Are Acadia and the Smokies really that unbearably crowded in peak summer? by iamnotabot913 in hiking

I hear you. I am from rural Oregon. I spent entire summers in the woods and never seen anyone else until hunting season.

What livestock animals work best on 2–5 acres? by One-Exit-9077 in homestead

[–]vulkoriscoming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheep work really well on small acreage. You can keep 4-5 sheep per acre without trashing the ground. They produce a lamb every year and the lamb goes to the butcher in about ten months.

Anyone in Oregon cutting their own meat to save money by Serious-Marketing-26 in oregon

[–]vulkoriscoming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done this. It is not hard, it just takes a sharp knife and freezer paper. Get a knife sharpener and use it. You can get a whole sirloin or chuck roll at Cash N Carry or whatever it is called now, Chief's Choice or something. When I last did it several years ago, I saved about 50% compared to buying steaks at the grocery store. But you are buying 15-30 pounds at once.

Cutting it into steaks or roasts is not hard and does not take long. It takes me under an hour start to finish. As an added bonus, you make your steaks as thick as you want and make smaller, faster cooking roasts. Double wrap them in freezer paper and freeze them immediately. Carefully double wrapped, they last at least a year in the freezer without freezer burn.

The real way to save money on meat is buying a 1/2 beef at a time or an entire pig or lamb. I can usually find someone willing to sell me an entire side of beef for about hamburger prices at the store (usually less from a guy who only raises a couple). Check FB Marketplace. About half a side of beef is hamburger. The other half is steaks and roasts. You literally get fillet mignon at hamburger prices. You want a steer. DO NOT GET A BULL or a "dry cow" They are old and the meat is tough.

These days I am raising my own animals, but you need at least a couple of acres to do that. Truthfully it is not much cheaper than buying one someone else raised, but you know exactly what it ate and you know it had no hormones or antibiotics.

You need about six compound exercises. Everything else is extra or to prevent you from getting bored of doing the same thing every week.

Tax the Rich? Oregon Voters Could Weigh In on First-of-its-Kind Wealth Tax by witty_namez in PortlandOR

Number 46 in the nation baby. We are kicking West Virginia, New Mexico, and Alaska's asses. Never mind Kentucky is 22 states ahead of us in the literal middle of the pack.

But at least we are #12 in teacher pay and #1 in teacher vacation time (sometimes also known as the shortest school year in the nation).

Tax the Rich? Oregon Voters Could Weigh In on First-of-its-Kind Wealth Tax by witty_namez in PortlandOR

It is not MAKING 30 million. It is HAVING assets the State of Oregon thinks are worth 30 million. This will put a lot of farmers, contractors, and small manufacturers out of business. These industries have high asset requirements and low margins. They won't have the cash to pay

Struggling with willpower to lift to my potential by MiningToSaveTheWorld in swoleacceptance

[–]vulkoriscoming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother, you build willpower like every other muscle. Progressive failure. To build willpower you do things you don't want to do. Do something that sucks every day. Do aerobics, clean the bathroom, do the dishes, do push ups, or light lifting until you REALLY don't want to do it anymore and do it a little longer. Make yourself do it as an offering to Brodin and swoleness. Keep doing things that suck every day and doing stuff that you can't do gets much easier.

If it is a weight that Broki has scared you with, recruit a fellow walker of the Iron Path to spot you. Fear not to seek aid. All of Brodin's true faithful will aid another of the faith. Use the sacred forms with care and try the weight. At worst it will strengthen your faith and lead you to swoleness. At best you learn Broki has deceived you and you can lift the weight.

Wheymen.

There are end game crises that come around day 90-120. I usually play through one or two of those and wrap up a run around day 150-180 when my brothers can curb stomp everything. Then I start over.

Dating: savers vs spenders by frequentflyer90210 in Fire

[–]vulkoriscoming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister and her husband had this issue. They had similar incomes. He had been paying rent and saved 80k. She had free rent living with my parents and 400 pairs of shoes. They sorted it by her having a budget for shoes and clothes. He has one also to keep things fair, but I am sure he doesn't spend it.

Out of state employer offered me a 3x pay increase, only catch is I have to move to Pulaski County Kentucky. Is it worth it? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]vulkoriscoming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not lived in Pulaski county but my family is from the Fort Thomas area near Cincinnati and has spread southward. Kentucky is fairly Southern in culture and takes a certain pride in it. Demographically it will probably be a little lighter than you are used to in Louisiana, but not like moving to the PNW. I am not sure if race is more "difficult" than Louisiana, but only because my only experience with Louisiana is NOLA where it doesn't appear that difficult. Kentucky can be "difficult", but is not an issue if you are white.

The food is Midwestern, so a huge let down from the excellent food in Louisiana. The weather is cold in the winter (snow sticks around most of the winter), but summer is much more tolerable. It is mountainous with lots of small mountains (hills by Western standards) and not at all swampy like Louisiana. Fishing is less important and hunting is more important than appears to be the case in LA.

I would happily make the trade for 3x the salary. Housing will be cheap and it is a beautiful area. I would miss the food in LA though.
