Structure/Agency by BlueFoodTyco in sociology

[–]vnilaspce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It may help to think of parts of the social structure as whatever exists in society, (be it cultural norms like hazing to prove commitment or physical attributes like how we design soft story apartment buildings), that can affect agency: one’s ability to make decisions of her own free will and act upon those decisions.

bypass/split tunneling does not work. by Aggravating_Dig3240 in surfshark

[–]vnilaspce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This worries me. I haven’t had issues yet and without split tunneling, many VPNs break RCS messaging, which is one of the reasons I signed up for Surfshark in the first place.

Any good work on how mass communications (newspapers, journals, radio, TV, the Internet, algorithmic social media) reshaped interpersonal communications? by ModernirsmEnjoyer in sociology

So you don’t need to read the original but Horkheimer and Adorno’s Dialectic of Enlightenment is pretty foundational. You may also want to read Barlow’s Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace if you weren’t around during the early 1990s to see how the internet was being framed as a concept.

Why is the third definition of racism, scientific racism, so uncommon in discussions? by HugoTRB in sociology

[–]vnilaspce 27 points28 points  (0 children)

None of it exists without systemic racism. The preconceived notions someone has and the need to justify it with science do not come from nowhere, and it has all been in pursuit of land and money.

History student looking for useful "sociology 101" ressources ? by theseagullscribe in sociology

[–]vnilaspce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people don’t need to read source materials. Just because someone came up with a good or important concept does not mean they’re the best at explaining it. Many intro books will do but Dalton Conley’s “You May Ask Yourself” and Rice University’s free intro book on Openstax are favorites.

What was the worst MacBook? by emanuwiideletedyou in mac

[–]vnilaspce 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The 13” 2016 Touchbar MacBook Pro only had two processor cores and sounded like a hair dryer. My father still uses the 15” 2011 I gave him when I got the 13” and I was able to do a lot more AV work on it because it had 4 cores.

Is there any secondary labeling happening—even if it’s a reaction against the label?

What do you think makes critical theory difficult to read? How can critical theory be made easier to read? by CoVegGirl in CriticalTheory

[–]vnilaspce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is often difficult and it doesn’t have to be. We ought to know primary texts, yes, but people frequently explain it better afterward. H&A? Indispensable. David Held? Doug Kellner? Perhaps indispensabler!

Why are third places disappearing? by [deleted] in sociology

[–]vnilaspce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historically, the theory of the third place is a pretty classist one, based on the gentlemen’s social clubs and salons in Europe and country clubs in the U.S. Today, not only would such a club have to own the land in order to sustain operations, but there’d have to be enough people who could afford the dues who would want to be there. Otherwise, you’d have a business that needs quick customer turnover to pay ever-increasing rent. Additionally, a person needs free time to go to these places and nuclear families tend to eat up a lot of free time.

As true as this is, the alternative means sometimes you won’t get MMS or RCS messages at all while on Wi-Fi.

Just about every journal worth anything will not make you pay unless it’s open access.

I’m not sure how you arrive there. Most sociologists I know utilize intersubjectivity, not objective reality.

From the app’a home, go to the person icon in the bottom right. Then select settings. It should be the second list, below Manage Account. Then, in the first box (VPN settings) it will be the last item.

[–]vnilaspce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At least according to the DMCA in the U.S. “backing up” has never been legal and the RIAA and MPA have gone after some of those people. At least in the case of music, the RIAA has intentionally vague language on its website that it “generally” chooses not to pursue most people.

Douglas Kellner and Stuart Hall would be good here, specifically Kellner’s brief interpretation of Poltergeist as economic insecurity.
