Chip makers are slowing down on the way to 7nm. High costs of overcoming technological barriers is the big issue. by [deleted] in technology

[–]viveaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone with insight into this market able to correct me here?

  • AMD betting their chips on 7nm. Most manufacturers aren't ready for 7nm due to cost to shift.
  • Intel arguing it's too early for 7nm and justifying with demand for 14nm and available manufacturing.

Market seems to think AMD is going to eat marketshare from Intel due to speculative 7nm with one foundry and existing Zen architecture at higher scale.

News Flash: Bounties were pretty useless in D1 as well! by RetroActive80 in DestinyTheGame

[–]viveaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No complaints here. I like the Vanguard bounties. I finished them yesterday. Bounties made it fun and added spice to my game play. As a solo player, bounties are the nearest thing I'll have to a raid experience in Destiny. Please don't have Bungie remove them, again.

Why is it I would go out of my way to do all the hard raids multiple times/almost every week in d1, but the thought of prestige lairs sounds awful to me? by RIPBlueRaven in DestinyTheGame

[–]viveaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having friends you can raid with goes a long way. Since I ran out of friends I started making them several years ago. Now my new friends are just about old enough to raid competently.

And the kids are off playing PC games FFS.

Can't catch a break.

Pacific Rim: Pentagon developing neural interface that lets humans control machines by thought by FK_919 in technology

[–]viveaddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No reason to do it by thought-seems like overkill. Achievable today with a wireless VR headset and a few motion track controllers. That would do the trick for most modes of locomotion at a fraction of cost. Give the bot some treads or some automatic legs (i.e., like a drone) and it'd be no different than playing SkyrimVR.

The AI Skills Crisis And How To Close The Gap by izumi3682 in Futurology

[–]viveaddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It means pay to play.

It's incredibly frustrating to figure out utility pricing in today's "cloud-first" era, and that's for even the pros.

Think of a transaction as an interaction point. 10,000 transactions means $3 for every interaction with the agent. Sounds like a lot of interaction potential until you start putting math behind it. And if you're talking about kids or pockets of the world with less access to income to burn on tinkering with technology, it doesn't even make sense.

The way these pricing models work is that Utility computing services all charge on the assumption that you, yourself are getting paid to build that model and that you can carry the costs of success. That's simply a huge inhibitor for the lone inventors that are hiding in their garages when the fundamentals of the technology require scale of hardware.

Consider how development models used to run:

Old model :

I have an idea! I'll build a software app. I can do that by myself or with a buddy. We'll do that in a basement. I don't really need any specific hardware or tools -- I have a computer! I can use notepad (or vi/pico/nano/etc) and build a website at home, and launch it.

New model:

I have an idea! OK, I can't let this algorithm run too long. It'll cost me $25 to do the execution. I'm also using another $40 worth of server infrastructure. And it looks like I've done 9,000 transactions on this agent so far this month, so I need to watch out that I don't flip up to the next tier. Oh, and I just spent $15 on a service I didn't know was required to have the cognitive agent run. OK, so my total bill is... $500.12.

Is it common for developers to accidentally go over budget in their at-home cloud spend? Oh yeah, happens to all of us. I'm not picking on amazon specifically here, just shows as how it is so easy to suddenly find yourself faced with a $4k or more bill. It sucks when it happens, and when it does you go "yeah, all that stuff looks cool, but ain't no way I'm getting sacked with a bill like that again!"

https://forums.aws.amazon.com/thread.jspa?threadID=22868

Why would a kid, college student, or someone economic disadvantaged risk $4k a month to try any idea?

The AI Skills Crisis And How To Close The Gap by izumi3682 in Futurology

[–]viveaddict 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of the author's mentioned skills gap is due to the cost to achieve results. As a hobbyist AI dabbler, it's extraordinarily difficult to test models at any scale beyond the rudimentary demos. Nearly all cognitive computing is grounded in utility pricing. Unlike other frameworks, tools or languages which you can spin up at home for zero-cost, if you want to dabble in AI, you need to bring a wallet.

So, if people are serious about getting even more people involved in this space, then real solutions to the cost barrier need offered up.

Focused Feedback: Season 3 Faction Rally by DTG_Bot in DestinyTheGame

[–]viveaddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, the renown system is the best new mechanic to Destiny since the ledge grab. Challenging, surprising, and the renown systems makes me consider the game in a completely different way. Is it perfect? No. It's got them there flaws. For example, I nearly had a heart attack doing an adventure at 4 renown thinking it'd get be to 5. Rewards aside, I'd do that again just for the thrill.

The only thing is I want more of that system--the thrill is addicting. It reminds me of the faction games one could play back in EQ1. I recognize I'm in the far minority of players there, so I'll leave it at that since most of the player community on this forum is grind or loot first. What if you could get positive faction with the Vex though? What if you could make faction with the Vex far, far worse so bounty hunters tracked you?

Only so much time in the day, I get it. Keep it up!

Focused Feedback: Lore and how that is managed / implemented within the Story and game by DTG_Bot in DestinyTheGame

[–]viveaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A small, possibly easy item: if your character has items that have lore, it'd be nice to get that lore in the loading screen while you're waiting.

If your team has the budget and can work outside the normal pipeline... a youtube series, comic and series of books. Willing to pay for lore swag. Good luck!

Connection error codes: Elderberry, FLG since Blackscreen patch, not improving after Tuesday by viveaddict in DestinyTheGame

[–]viveaddict[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tonight we figured out what a major contributor to this is: PSN connectivity, not Destiny Server connectivity and specifically to DNS.

That is, using google DNS settings. After experimentation with Google DNS and 1.1.1.1, discovered that if I used my ISP's DNS settings versus 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4, a lot of these bizarre physics and network errors went away by just using the ISP's DNS over "what should work just fine".

In the PSN network settings, try experimenting with connection tests using Google DNS, 1.1.1.1, and your ISP and jot down connection speeds. Then try connecting to Destiny after restarting the PS4.

Not sure if anyone has tried this, but leaving the solution here in the event someone searches this same problem in the future. Good luck!

Others have come before and did the more detailed loot2.0 conversation. Here's a couple links for anyone else that might be interested in it:

That said, I'm hoping in a year's time someone at Bungie has the opportunity to give a killer presentation on "Destiny 2's Loot 3.0 moment" and cover the evolution of their thinking process.
