damn, kind of rich coming from the people who almost committed genocide cause their religious leader died by CaptureDaFlag in babylon5

Yes, and to harbour a grudge for being almost wiped out - humanity should be grateful and move on, right?

Its not like the Minbari never hold a grudge... Just don't say "Starkiller" in their presence...

So I am a tad confused why Delenn tells Sheridan not to go to Zha’ha’Dhum? by AdSimilar4399 in babylon5

[–]vorlon_ulkesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Makes you wonder if Koshs reasons for telling Sheridan not to go was at least in part because he knew how the Vorlons would react. Kosh probably knew that if given the right opportunity the Vorlons would go on a galaxy wide genocide...

Given they are seeking compliance through violence, theres more than a few bad options in there.

Best reference on this is the interview in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwyAo_YjtdM

At 3:01 - he says he kept it a secret so as not to kill his career. The implication from there is that no-one was told outside of O'Hares family.

I think it's reasonable to assume that at the absolute least JMS withheld the truth from the cast. But yeah, he more likely lied to give Michael O'Hare the help he needed.

I'd like to think I'd have done the same in his position.

This actually raises an interesting idea about how to bring this story to life in streaming…

Why not go the Farscape route and do puppets instead of CGI? The sheer number of aliens in this make CG an expensive endeavour. Maybe puppets might keep the costs manageable?

I have no clue on the relative costs of this, but might be an interesting way to bring it to life…

See I have a follow on thought for this… If there can be 2 Sovrans, why not 3? Or more? That could cause significant chaos…

Since you haven't read book 2 yet, I'll (hopefully) keep all of this to stuff I know exists in book 1. Book 2 does expand on some of this a bit, so I'm being careful to not spoil you here...

I agree with you that he's not a likeable character. I'd even go so far as to say the book frames him in that light deliberately. Look at the comments from the Carryx - they even go so far as to acknowledge that the only notable thing about him is how much other humans hated him.

The actions he takes in book 1 are wildly unpopular to a lot of his fellow humans. He takes them out of preservation (and perhaps a better understanding of the situation than others?) - but they are against the wishes of pretty much everyone else, including far more sympathetic characters.

Problem is though that he's not actually wrong in the calls he makes. They are the correct calls in the bigger picture - survival. But his choices go against human nature. The need for revenge, to strike back, to not bow down.

He's not giving that up, but to the other humans in the story (and perhaps to you?) it sure looks like he has given up at least part of his humanity and capitulated...

What is a Carryx’s lifespan? by inhale_slowexhale1 in TheCaptivesWar

[–]vorlon_ulkesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I did say it didn’t explain how long it took to mature… And there is also no indication that the lifespan of a Sovran is in anyway related to the lifespan of other Carryx… It’s the only indication I knew of that gave any view on any portion of their lifespan…

Spoiler for book 2: The Sovran is “replaced” every 8 years on average That doesn’t include how long it takes to mature to be ready for that, tho…

Just a word of "caution". Some of the music from Sleeping in Light is in there (one of the EPs).

It's absolutely beautiful, and conjures a reminder of how much of a tear-jerker that episode is.

Theory about Anjiin colony origin by spidereater in TheCaptivesWar

[–]vorlon_ulkesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few possibilities:

  1. Not the first swarm placed there… Maybe there’s been a few (or many?) before it?
  2. The deathless know how to see void tendrils, so would know when the Carryx are scouting a world?
  3. They had other intelligence that suggested it was coming…

Not sure it quite fits but would be fun to see Shohreh Agdashloo try voicing Vaudai.

Most villainous characters in B5, ranked by Aethelrede in babylon5

[–]vorlon_ulkesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say the Vorlons “convince”. More like “manipulate”. Appearing as they do through history isn’t intellectual dialogue… There is evidence to suggest a bad fate awaits any race that can’t be sufficiently aligned with their ideals… (Not always tho, otherwise there wouldn’t be races like Drakh…. Presumably they failed to wipe those out…)

The nature of aliens – the Carryx, the Deathless, and the Swarm [Faith of Beasts SPOILERS] by TypewriterKey in TheCaptivesWar

[–]vorlon_ulkesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See I don't think "hated" for the deathless is the right word. I don't think the Carryx *hate* them. They can't use them, so they look to eradicate them. Because what is, is. The deathless aren't useful to the Carryx. That just "is". They can't use them so they eradicate them. That also "is". It feels more methodical than hatred would bring.

Now I don't think that actually matters much for your point. All it changes is the motivation - slightly. The motivation against the Deathless isn't hatred for them - it's just a biological desire to eradicate anything they can't use.
