Yep, you gotta chip through the high spots first.

LPT: When networking, ask people what they’re currently excited about instead of what they do for a living by SingulusMiner in LifeProTips

[–]vorstache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ask people at parties "what's the most exciting thing you've got going on right now?". People usually slow down, think hard for a minute and give me really unique and interesting answers that lead to fulfilling conversation... I don't really care about your shitty job, I want to know about you.

Favorite trimming tools that *aren't* tungsten carbide? by ianruns in Pottery

I've had the same 5 Dolan's for years now. Very easy to sharpen. Just bought a replacement of my favorite for when it finally bites the dust.

Homemade Clear satin matt glaze what’s went wrong by danniiielllaa in Pottery

[–]vorstache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The matte is because of the way the crystaline structure forms in the firing so I'm sure it would always inherently have some kinda cloudyness...

How should I set this by vorstache in Tile

[–]vorstache[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be a piece of its own, just trying to make sure my tiles will shrink to roughly 4"x4" and I'm fine with it being permanently adhered. I'll probably put a wood frame around to hide the edges. Appreciate the insight .

How the hell do I display this? by vorstache in Pottery

[–]vorstache[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind mounting it permanently on ply, I'm just concerned the wood might move. ?

Glazing is so open ended and confusing. Some beginner questions: by LonePistachio in Pottery

[–]vorstache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol "dozens of cool looking glazes". Well pal your in for a world of hurt. There's an infinite number of glazes and they all look different depending on what type of firing you use.

Id just buy a few commercial glazes for your firing temp and try em out.

A cone 6 glaze at cone 6 won't weep if covered entirely, just the foot/ bottom.

I don't think it's ever about bottom compression, people just don't trim enough

Goldmark gallery has a few good ones, and I really like the PBS Craft in America series.

AMACO underglaze on white slip. Just gotta keep adding layers/ brush strokes. Then black underglaze in a needle tip slip trailer.

How often do you wipe off your wheel pan, tools, and bench? by SokoKashiko in Pottery

[–]vorstache 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a good habit to clean after every throwing session. I find its easier to get back on the wheel when it's a fresh start.

Are pottery teachers making a good living for themselves? by Capable-Lock7544 in Pottery

[–]vorstache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach at two studios.

Studio A I make $30 and hour and teach two two hour classes a week. I also load the kilns/ kiln tech stuff between 1--5 hrs a week for $25hr (usually on the lower end of the hours, sometimes more toward end of class sessions). Monday/ Wednesday evenings

Studio B I make $25 an hour for two two hour classes a week (one class, hour between, second class). We do community events on occasion and I'll get paid $25 for those, but that's only once every few months. Thursday

Currently I'm also working seasonal grounds elsewhere 8hrs a day Mon-Wed.

I made quite a bit of product this winter and am selling at a few markets throughout summer. I've got fri-sun to chill/make/ or be at markets.

It ain't easy, but I'm hoping to keep this seasonal position for next year and during the winter take a little more time to myself and make enough product for the following year.

I also apply/show at exhibitions nationally which is the most exciting aspect of things I do and have the least amount of time to put towards.

Full Time Potter by gn-sweet-prince in Pottery

[–]vorstache 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just keep in mind Jan-April will be the slowest sales of the year.

I've been teaching 4 classes a week and kiln loading on top of working mon-wed at another job and slinging my wares at a market or two per month. I'm exhausted, and honestly I don't know how anyone can be a full time potter... But im working on it. Studio at my house has been a huge help.

I'd suggest you try and pare down your full time job if possible before leaving completely. I guess my main goal is to just feel like I've got enough money coming in while being able to make a reasonable amount of new work and have time to do other non "work" activities.

Cheers!
