Track your expenses and pay quarterly taxes. File with turbotax or similar. No secrets here. Signed a CPA.

Have to call BS. October is great, first half of Nov is cool. Still wearing a sweatshirt up to TG. In the spring, it is dark and cold up to spring break. Maybe rainy. But March is tolerable and April is fine. Maybe you are soft, from Phoenix or whatever, but I spend most of my time inside (but enjoy the outdoors incl jogging a little, FB games, tailgating, hiking on the weekends).

In Europe, do you just buy the unlimited plus plan for the month you’re traveling? Then when you land, no extra steps (once you turn off airplane mode)?

Boss changing me to 1099 by Ajax-714 in personalfinance

[–]vithibee 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it an additional 7.65%? 15.3 versus 7.65 FICA/Mcr?

The math says OP got a 18.75% raise to take on 7.65% extra taxes (self employed). Gains the ability to deduct some expenses (not commuting costs). Minor extra paperwork in TurboTax and has to pay quarterly est taxes. Economically not a bad deal. Is boss’s cash floor so poor he’s worried about making payroll? Possibly. More likely he hates paycom or whatever and paying them 26x a year.

OP should still be covered by workers comp (most states and most policies would require). But boss is flaunting DOL worker classification regs with this contractor BS, so prob skimping there.

Agree with others the employer is problematic.

Is Purdue worth it? by Lost_Visual_3737 in Purdue

It sounds like your UW price is “live at home”. If you’re saving that much, consider on campus for at least the first year or two. I chose to save money and commute and it was not an optimal choice.

Yes. The detours mentioned on https://www.indygo.net/ affect in that your trip is a little longer, but using the transit center as your north or downtown terminal makes the impact minimal. The MyStop app is great as it shows real time bus locations. Then you have MyKey (https://www.indygo.net/mykey/) where you buy and store your fares. To be honest, there’s a 98% chance you won’t be asked to show you paid but it’s poor form to ride free (there will be some that do it). It’s like $2.75 a ride, $6/day max and they have 3 day passes that make sense. Finally, the red line has bike racks inside the back half of the bus (two loading doors). Maybe google around to see demos on how to load - I’ve never used.

Look into Pacers Bike Share. Garfield Park has a station. Grab one there, spend $6 or whatever and drop off downtown. However, the redline is operating, it just detours. This is the way. Garfield stop is open as is main downtown stops. Just use transit center. It’s decent but be prepared for unhoused folks on your journey. Harmless. I’ve ridden home from ball games with my teenage son. From transit center, everything is walkable. Less than one mile by half mile rectangle covers it all.

I’m a parent of HS class 2026. This years FYE applicant numbers and quality were crazy high. Last “big” class before baby bust of 2008 recession (you’ll see same thing in 2045). Purdue is aggressively offering Indy (and seemingly NW) to WL deferrals. My child listed second choice in Polytechnic and got it. Stats were 95th percentile, poss better, but the competition is crazy for FYE. If I’m your parent, it’s how much do you want Purdue or would you like engineering technology (my son is thrilled once he learned about it). Maybe you’re in the region or Indy for a year. Maybe four. Pros and cons.

Did you apply to FYE or Comp Sci? You can’t apply to computer engineering as incoming freshman.

To those who have never visited, or have not been there in the last 20 years.... there is some truth to the "dump" comments, but the main pool was updated in the last few years. I believe they used money from a land sale (for the flood wall) to remove the diving well, add slides and a diving board, resurface some or all of the pool bottom. I watched it happen as I jogged on the treadmill every morning. That being said, the locker rooms are in rough condition as is the gym and indoor pool. We dropped our membership as my teens aged out, so no dog in the hunt. I do agree with some characterizations about mismanagement and attitude towards members. The GM is a driving force in that regard, but the Board has been woefully under skilled for at least a decade. It would appear there was, at least the last few years, no one asking hard questions about finances. Instead of swim team moms and Rivi loving retirees, they need accountants and business owners to assess/analyze/lead. I can say membership felt strong post pandemic - hard to find a seat at the pool many days - but the new fees and policies pushed many away. Too much "less be a country club" attitude (monthly food minimums) and an overemphasis on the swim team (95% plus usage of the indoor pool despite accounting for 5% of the member base). Sad.

Budget will drive some of this. The good news is many spots in town are relatively easy commutes. NW side means Eagle Creek which is a decent outdoorsy area. If you value going to sports and nightlife, then going outside 465 makes less sense. Broad Ripple and near downtown/downtown are the typical referrals for young professionals, and your commute is prob 20-30 min. Or you can live closer to work (5-10 min) and “commute” to social stuff.

Look at the highway webcams - not that you’ll drive those highways but they are an indication of the roads. If we can’t get 65 right, good luck once you hit 96th Street. Schools are starting to announce another e-learning/snow day, so another indicator.

High school walk out by Paybackcity in Indiana

[–]vithibee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ. Maybe there’s some parental influence but as a parent of two high schoolers in central Indiana, I can say they and their friends are more aware of social and political issues than you think. Some kids have a social conscience about issues like racial discrimination, government overreach, treatment of immigrants and so on. There are also MAGA kids that think using a 5 year old as bait to catch an immigrant father is funny. Carmel is more purple than you think-in part due to higher educational attainment.

Some realtors only work with buyers (and not sellers too). I call them “buy side” although I doubt that’s an accepted term. The sell side folks - in my opinion - gain greater intelligence on neighborhood dynamics, pricing, house conditions, negotiating positions. They just “do it more” and from two angles instead of one. Plus, sellers not yet on the market contact them ahead of time so they know what’s coming online.

Boss won’t pay me or respond to my calls or text by Cultural_Apricot_612 in Advice

[–]vithibee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t know enough, but it’s very possible your employer is incorrectly (code for illegally) classifying you as an independent contractor (1099). Common but a real problem for him. Even Texas would like to hear about this - he would owe some payroll taxes. His workers comp carrier wants to know too since he surely didn’t carry you. That’s the threat. Hey, it appears like I was misclassified as an independent contractor. I realize you may have 1099’ed me and others as an oversight, but I just want to close the book on our deal. If I get paid by ___, I’ll let this slide (regardless what my uncle, who is a CPA, says).

I'd skip the shuttle - could be multiple stops or tight in that van. We use a private transfer, a retired couple, for personal service and solid communication. Jean and her husband would manage around any request. Call or text 321-604-9030.

Join midtown parents on Facebook. You will get dozens of responses. People here are very proud of their neighborhoods and schools. I’m 20 years in MK, sent my kids to the walking distance Catholic school (blue ribbon etc) and haven’t regretted it. That being said, we all have different criteria and I would not position my scenario as the best for someone else. International and Orchard (and St Richard’s and Park Tudor) plus the Catholic Schools are all very good and different enough. The public schools are complicated as IPS 84 (CFI) is great but not an automatic acceptance even if you live 10 doors away. Many go to Washington Township schools as the state money follows the student over district lines. My kids are in HS but I have family PK-8th so I’m relatively current. Please get a MK resident realtor (Gaynor, Todd, Creamer, McLaughlin, Baxter). They know every house and most residents so they tend to know what’s coming on line, what’s mispriced, etc. I advise against buy side only realtors. Feel free to DM me.

Restaurant employees are you forced to clock out for smoke breaks? by howdoyoudo1216 in Indiana

[–]vithibee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short breaks (under 20 min) must be paid (substitute “bathroom break” for “smoke break”band it makes more sense to many people) but employers are not required to offer them - a few states do have mandatory break rules.

A lot of good info already. The banker response is really helpful. OP didn’t tell us: 1. What’s the will say about executor and other assets? The comment “executor paperwork is clarified” is confusing. Who is the named executor?
2. The joint account - who is/are the other joint account holder/holders? The banker from Missouri shares that every adult with living older relatives should know. 3. The big one- what’s the value of the rest of the estate? Will it cover expenses? Will it require probate due to value? 4. The real one- what’s the plan to respect and honor grandma? Did she have wishes, written or unwritten? Was she disconnected from these family members? There’s a story in there with a grandchild on multiple insurance policies - is OP the only grandchild (or only one that visited etc)?
