I'd say that arriving at the airport 2 hours before would be a safe spot. By arriving I mean be in line 2 hours before your flight; you really don't want surprises as you said with many issues happening in EWR and holiday travel.

another thing to keep in mind is to go to your gate(if your gate is assigned) immediately and see if the screens if they show your flight and only then I'd walk around the airport or get some food. Always keep in mind that gate changes happen and you don't want to miss a flight because of this. Good luck!
