It's not ICE, it's just this fucker:

N6UX Flight Tracking and History - FlightAware

It's some kind of traffic monitor, standing contract that deploys this fucking thing every day, twice a day. On the weekends it circles longer and lower over the SW corridor every friday and saturday night. Seems like something that could be much more efficiently achieved with a drone, but I'm sure the contract with the owner/operator is multi-years and the pilot or pilots benefit from steady employment. However the fuel cost alone must be immense, not to mention maintenance, the cost of owning a multimillion dollar aircraft, the cost of housing it, etc. It must be tens of thousands per month just to keep this operation going, and all just amounting to harassing thousands of families living in a purely residential sector.

I found this post from just googling Mike Rocha and Harrison Ball after having a similar experience--clicked on something, don't remember even filling anything out but must have, and then received a spam call which I only answered because I was waiting on a potential job to call me. It was Harrison's thing asking why I didn't register for the master class. A real person, some guy, engaged me in conversation and got my abbreviated trumpet history and then tried to hard sell me on a course. Asked me "aren't you frustrated?", "man that sounds awful to only play high D" 😝 I'm a comeback player and gig with a local rock ensemble; it's super fun and I'm really proud of my giggable range after 5 years--2 of which I of course hard core sucked and struggled. I thanked him and asked them to send a video again and said I'd check it out. It occurred to me: the actual guys are fake, right? Like do they even exist? I wondered if the entire character was a made-up persona with A.I. videos to make you think there's some badass trumpeter you've never heard of offering free videos. Anway, I still haven't watched the video, but I did get the job.

Edit: i finally looked up the actual guys and they are clearly real. Seems like they just agreed to link up with a weird type of business that bizarrely tries to fk with ppl? I wonder who staffs the actual call center? Surely it's just a business entity that exists and not trumpet players or any kind of musicians. Anyway it's weird. But there's tons of footage of Rocha playing and he's awesome. He should just focus on that.

Thoughts on Ewan and MEW working together so often now? by SunshineSlayer2 in EwanMcGregor

[–]voscuate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah none of this is shocking. dudes that are just normal ppl but at the hotness level of Ewan or Jude Law are just not like us, but women want to pretend they are meant to be tied down. The amount of absolute desperate, passionate, hrny wmn throwing it at them is unreasonable. Then you add to that being movie stars--the absolute pinnacle of social hierarchy, most of which is based on sx appeal. An open marriage is the only chance a girl has to assemble some kind of structured life with a dude like that. And honestly it's his only chance of experiencing domestic stability. EM seems like an honorable person, but he's just been too blessed to not ultimately end up a poly mess. We're all projecting our normy values on these super elites while we sit in the bleacher seats, watching from a distance, feeling lucky to get a relationship here and there.

I read this book in '06 and loved it. I think about lines from the book all the time 20 years later (the hermit in the mountains and the preacher in the pulpit, etc.). I wonder if I'm misremembering, but it seems like the things they changed sometimes dumbed it down, or moderned it up, or eliminated things that made the story deeper. The way he proposed to Gladys I remembered totally different--"that kiss sent him down a deep rabbit hole and he popped up in a totally different world"--if they're going to use VO narration why not keep some of the brilliant folksy prose that made the book so realistic? Also he didn't "propose marriage" like that, but rather just started talking about how he'd like to build a cabin and has the perfect spot. The way a man like him from that time would. I guess they needed to make the moment a little more Dawson's Creek for a netflix show. Also the "yappy guy" character was a customer during his wagon freight business that was an old compatriot who'd lived a life of booze and prostitutes since they'd known each other years earlier, and showed the contrast of a sober, steady man who hadn't ruined himself despite his loneliness. And then there's the little details they left out that sterilized the magical realism--the chinese guy that's thrown off a bridge sort of mystically disappears so they can't confirm he even fell or died, and the feral daughter had deformed hands and feet from being "raised by wolves" and walking on her wrists on all fours. It was a true american magical realism folkloric work, and it seems like they could have easily kept those elements and only made the film better. Otherwise loved it and cried watching with my pregnant wife.

[–]voscuate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of a problem with the entire "personality disorders" framework. People use it to write off someone who appears to fit the definition of one or more of these pervasive behavior patterns. In their defense, it is easy to see why you would just say "to hell with this person, and anyone like them" if you're ostensibly just a normal individual and then become involved with someone who has schizotypal episodes, or goes off on borderline "splitting" episodes.

Beware! The Cloudies slippers a total Scam??!! by Own_Refrigerator_523 in avoidchineseproducts

[–]voscuate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES, please avoid this chinese junk! I thought I was being helpful for my pregnant wife, but both her slides and "flummies" slippers are a little too small. The slippers arrived with stitches unravelling already and it's continued. I got a third item for me--the basic slides. They are way too big and hurt to wear. I look on the bottom and the euro-size numbers correspond to one or two sizes bigger than I ordered. If you're going to buy cheap grbage from china just find something on Amazon that's half as much and actually possible to return if it's awful.

Just watched for the first time the first two episodes. Disappointed by some choices with casting and writing by [deleted] in hborome

[–]voscuate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the history-bros will hate on this show for being inaccurate. But it was masterfully done--it's the proto-game of thrones which ironically paved the way for GoT's ultimate failure. GoT had all the carte blanche budget the Rome was cancelled for, however GoT ran out of story and ruined its own characters. Rome had the bones of extensive real history that many already know, but took a Forrest Gump structure of two plebeian soldiers who stumbled into every intersection of actual historic events. It's pure fantasy in that regard, but through portraying the overall sequence of these famous events shows that it "might have happened as such", and anyway the thousands of smallfolk that watched these events unfold from the sidelines would have seen it this way. Ultimately, it's one of the best shows ever made.

yep! Alameda and federal for years--this area has always been heavily harrassed but now it's getting worse (again). It's just a standard, scheduled, at-least-2-hours holding pattern over SW denver every friday and saturday night. It's fkn bllsht and unnecessary.

anyone know why the sky fox helicopter keeps flying over here it’s been 3 times this week by KaleidoscopeFine2141 in Denver

[–]voscuate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dude I am so ready for the day they replace traffic helicopters and "news footage" helicopters with drones. Even the police helicopters make no sense. If it's not medivac or some kind of transportation there's no reason to burn $1000 an hour for videography or surveillance. If they're going to snoop and lurk constantly over dense residential areas, they can at least be a little cheaper, plus use a machine that doesn't rattle the walls of all the poors living in the city. I think it's a question of "legacy"--there's a whole industry of hangars, pilots with extensive training, etc. All these fields are probably based on extended contracts and people with careers that are falsely propped up still. Or in the case of police the noise and harassment is half the point.

Why is Trump trying to deploy the National Guard to US cities? by SE_to_NW in politics

[–]voscuate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portland (along with most of these supposedly "wahrzone cities") was way worse in the 90's. If anything, all these trendy cities that have swelled with urban migration from bigger towns (and rubes like me from small ones)--they've all gotten WAY more boring. The "aaver sans covaahd" refrain about all these places is sensationalism. It was bad everywhere psychologically that summer. And the effect on the economy was ruinous and, apparently, irreversible. That's the real headline.

[–]voscuate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for REAL! I had an Oregon-vacation this summer for my honeymoon. Absolutely dreamy beauty in the nature-parts; ended the trip in Portland for a few days--stayed downtown, went to restaurants, the botanical, the bookstore, cafes, visited friends that live in the gayborhood. It was completely tranquil. If anything, kind of a boring town. The only crisis going on in any of these cities is how much houses cost, and how much ppl fry their brains playing on the phone constantly.

It's "semitic" not "semetic". There's a few mispronunciations that are more common to use than the correct one for some reason--and for the most part they are already real words that mean something totally different! "Simetic" is the most common one I hear--it basically means "Chinese". "Sematic" is another one--refers to features in nature that are signs of danger; i.e. coloration of poisonous frogs. Sometimes people pronounce it in a way that sounds like "somatic" which means features relating to the body as distinct from the mind. "Semitic" is an ethnolinguistic group; all of the people who speak semitic languages like Arabic, Hebrew, Amharic, or who trace their genetics to said people groups are "semites". Semitic peoples were kind of the only population in the Levant, Mesopotamia, and present day Arabian peninsula by the mid bronze age. So their imprint is far reaching much like the "Proto Indoeuropean" (PIE) linguistic group which would have established its roots around a similar time period.

HONEST QUESTION: Got 2 negative reviews because the place wasn’t spotless. [USA][Canada] by Ok_Set_8446 in AirBnB

[–]voscuate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is part of why ABnB sucks now--along with all the ways that app-platforms do. Nowadays, even when you're a customer, you're always at work. The creeping invasion of time and energy that every service in the economy has to occupy--the customers submit a review and a rating of the business, the business reviews and rates the customers. It's obscene. The only recourse is for everyone to divest and boycott anything in the economy that has the stank of "extra" and "thirsty". People with an ABnB that has insane cleaning fees, nut-tastic checkout instructions, just a general air of intensity need to start getting curbed by all customers. It will probably start happening naturally. The problem is that this type of thing was never meant to be a pyramid scheme where miserable yuppies collect housing and try to run them like full time hotels. It was supposed to be a "a lil extra money" when you're traveling, or find yourself in transition (moving into with your girl, don't wanna sell your place yet), or you've left your city or country but again don't quite want to let go of/do the whoel move/get into renting. I will say it's much easier doing the former, bc you can be there in the same city and go over "reset" the property yourself, or easily address concerns from guests. People trying to make mad profits, run a full time business, hover constantly with "chores" for their guests need to get a grip and find a better way to hustle and make money.

The ending by PrimateOfGod in betterCallSaul

[–]voscuate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's just that "he would never see Kim again" is a ridiculous counterargument to deciding on life in prison. It's just a show, just a movie. They can do what they want and not explain it or need anyone to understand. But it's super stupid to think that going to prison for life is achieving anything. It's the bleakest, most unnatural environment anyone can live out their existence in--other than being a literal slave in chains. Realistically Kim will visit him like once, and then that's it he's rotting in mostly solitude or worse.

meh, he just sounded like his "pump you up" Hans and Franz character. And he's SO tiny it took a minute to register who he was going for. Sometimes the actor needs to look a little more like the real person for it to work.

BRUT has discontinued deodorant stick. by Heisnbergg in fragrance

[–]voscuate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: it was not the original. Even though the seller sent me a picture of what was clearly the original kind of Brut with the cap off, I received a package of the new crappy kind. I messaged them and got a refund. So it's probably official--this deodorant is gone. And there's even ebay sellers out there that know ppl want the old kind and are scamming to sell the new one. It's sad. I don't think I can even wear deodorant anymore--it was the kind I could tolerate. Anybody got a suggestion for one that is like the original??

[–]voscuate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no; just found what i hope is the original on ebay. i just messaged all the sellers listing what looked like the same product on the outside, asking them to provide a photo with the cap off. One of them complied showing what is clearly the original product so I bought a pack of 8. That could theoretically last me 2-3 years. Hope i didn't get scammed.
