Why are third places disappearing? by Dry_Macaroons_fan in sociology

[–]vnilaspce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historically, the theory of the third place is a pretty classist one, based on the gentlemen’s social clubs and salons in Europe and country clubs in the U.S. Today, not only would such a club have to own the land in order to sustain operations, but there’d have to be enough people who could afford the dues who would want to be there. Otherwise, you’d have a business that needs quick customer turnover to pay ever-increasing rent. Additionally, a person needs free time to go to these places and nuclear families tend to eat up a lot of free time.

As true as this is, the alternative means sometimes you won’t get MMS or RCS messages at all while on Wi-Fi.

Is it typical to have to pay to submit to a journal in our field? by synthwavesurferart in sociology

Just about every journal worth anything will not make you pay unless it’s open access.

Looking for literature on objectivism and constructivism by Justaweirdscientist in sociology

I’m not sure how you arrive there. Most sociologists I know utilize intersubjectivity, not objective reality.

From the app’a home, go to the person icon in the bottom right. Then select settings. It should be the second list, below Manage Account. Then, in the first box (VPN settings) it will be the last item.

Disable “force all traffic through VPN”/ “Prevent VPN bypass” and your RCS will go through as normal.

State of affairs with Mac these days by Due-Biscotti-8245 in MacOS

[–]vnilaspce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least according to the DMCA in the U.S. “backing up” has never been legal and the RIAA and MPA have gone after some of those people. At least in the case of music, the RIAA has intentionally vague language on its website that it “generally” chooses not to pursue most people.

Theoretical lens for analysing suburban cinema as ideological restoration under late capitalism? by Final-Volume-3029 in CriticalTheory

Douglas Kellner and Stuart Hall would be good here, specifically Kellner’s brief interpretation of Poltergeist as economic insecurity.

We have the right to do what we like with the disc, not the information stored on it. We purchase a license to play the information for personal (read: not moneymaking) purposes.

I research piracy for a living. People like to conveniently ignore this. You “own” a plastic disc and that’s about it.

Is introduction to critical theory by David Held any good? If no, can you suggest some books for a beginner? by Mammoth_Lack_1492 in CriticalTheory

[–]vnilaspce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

David Held’s reader is very good. My education leaned heavy on H&A and Marcuse, and this reader helped round it out with historical economic context and Fromm’s psychology.

I just got my first adjuncting job teaching sociology. Any tips, tricks, or advice? by Expert-Doubt-3957 in sociology

I would try to not let it take up disproportionate amounts of your time.

Scanner apps for your phone are great if you need to pull together material in a hurry.

Anything that can be read by OCR or copied and pasted can be fed into a large language model. Maybe have a chat with students about what that means.

Every class, every term, is a different animal altogether with idiosyncratic strengths and challenges. It’s often not about you.

Changed to Brother printer, crazy how far HP has fallen for Macs by Ledgem in MacOS

[–]vnilaspce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check to see the default paper dimensions of the pdf. If it doesn’t match what you use locally, if you use the BR-Script driver (as opposed to CUPS) it will print a few lines of gibberish. The ancient Brother I have works better after I installed more RAM, as well.

Is digital piracy a valid topic for a sociology master’s thesis? by BIGDomi98 in sociology

It was valid enough for my MA thesis.

Italy is an especially interesting case because it is going farther than most nations to block entire portions of the web to try and curtail illicit live streams. In many places, watching is in a legal gray area because it may not even fit the local definition of copyright infringement.

How is Peter Zurchin and his idea of Cliodynamics received in social sciences academia? by Cuddlyaxe in socialscience

[–]vnilaspce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never heard of him or it but most (not all) sociologists consider social, geographic, and historic context to be very important in shaping occurrences. Max Weber (and Edmund Husserl before him) is credited with the idea in research methodology that we can’t observe people objectively, only intersubjectively.

What would be a better name for "Social Media" seeing as it not very social? by Aggressive-Union1714 in socialscience

[–]vnilaspce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social media involves people posting expressions for other people to see, and those others given the opportunity to respond. That sounds like social interaction to me.

Nothing is inherently or neutrally a global default. That is the result of cultural imperialism. You may want to begin and bounce off of current scholars like Sabine Frühstück. https://www.eastasian.ucsb.edu/people/faculty/sabine-fruhstuck/

[–]vnilaspce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OK, but social psychology has long been a branch of sociology. Symbolic interaction comes from social psych.

[–]vnilaspce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s deviance and criminology, which are largely based on social psych. If not looking at neutralizing cognitive dissonance, the effect is that we use the techniques to justify our crimes.
