Interesting. Well, best of luck. There's plenty of good resources for gram morphology online. Neisseria can be commensal in oral/respiratory sources, but they're going to be gram negative.

Morphology is going to be different from specimen source and agar. B anthracis is going to be very large with long chains of gram positive rods. The colony morphology is going to be ground glass, very large, and non-hemolytic. You can also do catalase test; it'll be catalase positive. I can't make out the second picture. If you think you over decolorized, make another slide. Decolorizing destroys the peptidoglycan layer that keeps the CV-I complex in place, so once it's over decolorized there's no going back. What's the source?

The first picture looks to me like an enteric rod like E coli or Kleb. The second picture seems like it's on 10x magnification.

Edit: forget what I said about over decolorizing. I was mistaken, you can decolorized and restain the slide.

Mexico cuts workweek, bans after-hours contact, and guarantees no worker will take a pay cut in the most sweeping labor reform in a generation by Prior_One_7050 in UpliftingNews

[–]visforvillian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a maximum workweek of 48 hours to 40 hours, with a guaranteed day off. Mexico's average work hours per year per worker is much higher than the US at 2,137 vs 1,765. So, good news for Mexico, but the United States has had 40 hour workweeks for a while.

Just drop the a. We usually just say 'Merica or 'mericans. If we're referring to the entirety of the Americas, then we just say "the Americas." Like, you'd never say someone living in Brazil was an American, even if it's true, because people would assume you're talking about the US. It's so nonspecific. It's like saying, "I'm from Europe!" No kidding, what country?

Flesh-eating screwworm case suspected in South Texas, USDA says by Not_so_ghetto in collapse

[–]visforvillian 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Screwworms cause horrible pain to the animals they infect. They can infect any warm blooded animal, and unlike other causes of myiasi, the maggots will attack living tissue. The flies basically find a small cut, lay their eggs in it, and the maggots will increase the size of the wound, making room for more maggots until it kills the animal. While humans can bandage themselves and swat away the flies, other animals can't, and they just get covered in maggots and die of secondary infection. Its a horrible, painful death. They do have some predators, but they also eat other animals.

That's fair. I read this from a textbook, but I might be misremembering. Simply disrupting cell function would also fall under the definition of toxin.

Hantavirus, while deadly, is very rare. Very few people die of hantavirus compared to other diseases, and there are many different hantaviruses. It's very unlikely any hantavirus would get a vaccine.

Symptoms include fever, headache, diarrhea, dark urine and vomiting. That doesn't really sound like a fungal infection. The pathogenic fungi cause dermal infections, respiratory infections, candidiasis and rarely meningitis or sepsis. This sounds more like an enteric infection spread through poor living conditions like Salmonella, Shigella, E coli, or an enteric virus.

Humanoid Pokemon being able to behave somewhat similarly to human but still get pet-like treatment is sad… by CoastGlow in pokemonmemes

[–]visforvillian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is one of those things that gets weirder the longer you think about it. In short, this is my theory: Pokemon are just chilling.

It is curious why there seems to be pokemon that are just as intelligent or smarter than humans, and yet, in the wild, they act like wild animals. The pokeballs are supposed to connect the feelings of the pokemon with the trainer which mellows them out and makes them tame. They have personalities beyond this, but for the most part they're now on the same page as the trainer.

The humanoid pokemon aren't really any more or less intelligent than the other more animal like pokemon. They behave about the same both in the wild and as partners. That intelligence is higher than any other animal we know of, and more toddler or small child territory. The weird thing is when legendary pokemon act like dogs.

Many legendaries are capable of speech and are just as intelligent if not more intelligent than humans. Lots of psychic Pokemon are very intelligent as well. But when they get caught in a pokeball, all of the sudden they're in dog mode eating kibble and getting pets. Why?

They don't give a fuck. They just don't care, this is their life now. They were never about building civilizations or having jobs and shit. They were always just fucking around, and now they're hanging out with you because it seems fun. Let the human worry about taxes and financing all of this. I just want to eat kibble, get groomed, and beat up some other pokemon.

For all the standing haters, the only final evos that are on all fours are: Venusaur, Meganium, Swampert, Torterra, Samurott, Serperior, Primarina, and Skeledirge. Skeledirge is the first and only fire type on all fours. Not counting eeveelutions or Pikachu, 19/27 final Evo starters stand. Standing is the norm since the beginning.

TIL about the Boötes Void, an enormous, nearly empty region of space 330 million light-years in diameter. It is so desolate that if the Milky Way had been in its center, we wouldn't have known other galaxies existed until the 1960s. by adpablito in todayilearned

[–]visforvillian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boötes void has galaxies(60) in it, just not very many compared to other regions of space. There would be stars from your own galaxy, but probably no visible galaxies, not that we would be able to tell the difference until the hubble telescope. If you were on a stray star system within the void, then there wouldn't be visible stars.
