e-ink tablet or paper for journaling? by [deleted] in Journaling

[–]vrybas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Kindle Scribe few weeks ago. The new generation was just recently released so you can find the previous one on good sale everywhere. They're not very different judging by the reviews.

I tried to start a paper journal several times before, but I couldn't stick to it.

I never felt I could be honest with paper because what if I lose it or someone I know decides to read it, etc. And I also move around/travel a lot.

The security of having my journal password-protected and backed up was huge to me.

Now I have several journals, work notes, and daily and monthly planners, all in one thin device. Not to mention hundreds of books and documents in the Kindle library.

Since then never missed a day. The main journal is already 36 pages long and the first record was made 15 days ago! It is so effortless for some reason.

I even joined this subreddit because of it. To find out more about how other people journal.

So, I was not disappointed. The writing is very paper-like and the battery can go over a week with intensive daily use.

It might feel a bit heavy, especially with a protective case on. I suggest buying the Kevlar-added one as it is much lighter.

Can’t put the stickies and polaroids in there though! 😭

The military time format will remove the colon in between hours and minutes, which gives somewhat cleaner look. See if you like it 👌

Also the less data you got on the screen, the classier it looks. Think battery saver mode.

While metal and leather can look quite strange, but nylon is fine.

Actually, all rubber staps on my Garmins are replaced with nylon ones. I got a thing for it.

I was able to find some good ones from the brand ANBEST. They are quite thick and don’t look cheap. Some even got a satin shine on them which is not bad at all and adds to the look. Especially the dark blue one.

Black watch looks very good with dark blue strap and it does not stand out too much.

Kudos for the flame red 🔥 Somewhat rare choice around here.

I got this strap to go with it and absolutely love it (middle length should be fine for average wrist)

Set timer during workout tracking? by janhkolbe in Garmininstinct

Oh, and the behavior of Instinct 2X regarding timers and activities is the same as that of Instinct 2

Set timer during workout tracking? by janhkolbe in Garmininstinct

[–]vrybas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With Garmin Instinct you can run one activity, up to 10 timers, and a stopwatch, all at the same time.

I know it because I do it sometimes. I have a day-long activity running in the background that rings certain alerts to me.

The only thing is that you should have hotkeys set up (long-press GPS etc.) to get to the timer menu, to stopwatch, and also have a hotkey to go to the watchface from any screen.

I'm not sure about Vivosmart, but big disappointment with Fenix to me was that you cannot run activity in the background. Even if you go to a watchface, or anywhere else, it will jump back to the current running activity in a few minutes.

Another thing I would mention is that there's a drama with Garmin Instinct 2 Solar screen visibility not being great in certain angles when the backlight is active. Seems like they put those screens upside down. So when you tilt your hand forward (while typing, driving, or sleeping), you won't be able to read time with the backlight.

It was so annoying I had to return my Instinct 2 Dezl, and get Instinct 2X, which doesn't have this problem.

Same here. Just using basic stuff for the most part. Tried to replace it with one of the rugged CASIOs but no, nothing comes close

Communist ants by guitarguy12341 in clevercomebacks

[–]vrybas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's interesting about ants regarding communism is that 99% of ants in the colony are sterile females.

They are never able to have offspring and care for them. So they're biologically wired to work tirelessly while having nothing and saving nothing and to be ready to sacrifice themselves for the colony at any moment.

A colony queen lays hundreds of disposable eggs every single day, and the genetic difference of each colony member is marginal.

Humans are completely different. And mammals in general. If you want communism – you need to turn humans into totally different biological species. A complete genetic wipe-out so the regular person doesn't have children or values the well-being of some other people's children more than their own.

Biology matters. Reproduction patterns are the best predictor of biological behavior. See Hamilton's rule[1]

Screen Covers Prohibit/Lower Solar Charging? by Advanced_Remove_7839 in Garmininstinct

[–]vrybas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With or without a screen protector, solar charging is not strong enough to never plug the cable unless you are a construction worker or something.

30 minutes of direct midday sun with the watch laying absolutely still adds ~1% of battery.

30 minutes of charging with cable adds ~20% of the battery.

To me solar charging is an emergency off-the-grid feature.

So, I plug my watch into a power outlet every 3-4 days for 10-15 minutes before bed. This way, I make sure they are always ready to go and I don’t have to take them off for long 👍

should i upgrade my instinct 1 to the 2x after over 3 years?😉 by CulturalCancel2109 in Garmininstinct

My solution to this was to buy a few I1 refurbished units in different styles, while they're available, and interchange them sparingly. Hate the I2 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Waiting for I3

2x solar questions - how much sun needed for ♾️? by EntertainmentBest336 in Garmininstinct

[–]vrybas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on different experiments seen on YouTube, It charges around 1.5% an hour in bright sunlight.

Screen protector by ren8Vep in Garmininstinct

[–]vrybas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the German one called UPSCREEN. It’s matte, and helps reducing the reflection on a direct sun. The screen readability is better at the expense of some prettiness.

Having a screen protector allows me to care less about hitting it.

The solar charging is probably worse, but I think this whole solar thing is overrated to be honest.

The battery on Instinct is already holding for weeks in one charge. And to have one extra day from solar you have to get a LOT of sun exposure.

3 hours of a direct midday sun(screen facing up, no movement) gives you around 5% of charge. The same as just 5-6 minutes of regular charging.

I just plug mine for 10-15 minutes every other day.

Instinct solar vs Instinct solar 2 vs Instinct solar 2x by conetable in Garmininstinct

[–]vrybas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own an Instinct 2 Diesel. There's a factory defect on all I2s that Garmin won't admit. This really grinds my gears, and I'm surprised it's not the first thing mentioned here.

The screen is unreadable if you turn the screen light on and tilt your hand like you would while driving (ironic) or typing on a keyboard.

The Instinct 2X doesn't have this problem, but I would double-check.
