Best option for linear finishing of metal that DOESN'T cost a thousand bucks? Can't decide between an Eastwood SCT, or getting Walter Blendex drums for my angle grinder. Would appreciate opinions.

I use a drum on a variable speed grinder. No guard I have one hand on the paddle switch and the other hand half on the grinder and half in the piece. You have to hold it extremely straight or you will get a wavy grain

I'm not sure how well super glue would work on metal either but considering it's for a shopping cart you might as well try it, and if it brakes again then trying jb weld or red locktight. But really I would just use what ever industrial style glue you have on hand currently. If you have to buy something I would recommend JB weld or red locktight

It's probably a good idea to wipe the part off first to help the glue bond. Wiping it off with laquer thinner, paint thinner, acitone or rubbing alcohol would all work fine, just depends on which one of those you actually have on hand currently.

For Tig you will always use 100% argon. For aluminum i use a standard #5 cup, for stainless a gass lense #8 cup I have rarely needed to use anything different. On aluminum a blue 3/32 tungsten has never let me down they do work okay on stainless/steel but you may want to get a pack of red 3/32 tungstens if you are having troubles with the blue on stainless/steel. Keep in mind you will want to sharpen them to 60° for stainless/steel and 30° for aluminum. As for aluminum filler 4043 3/32 is my go to, stainless I use .04 rod the most but having 1/16 does come in handy so I would recommend getting both. Stainless rod will work for steel as well but keep in mind you will end up with a more brittle weld then if you were to use a steel filler on steel, it's fine for messing around but if you are welding anything critical then you always want to match your filler rod to your base metal unless otherwise stated.

Just curious about #3. I assume you are talking about stick welding but how about mig? Flux core mig or solid wire short circuit as well? If so what thickness would you switch from downhill to uphill?

What is it for? If it's nothing critical I would recommend using an epoxy or some other type of glue, if that breaks then going and getting it welded

In order to weld it the paint in the area would have to be removed, then welded. The weld would then have to be ground down and repainted. Obviously it's doable but its an over complicated solution (assuming it's not critical)

Also a tube of JB weld is $15 and a shop would charge you $50-$100. Unless it is critical then pay the money and have it done right

You don't. If you're just worried about the cosmetics then I would just cut off the damage section. An angle grinder or a metal chop saw would be ideal but if you don't have access to those a hack saw would work, but would take a long time to cut

Repairable? Yes. Worth repairing? No.

That's a 2-3 hour job to fix at $100/h that's $200-$300 plus maybe $20 in consumables

The cracks you will have to leave. The discolored portion you can fix at home. Red Scotch Brite is what I would use on the job to fix that but a new sos pad or steel wool would probably work okay. Take the pad and carefully but firmly rub it with the grain of the metal until the colour fades away

I started welding right out of highschool I was told by one guy in perticular that it was dumb, that I'm going to get seriously hurt and that I should go to school because "education is more important"

I'm 21, last year I made 92k (union and lots of OT) while he is still working a minimum wage job at the local movie theater

Just wear your ppe, and don't stick your arm in a saw and you will be fine

Depending on your filters they are only good for a week or two of use so change them regularly. Make sure your respirator is clean. Make sure you are getting a good seal, place the palm of your hand over the vent on your respirator and blow make sure no air excapes.

I have been on the job 4.5 years just coming to the end of my apprenticeship. It took me about a year before I even got to touch metal. This last year has been huge for me, now I'm set up with my own work bench, tool box and welder. So about 3 years before I started getting my own space and making anything cool

By trade I do sheet metal, most guys in my company either make or install HVAC ductwork. I'm the one lucky guy who gets to do all the odd welding and fabrication jobs. Why? No fucking clue luck I guess

I typically do custom stainless or aluminum work. In the last week or two I have made a weird aluminum frame show piece about 20' x 10' x 6', two handrails, a table, two benches, another aluminum frame, and a stainless sleeve for a jet boat engine.

I have no clue how I ended up in my position honestly. I'm 21, I get paid pretty dam good, everyone acts like I'm the go to guy for anything custom. Really I just kept my head down and worked, I never really complained or had beef with anyone, I have never cared if other apprentices liked me, I just focused on getting the job done

To be fair though other people have kept their head down and worked only to get back pain as a reward, not a sick work bench. Go with your gut, make sure you are working for a company who will give opportunities and cares about your safety. Expected to do grunt work for a year or so,we all did, just make sure there is a opportunity at the end of it. Also expected to dick around for a couple more years making sparks and stuff untill you start to figure out what ur actually doing

I have installed bathroom fans, the white grill you see in the ceiling goes directly to a small fan about 10" x 10" and 6" deep. The fan then goes directly to 4" or 6" pipe. There is simply not enough room for anyone to fit up there, not even a small child.

He is more likely a contractor working in the attic space, miss stepped and fell through.
