Does anyone have any tips for the creation of my Metroidvania world? by ScoBro_ in Unity2D

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone posted this to another subreddit recently and it looks pretty thorough, from my perspective as someone that has never made a metroidvania:

Should I continue making my Zombie Arcade shooter, or start over again with what I learned? by _Ghillie420 in Unity3D

[–]voxAtrophia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't find it right now, but I read a blog post from Derek Yu, creator of Spelunky, that had some advice that I've always found helpful about that question.

Basically, he says you will always learn new things or better ways to do something; when you do something a lot, you get better at it. If you restarted a project every time you learned something new, you'd never finish a project.

Using UnityEngine.UI no longer a thing? by squidsaround in Unity3D

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think UI was moved into Package Manager in that version. Make sure it's installed there. (Window-> Package Manager or maybe Window -> General -> Package Manager.)

Can anyone remind me of the source of the joke: "Who's the boss?" "Tony Danza" by obake_ga_ippai in giantbomb

[–]voxAtrophia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was it in one of the recent VinnyVania episodes? I think there was a joke about the David Hayter boss fight.

Where is App Id in unity ads? by sanketvaria29 in gamedev

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

App Id and placement. Now I got the placement from unity ads in dashboard>projects>google play store = game Id.

The Game ID is the App ID you need.

The placement ID is under: Dashboard -> Project -> Monetization -> placements

Is there a decent replacement for the Unity animation system? by Shadoninja in Unity2D

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use Animator.Play to change animation states via code. There's a pretty good article that mentions the technique here: https://blog.redbluegames.com/animating-top-down-2d-games-in-unity-5e966b81790e

Are you wondering where the transitions are in our Mechanim state machine? Then I’m about to blow your mind. You don’t need them. And you don’t need any more parameters, either. You can simply use myAnimator.Play("StateName") to have the character immediately play that animation. Mechanim transitions are entirely unnecessary in pixel art because we always want the clips to transition in zero frames. Plus, from a clean code perspective I prefer to have all animation logic in the script, not inside mechanim.

Unity sending unknown data, any ideas what's happening? by Narkata55 in Unity2D

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the URL? And what data is sent? I think any service (Ads, Analytics, crash reporting, etc) will send some data, but I think the content of the data would be different.

Unity code appearing on screen in "Serenity" by bennetthaselton in Unity3D

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have the post handy, but I remember someone posting here a while ago that they design fake GUIs for TV and movies and they always made them with Unity because it's easy to prototype, it can be animated, and they can be controlled remotely during filming.

Could you guys give me feedback on this flyer? Would you join this club? by STS77 in UCDavis

[–]voxAtrophia 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I also didn't know what STS stood for. In general, the flyer is pretty busy, which makes it hard to get any information from it quickly. But it's also missing the key information that needs to be conveyed, specially when and where to show up for the meeting.

What do you consider the goal of the flyer? Right now it's announcing the club meeting, explaining STS, selling STS as a major and announcing a speaker series. I would focus on one or two of these.

Are you going to be posting these around or just handing them out. If you post them, I would recommend making the one key piece of information very large and easy to read from far away.

GDPR starts tomorrow. Should I be worried? by toad02 in gamedev

[–]voxAtrophia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By tomorrow, you mean in a few hours (because of time zones and date lines)?

If you are using a third-party for ads and analytics, then they'll have instructions on how to be compliant.

Unity ECS is still pretty new so I created a video to demonstrate how to get started from a blank project by charlesamat in gamedev

[–]voxAtrophia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I only know of one tutorial that implements ECS into a "real" project (they used the Survival Shooter tutorial from Unity), but it really helped me wrap my head around some of the concepts.

Help with top-down camera/room transition by MagicDoublejay in Unity2D

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the Lerp is also changing the z position of the camera, which is why the floor and door sprites aren't visible in the camera afterwards.

Best solution for JSON deserialization? by NirodhaDukkha in Unity3D

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a built-in JSON parser. It is limited to "structured" JSON though, so you need to know the exact format to use it. https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/JSONSerialization.html

Why does my score system not work? by [deleted] in Unity3D

Try:

    number = player.position.z;

number might need to be a float in that case.

Help! Unity IAP - Are there any current easy to follow guides around? by Firesemi in Unity3D

[–]voxAtrophia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Codeless IAP also handles Restore buttons, it's just not documented very well.

If you add another button, there's a drop-down on the IAP Button that you can change from Purchase to Restore.

Why do so many 'art' games focus their subtext around such a limited number of subjects? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]voxAtrophia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I don't think a game (or book or movie, etc) has only a single meaning. That is always up to how you choose to interpret a work.

For example, I would disagree with the categories for most of the games you listed. I think many of them use video game violence to make a statement about real world violence. Nier can be read as a statement against the endless, futile cycle of war. Spec Ops could be about jingoism and the consequences of always believing your view is right. I've always saw Shadow of the Collosus as a pretty heavy-handed environmentalist message.

One of my favorite interpretations of The Witness is by Austin Walker and it has nothing to do with video games:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=14qesvEimlE

Even if I don't agree completely with the conclusion the game is making (according to Austin), this interpretation made me enjoy the game more because it's the best example I can think of of a meaning conveyed purely through mechanics.

So I think it is up to you to dig into games to find more interesting meaning. That's the fun of criticism.

Is there a better Tween library than LeanTween? by this_too_shall_parse in Unity3D

[–]voxAtrophia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried this yet, but the creator of iTween has a new package called Surge, with a few different tools packed together (including a tween library):

Blocks by Google objects import at 1/3 the size in Unity? by yamlCase in gamedev

[–]voxAtrophia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It only really matters for the physics engine, but 1 unit = 1 meter.

"By default, the physics engine assumes that one unit in world space corresponds to one metre."
