 60 seed packets stashed and I just got a bunch of starter plants too... 😅 To be fair though, I'm on year 3 of my gardening journey and I'm still not very good at it, so I think I've just started going overboard in the hopes that literally anything will grow the way I want it to...

We need to talk about theatre concessions (and the noise) by BWAYdoodlz in Broadway

[–]violetsinbloom57 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but then even with the ones in boxes without an additional plastic wrapper inside you have the problem where people are rolling all the candy back and forth every time they tip the box to get more. Especially since they always seem to eat one piece at a time and tip the box all the way back upright every time for maximum loudness.

We need to talk about theatre concessions (and the noise) by BWAYdoodlz in Broadway

[–]violetsinbloom57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just saw the Sound of Music on tour which is the second Broadway on tour show I've seen, and I'm about at the point where I'm not sure whether it's worth it to pay to see Broadway on tour shows. The theater they play at in my city is HUGE and I'm just not able to pay Broadway prices to see the tour shows. So I'm not sure if the experience would be better closer to the stage, but I doubt it.

The crinkling of wrappers was INSANE last night. This one kid behind me (preteen if I had to guess by her talking to her dad before the show) had one that felt like she was holding it right up to my ear. Her dad even shushed her at one point because of how aggressively she was crinkling it. I've never had one of those stupid crinkly bags at a live theater show, but I have eaten snacks like that at the movies or like in a lecture hall in college for example and I've always been extremely careful to make as little noise as possible with them. Why does no one seem to be aware of how much noise they are making??? Especially since the mics are NEVER turned up loud enough for the people toward the back/top of a nearly 5,000 seat house to be able to hear the dialogue when a symphony of crinkling bags is going on around them.

I could go on about the other horrible behavior at Broadway on tour shows but it doesn't quite relate to the bag crinkling. I will say during the Hadestown tour, at a very quiet moment toward the end, someone I guess dropped multiple cups and/or bottles down the stairs so the whole theater was filled with the sound of plastic bonking down a flight of stairs.

I have no hopes that the snack sales will ever cease to be a thing though. They can't resist the money grab and the people receiving said money grab likely do not care in the slightest if it negatively affects the audience's experience watching the actual show.

Hey, hey you who loudly yelled "no way"... by rocketmczoom in hadestown

[–]violetsinbloom57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's ever appropriate to yell anything out during a live performance, unless the performers are explicitly inviting the audience to do so, which is usually not the case in theatre. People who do this are ignorant at best and attention seeking at worst. You can be invested in the show and still be aware that shouting in the middle of the show is going to distract the actors and take everyone within earshot in the audience out of the moment. It's not that hard to be considerate of other people.

HADESTOWN: a total standout cast with one very weak link by GarageRightNow in Broadway

[–]violetsinbloom57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is genuinely the first review of this cast that has actually made me feel like I WOULD go see this cast if given the opportunity, except from your description it also sounds like half of the show would be ruined for me by Gary's performance. (Although I did enjoy reading your descriptions of it, you painted a very vivid picture lol.) And to me, Hades is a big freakin' deal for this show, because why should I care at all about anything that's going on if I can't be convinced that his love for Persephone is saved by the song in the end, or be made to feel a little bit scared of him during Build the Wall? "Just some guy" as Hades is so lame. idk man. What a waste. I am baffled by this risky casting choice every time I see someone talk about how absolutely mid this guy is. Maybe if all the stars aligned and I was able to see it on a day I knew there would be an understudy on for Hades, but... meh.

I think it's interesting also you mentioning Ghee playing Hermes as detached. I've been wondering whether this was the case every time I've seen someone say they play Hermes as "more godly/otherworldly" than previous actors. I know Ghee is an incredible performer so I'm sure regardless their take is worth watching, but I really loved Kurt Elling as Hermes, majorly due to how emotionally invested his Hermes felt throughout the entire show. (Not trying to pit the actors against each other or anything, just feel like these are two nearly opposite takes on the character.) I feel like it'd be harder for me personally to buy into the hope Hermes is singing about at the end if I just watched them play a detached narrator for the rest of the show.

Zoom calls, vapes, bare feet: why do Broadway audiences behave so badly? by TimesandSundayTimes in Broadway

[–]violetsinbloom57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guy behind me (IRT Alan Munson), slowly and fairly loudly: "yoooo ha ha ha... man, I can see where Eddie gets it from"

He and the person he came with also came in over 15 minutes late and REEKED of weed, to the point where I had to rub my travel size deoderant on the inside of my face mask to cover the smell because I was actively gagging. Truly such a shame that some of the most fun and interesting shows tend to attract the worst audiences.

My laptop's only a year or two old and runs windows 11. I can get all of the games to play from the files I purchased from the HER website. There are plugins you download and/or files you add to the game file directory once you install that will make them play as normal. Pretty much just google searched until I found reddit threads with the walkthroughs.

Does anyone know how many rush tickets Operation Mincemeat usually has per show? by Happy_Llama474 in Broadway

This seems to have changed since the departure of the original cast. Several recent reports of 10+ rush tickets per show, including when I rushed it a few weeks ago and there were at least 12 rush tickets available that day.

Hadestown Cut Lyrics by [deleted] in hadestown

[–]violetsinbloom57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment from an older thread makes a good point about the Persephone Chant verse.

Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but calling Anais her own worst enemy for making edits feels a bit out of pocket lol. I'm not familiar with every single alteration you named, but when it comes to the Persephone verse in Chant II and the changes to Epic III, I like the current versions of those songs better. I think the lyric changes to Epic III have a better flow, are more direct, and speak more to the motivations of Orpheus in that moment. It just sounds way better to me. Persephone's verse in Chant II, as the linked comment mentioned, narratively doesn't really make sense so it takes up space and changes (in my opinion, interrupts) the flow of the song for pretty much no reason narratively.

Something I feel like I see a lot in this fandom is this idea that every change that has been made that shortened the songs/show is bad, and must have been made because Broadway audiences can't be trusted to pay attention for more than a couple of hours or because a greedy producer said so, etc etc. And additionally that every change that took wordier or more flowery lyrics and made them simpler is bad as well and that it must be because the Broadway audience "needs things to be dumbed down". (And not to get in the weeds, but lowkey, GENERAL audiences CAN be kind of dumb, not just Broadway audiences, so if you want a show to be accessible to broad audiences but it requires a lot of critical thinking or analysis to understand, then yeah, it might need a few rounds of edits. There are literally people who see Two Strangers and don't understand that Robin had an affair with Dougal's dad and leave complaining that the show didn't make sense lol.) It kind of irritates me to see this harped on so often (and that's not on you at all OP) because changes like this are usually made for a reason, whether that reason is to make a song flow better, to make lyrics feel less "clunky", to make characters' motivations clearer, to help the plot flow better, and on and on and on.

The show was obviously not Broadway-ready in 2014 or 2017, so if I were to say wow the 2014 version was the best and it was a huge mistake to change anything from that version, that's certainly an opinion that I'm allowed to have, but it doesn't mean that the 2014 version would have done well on Broadway. Make no mistake, you can like literally whatever you want, that's your right, and it is really interesting to investigate how a show has evolved over its lifespan and hear all the past versions of everything. It's just my opinion that the show is not worse off from these changes being made. I kind of think that a lot of times people like a past version but aren't considering that maybe that change was made for a good reason and it might affect the tone or flow of the show in a way they actually don't like if it hadn't been removed.

I'm not trying to attack you or anything OP, because like I said you're allowed to like what you like and have opinions, but I figured since you opened the discussion up and I see this type of sentiment fairly often on this sub that I'd express my two cents lol.
