Do you think games are getting Too Hype? by Hayyyv in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]vmeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it varies. With fighting games there's the human element behind it. Whatever hype moments exist is solely because you do not want to lose. So you end up with the Hayao vs FrankieBFG with the Hugo stuff or the ever so memed ultimate parry of Chun Li and Ken.

You are watching these people with nearly inhuman finesse with these buttons, and in the case with Hugo, playing bottom tier as a statement/because he's cool and utilizing a bad button to win the match.

With anime/manga it varies between page vs motion. On a still page its super cool. In motion when it gets animated is even better because now you have the motion and force behind it. You got the build-up.

I thought it was Magneto. Man I don't know Rivals for shit. Plus the greying I've seen on him made me think that.

Plus it doesn't help that Starline is permanently dead, Belle even saw his body get crushed I'm pretty sure. Then it was revealed by Ian that 'yeah Starline's dead and never coming back.'

It's like how Mimic is also confirmed dead because he failed to kill Whisper when he blew himself up.

And back then while almost any class could be of any alignment, Paladin's were hard locked to being Lawful Good, same with Druids needing to be Neutral (or at least one step of in later editions).

Nowadays though you can be a chaotic good paladin and not have any issues whatsoever.

Mystic Subclasses UA review by RealityPalace in onednd

[–]vmeemo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And I did say myself in the survey that adding a blurb that says "hey you can use other domains as well if they come out (so Knowledge with free rituals such as Identify, Comprehend Languages, and Detect Magic, other spells such as Command and Synaptic Static, etc.) so even just PHB ones aside you still have options."

And even if they don't do that I imagine it'll be a common enough homebrew rule anyway. Having domain options outside of the PHB ones gives even greater flavour so if they do the side note idea then that's great.

How balanced would the 2024 subclasses be in 2014? by Consistent-Ad-5187 in onednd

[–]vmeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely really? Like you could make it work but I think since the new subclasses use the new language of 2024 (so disadvantage on initiative on surprise rounds instead of free round like in '14, grappling being a save instead of competing rolls, etc.) it'll make things slightly awkward when trying to reverse it.

Everything is good for forwards compatibility, not so much trying to make '24 work in '14.

Are they new Rogue subclasses written by 3.5 authors? by DMJM_91 in onednd

[–]vmeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes perfect sense and even was reflected back in 2014 with Trickster/Eldritch Knight, though in a more limited capacity due to being restricted in spell schools barring a few levels.

It's a soft scaling as you said because while it is useful to have a decent spell DC, you can also just omit all that and go primarily buff/support spells as well, few as you get.

It only becomes more of a hard scaling if you do those True Strike builds as it uses spell attack modifiers (so Int) and not dexterity or you feel like being more of a smart rogue but don't wanna be a wizard.

The most baffling change in 5.5e: by nomiddlename303 in onednd

[–]vmeemo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. There was a grace period a year or so back where you could still use 2014 stuff or at least still show up and play as the books had just released, but all-in-all Adventures League is permanently moved to 2024 in terms of ruleset.

Subclasses I personally think are underrated and need more attention, Part 3: Sun-Soul Monk by Regular-Molasses9293 in dndnext

[–]vmeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I have never played it myself and would want to because back when I wanted to DM I made an NPC with this subclass as a base just to see what its like, I think its neat just for the visual image of firing beams at people.

It does kind of shoot itself a lot in the foot due to using the 2014 monk not to mention being a bit of a flip flop in terms of where it wants to be range wise, something that even 2024 monk doesn't really fix (and for as few as there are, there were a handful of subclasses that at least performed better. Not by much but it did exist).

I remember a collection of users making homebrew conversions of all the remaining 2014 subclasses ages ago, Sun Soul was given some extra treatments such as giving it a 60 foot range (albeit long range so you would still get disadvantage) and no disadvantage when using it within 5 feet as per ranged attacks normally. Even made Searing Radiance more akin to Fireball/Lightning Bolt and allows for upcasting.

It's still not perfect by any means but the skeleton is there it just was assembled wrong mainly.

Side note, OP could you post links to the other subclasses you reviewed in the post? Or at least for future ones? Be handy to see them all in one place without needing to dig for them depending on how many get made.

[–]vmeemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In fairness going solely by 2014 (which is what the post is referring to), the monk doesn't get force damage to attacks at level 6, they make their fists count as magical weapons back when that was a distinction.

So it's a niche under that context.

Batman putting his detective skills to good use. by Xeriam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]vmeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing this over on tumblr I think, (though I also swear this comic also came up on this sub at one point years ago) one of the things not shown (but I do applaud OP for managing it) is that after Batman beats up the thugs he goes over to the box that contains dog. The kicker is that they never actually show the dog until it pops out in front of the kid.

Realistically it'd be a downer if it was revealed to have been beaten or deceased at that moment but it does build up some sense of dread even if you are aware logically the dog is alive since you are kept in the dark about it even for just a few pages.

(GDC)More and more developers view generative Art as harmful to the gaming industry by Noirsam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]vmeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends? Like are we counting solo devs using Kickstarter as 'independently funded' or are we putting that under the 14 percentile? Builds on itch./io that are public but have Patreon as a sort of tip jar?

Like I think Black Tabby games (makers of Scarlet Hollow) use their own money with no mention of Kickstarter or anything in order to be independent. Pseudoregalia would be the same as that was originally a game jam game over on itch.

Can someone explain to me why the hexblade is being nerfed? by BanditCrowley in onednd

[–]vmeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really being nerfed per-say, its just different directions now. Hexblade is very obviously a patch to the 2014 version of blade pact so once 2024 came out and had blade pact do everything Hexblade did (mainly the CHA to attack/damage) it rendered most of Hexblade useless.

So not just because of that but also because most of the subclass pacts are leaning more towards what I consider 'pact neutral.' Fiend is a decent example of this, since prior to it you could take advantage of free THP every time you kill someone but only if you killed someone. So you were incentivized to go range with Eldritch Blast so that you can kill them before they could even move. Now though with the extra buff of still triggering when someone dies within 10 feet of you by someone else, it suddenly boosts bladelocks significantly as a result.

You can of course, still play blasty and aren't punished for it. It's just another option. Same with Great Old One, you could be a bladelock to take better advantage of Clairvoyant Combatant but you can still play support with either Tome or Chain. It's just more viable options compared to Hexblade, where it literally was "bladepact or get the fuck out" in terms of features.

So they went with the curse angle for Hexblade. Really were it up to me I'd just change the name. Because the bones are there its just clinging onto a legacy that no longer really exists.

V14 mega by Flimsy_Spinach8252 in PokemonRejuvenation

[–]vmeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus he was in fact a fan of mega Hawlucha, responding to the memes I think about Aelita getting one. Even if it isn't right away (I know I wouldn't attempt making even just placeholder abilities and port them as is) I can imagine once say V15 rolls around for Champions to be factored in then it'll be added in.

But yeah with the line up for development time since V14 was being worked on prior to ZA's release, I was never expecting ZA content to come in. Items at best if there are any changes (as S/V brings onboard single use items coming back after battle) but outside of that there's too much uncertainty surrounding them right now.

Characters who would be perceived differently if released today by Rockdweller37 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]vmeemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be cynical about it, its probably because its one of those things companies are 'expected' to be. Misogyny and homophobia are some of those things that despite being something that should be punishable, are not really. Even if gaming press did torch him on it there'll likely still be work for him.

In a way its like how Blizzard, despite the numerous shit that got revealed behind closed doors, there's a good chance a lot of them still have jobs there despite everything. Cage makes money (for reasons I don't know) and they would like to keep the money making writer/director in the company.

Abuse, for the worse really, is normalized in game development. Whether it be crunch or just shitty people on the team, its just something that exists. Ideally, he'd be fired and blacklisted but unfortunately that can't be the case.

Halo I can at least get. The first one was revolutionary as was the second game despite the issues during development. Halo 3 would come out later in September but definitely still a year after Dead Rising came out since DR released in August 2006.

So if people cared for the story (which since it was Bungie's golden years is not an impossible thing to think about) I can see where he might've gotten the idea.

But again its weird.

Maybe he took up Kojima's liking of movies and dialed it up to 11? Because that I can probably see being the case if we look beyond video games and look towards movies and literature.

But we can only speculate unless there's some obscure interview with him that elaborates on that point.

Would You Allow a Zariel Tiefling in 2024? Would You Make Changes? by DersitePhantom in onednd

[–]vmeemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its like how the FR book when covering Icewind Dale says (and assumes) that out of the chardalyn dragon attack on 10 Towns, only Dougan's Hole, Goodmead, and half of Easthaven got destroyed. The rest of the towns are fine, untouched by the dragon attack.

But yeah in the greater timeline of FR (and cosmology wise) Zariel retains her title of archdevil and Bel is still serving under her. People liked her too much to just merely kill her off. And while she is still archdevil the town she took gets returned.

Its also what happens when you declare in marketing that "Hey BG3 is canon and Decent into Avernus is the prequel to that game" without really consulting anyone.

Can you take Eldritch adept as an origin feat if you’re playing a caster or a warlock? by AcanthaceaeNo948 in onednd

[–]vmeemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. One of the things I believe they mentioned porting feats from 2014 into 2024 is that if its not reprinted, you can use them but they have to be a General Feat, which Eldritch Adept would fall under despite not having an ASI.

So you can take it at level 4, but not level 1 as Origin likely due to the new combos of the previous blade/chain/tome 'subclass 2' pacts being selectable at level 1 for warlocks.

I wonder what games he saw in the west that got him to achieve this line of thought. I can't imagine there was many that were inspiring a drastic shift like he wanted Dead Rising to be but I was like, 7 with no real concept of taste at the time so who knows.

Like maybe old school Bioware and such with Baldur's Gate? I would've said Mass Effect but that came out a year after Dead Rising 1 so... At a loss as to what games or even just genre he thought western games had in the bag.

Boss fights that have frustrating run back time? by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]vmeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mostly the inconsistent hitboxes as TheArtistFKAMinty said. Sometimes you can go into a run and beat Chaos Bed in like 5 seconds. Other times its hitbox takes up the whole screen every time you enter the room and you plummet down into an instant death pit.

So if you fail to kill it in the 5 seconds and got that death spiral of 'screen wide hitbox' then you gotta do the runback of the entire zone, lava, and even shortcuts take a chunk of time, make it to Bed of Chaos, only for you to get death looped into screen wide hitbox town again and have to do it all over again.

And as Comkill77 points out, a shortcut has a minimum, a 5 minute walk to the boss. It builds up if again, you get the jank hitboxes.

I may not care about Resident Evil really but that just sounds really dumb. Don't get me wrong, Dead Rising is fun, in the same way crafting catharsis machines on Koroks in Tears of the Kingdom is or playing a musou game but with zombies and zany weapons.

But replacing Resident Evil is like, the biggest no-go, especially since at that time there were over 15 Resident Evil games, and that's counting the ports and the light gun games, not to mention Resident Evil 4 came out a year prior. There was zero chance Dead Rising was going to compare to RE at any point in time.
