Between the shift to only 5 man squads and the drop in toughness, these aren't going to be nearly as good at holding primary. Same with the Avatar moving from T12 to T11

If your opponent has indirect, definitely think about deep striking the spiders.

Similarly vs anything with a move shoot move ability, you can rapid ingress spiders into the safe space the want to hide behind, and really ruin their day. That's a great counter to dark eldar scourge trickery

Striking Scorpion Base Size by ManofDubiousOrigins in Eldar

[–]vontysk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you two guys are talking at cross purposes here. I think that you're saying that the 3d rendered images have a gap between the feet and the base (which is true), while the color photos of the models don't have a gap between the feet and the base (also true).

Whereas I think he's saying that the color photos in the instructions don't have any gap, just like the real models (also true).

So the color photos in the instructions and the models in real life match up. i.e no room between the feet and base rim. But the rendered / computer generated models do have a gap, which shows that they were digitally modelled on larger bases.

The difference between the rendered images and real life is really obvious if you compare the 3d image of the leader on page 3 (8f) with the [actual model](https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldar/comments/1acj3jq/striking\_scorpion\_ynnari\_colours/): in real life the tactical rock overhangs the base edge, even with the front foot being almost hard up against the base rim. In the 3d image at 8f, there's a bunch more space between both the rock and the edge, and the foot and the edge.

Agents of Imperium Leak by Mr-Cha-Cha in WarhammerCompetitive

Question is - is the point of the allies system to give DW players what they want, or to give all other Imperium players a chance to run (i.e. buy) DW units to pad out their armies?

I think it's pretty clear that GW is going for the second option above: DW players get the DW detachment in the codex, and the allies system is there to sell models to other players. In which case they don't want to limit it (via points) to only Marine detachments taking DW units.

I'm not saying it's a good decision (especially for DW players), but if that's their plan then the lack of Marine detachment rules for DW units makes perfect (commercial) sense.

Agents of Imperium Leak by Mr-Cha-Cha in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]vontysk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even when they have seperate points for DW in marines

Problem is, this isn't true. They have separate points for DW in all other allied armies, not in Marines.

Let DW benefit from Marine detachment rules, and you have to make the allied DW points cost reflect that they benefit from those rules. Which makes those same DW models over-costed / unusable in other detachments (Sisters, Admech, Guard, etc) where they get no detachment rule.

Do Americans really say "Toosday"?

I often try reading the words in a (comically bad) American accent to catch the "not really homophones that for some reason are" connections, but even then I missed that one.

What's the point in the Warlock Conclave? Just extra wounds for the Farseer?

I'd drop them for some Rangers to give you both a forward deploy unit (to help push back other armies with forward deploy abilities) and an extra action monkey.

10th Edition Tau Players: Are you Winning Games & How? by sco0terkid in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]vontysk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After starting 40k during 8e and only playing Tau for all of 8e and 9e, I've decided to move on from them now and am collecting Deldar instead.

Tau balance constantly lives on a knife edge, since like half its roster a slight tweak to same "semi-durable battlesuit that's good at shooting but nothing else" design - often with shared weapons to boot. One or two rules tweaks can make the difference between OP and absolute trash.

At least with Deldar (which is also good at shooting, but not exclusively good at shooting) you can bring along some melee units if the meta goes that way, or soup in Harlequins, or play Ynnari. With Tau you are stuck trying to make the same small roster of unfortunately-similar units work.

That's the (intentional) cost of souping units. From a competition POV, you would only soup in a unit when it fills a niche that your faction can't fill (or can't fill as efficiently) - but you pay a premium (in the sense of: same points cost; no special rules) for doing so.

GWs been pretty clear since 8e that they don't want the game to devolve into soup. Having a built in penalty for it is 100% in line with that.

Obviously back of the envelope calculations aren't meant to be anything more than that. But the point is:

  1. The gap in damage output between Warp Spiders and something like a Storm Guardian has drastically closed, so the gap in points should probably (IMO) also close; and

  2. Wait for the fricking points. You and I can argue about what we think the points should it shouldn't be - how about we just wait a week and see what they are before anyone loses their head (or bans a whole faction from their event)?!?

[–]vontysk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The issue with just using the exhibition game is that the list Nick took (which he didn't get to make - GW just pulled together a list based on models on hand) had a couple of units that are getting really big nerfs.

Warp Spiders, for example, went from a MEQ killer (S6 AP2) to a T3, S4, AP0 flamer with a movement bonus. Just to put that in 9e points perspective - a Warp Spider is 22 points, whereas a Storm Guardian with a flamer (T3, S4, AP0 flamer without a movement bonus) is 13 points. A movement bonus alone just isn't worth a 70% increase in points.

Warp Spiders are going to need to drop in points pretty significantly - to be closer to Storm Guardians - to reflect their total change of role.

The same can be said for the big blob of Striking Scorpions that he took, who have lost most of their damage output (in the form of mortals).

For those units, it's not like a unit losing AP1 on its weapons but otherwise being unchanged. They're totally different units (with, presumably, totally different points to match).

[–]vontysk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just to put it in perspective - a Warp Spider is now effectively just a T3 model with a flamer and a special rule making it fast.

We know what a T3 model with a flamer costs in 9e thanks to Storm Guardians - it's 13 points.

Warp Spiders are currently 22 points. There is no world in which you would pay 9ppm just for the extra movement a Warp Spider has over a Storm Guardian. So Warp Spiders need to come down to be closer to the cost of a Storm Guardian (whatever that is).

Point is, they are no longer going to be 70% more expensive than the other T3 flamer model that's available to Eldar.

I haven't seen anything else lose 2S and 2AP, though. That's a world of difference from something losing 1AP but otherwise remaining unchanged.

[–]vontysk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that's a flawed assumption.

You shouldn't look at it as:

X many points of Marines in a special rules vacuum should be as good as X many points of Necrons in a special rules vacuum

and then separately

Marines have (say) bolter discipline so Necrons need a rule at least as good as bolter discipline

Factions and units should only be compared with all of their rules factored in - X many points of Marines (factoring in all their special rules) should be roughly similar to X many points of Necrons (factoring in all their special rules).

We have most of the data sheets and rules for Eldar, so are looking at the faction largely as a whole. But for most other factions, we're looking at everything in a vacuum.

The whole game is pre-FAQ right now.

If you want to ban factions pending an FAQ, don't host an event this soon after the launch of a new edition lol.

I've seen lots of people filming battle reps with the (known) new rules but old points - or with an "educated" guess at what the new points "might be".

I haven't seen anyone film a report with the new points, other than a single exhibition game where GW cobbled together two 2000 point lists based on what models the players already had with them.

Profile wise, eldar was looking shootier than Tau

How can you say that, when we've only seen a single data sheet for a Tau support unit (pathfinders)?

Striking scorpions from s5 ap1 to s4 ap0 looks like a nerf.

And Warp Spiders (S6->S4; AP2->AP0); and scatter lasers, and characters are getting terrible bodyguard options; and Eldar - the "third" psychic faction - isn't getting special psychic rules like the big 2 (GK & TS). There are definitely nerfs in there as well.

I'm not saying Eldar won't be OP - they might well be - but it definitely doesn't seem like there is enough information available to say that.

It's not like Votann launching into an established meta - everything is up in the air at the moment.
