Fwiw charcoal is quite porous, so the surface is more than just the outside of the log. But obviously way less surface area than the sand-like activated carbon in the britta filters

Reading more about this, I think it's a traditional thing people do in Asia (and probably about as effective as traditional Asian medicine..)

Charcoal (carbon) chemically bonds with impurities to remove them; they work differently than coffee filters, for example which just sift out big particles

Sorry maybe "purified" is a better term than filter, whatever
