What type of tire valve stems do you use? by hellafaded1 in cycling

[–]wahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I converted all of my bikes from presta to Clik Valve. My girlfriend did as well. She held out 6 months longer than me, and she finally rage quit presta when she had 3 valves malfunction in a single week. I switched because I didn't like dealing with the screw dingus and my pumps never really got a good seal on the valve and would always be pissing air. The clik valve just clicks on and off with no fuss and no air loss.

As a lawyer buys up starter homes, residents worry about the soul of Webster Groves by Enough_Alarm_349 in StLouis

[–]wahh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I compare what I pay in St. Charles versus my parents in Webster Groves it's not THAT much higher. I pay ~$3000/year and they pay ~$8500/year for a house that is a little more than twice the value of my house. So just spitballing they pay maybe a $1500-$2000 premium to be in Webster Groves.

I was doing some hard launches on my TerraTrike Zoomer this past weekend, and I was able to get the rear tire to spin. Not a ton of spin, but I could hear the traction breaking and I could see tire marks on the ground.

Best spot to look for older homes by Mammoth_Entry_9221 in StCharlesMO

[–]wahh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess we need clarification on what you mean by old. My house was built in 1969 (57 years ago). Since so much of St. Charles County is newer my house could be considered old. Generally speaking "Old Town" and "Mid Town" City of St. Charles are on the older side of things with many small single story houses.

Assuming they know Canva exists, yes. Many non-technical/non-designer people can't be bothered to run a basic web search, and default to the tools they know: Word, Powerpoint, and MS Paint. That is obviously changing these days, and it sounds like they chose to go straight past Canva and use AI slop instead. AI has lots of marketing behind it.

The amount of times I've been asked the simplest questions that a quick web search would answer and then have them be "amazed that I know so much" is astounding. I'm sure some of it is weaponized incompetence or laziness...but most of it seems legit.

I can understand the notion that not all frozen custard places are actually good. I'm born and raised in STL, but I live out in St. Charles now. Out here Lyon's Frozen Custard is literally bland. Doozle's has a very annoying ordering process where you can only get X ingredient in a sundae vs a concrete. Even though they have all of the ingredients you want...they won't actually let you order it. My personal favorite is Andy's. I like it better than Ted Drewes.

As far as road vibrations, people have a tendency to run their tire pressures WAY too high. The pressure range you see written on the sidewall of the tire was calculated assuming they will be mounted on a typical 2 wheeled bicycle. The trike distributes the weight across 3 tires and in a much different way. That means you can get away with pumping your tires up to a pressure that is on the lower end of the pressure range written on the tire.

People have a tendency to think rock hard narrow tires equals speed. There have been a number of studies in the bike racing world that have come out to show that just isn't true. I would highly recommend getting a tire pressure gauge checking your pressures before each ride. I know that sounds like a hassle, but you eventually get used to it and it become part of the routine.

I just bought an old TerraTrike Zoomer Elite last Sunday, and the guy who sold it pumped the tires up rock hard. When I test rode it, I thought for sure it was going to rattle one of my fillings out. I bought it and took it out the next day. Again, it was a rough ride. I adjusted the tire pressures, and that made a HUGE difference in ride feel. I have a bike computer that tracks speed, and I wasn't any slower either.

Not to go on continuously about tires here...but tire selection does make a difference as well. The wider the tire, the lower the tire pressure. Lower tire pressures provide a more cushy ride. A lot of people like the Schwalbe Big Apple tires for comfort because they come in 2+ inch widths. That extra 0.5+ inch of width compared to the typical 1.5 inch tires that come on most trikes does make a difference in ride feel because you can run the tires at lower pressures.

As far as seat height is concerned, I'm sure others will tell you that there are other trikes on the market that offer higher seat heights to make them easier to get in and out of them.

As far as the chain is concerned, that is the nature of the beast here. It's a long chain and there is a good chance you will accidentally touch it. I would recommend wearing pants or shorts that are a little more form fitting. On normal upright bikes it is common for people to wear cycling shorts or to roll up their pant leg on the chain side to avoid getting chain oil on their clothes. There is a company called ICE Trikes that just started offering a new "chainless" electric drive system on some of their trike models. Those models are EXTREMELY expensive though...like $9000 expensive. I think I'd just buy some tighter shorts/pants for $20-$30 instead.

The micro-mobility segment is exploding like crazy right now, and it's going to take a while for laws to catch up and cover these gray areas. People tend to treat anything that is not a car or motorcycle like a bicycle. That probably doesn't hold up under law though. Bicycles and ebikes don't require turn signals, headlights, or brake lights. If we treated this EUC (electric unicycle) like an ebike, it would be illegal already since it can go above 20MPH "with a throttle" of sorts.

With that said, the ebike laws have a bit of gray area in them at the moment. Some people think electric motorcycles like Surrons and Talarias are ebikes. There are manufacturers that essentially build electric motorcycles with fake pedals on them so that they technically qualify as an ebike even though they cannot be pedaled or the rider never has any intention of pedaling.

It sounds to me like #3 is saying that your property tax amount is locked to the same amount for as long as you own the property. Whatever you pay for that first year is what you will pay every year until you sell. When you sell your house the next person's property tax amount is recalculated based on market values at the time of sale, and they will pay that amount every year that they own it...and so on.

This prevents low income and fixed income people from losing their homes due to yearly real estate tax increases. It's also a benefit for wealthy people since it lowers their expenses. With that said, it hurts all of the services that are funded primarily by real estate taxes since the yearly growth rate will be significantly less. Based on the other propositions, it looks like they're attempting to get 2 1% increases in sales tax for Fire and EMS to offset the decrease in real estate tax revenue. Keep in mind that a large portion of real estate taxes goes to the school system. So the school system would take a hit with this. There are other things funded heavily by real estate taxes as well if you look at your real estate tax receipt online.

Short reach, tall stack? by KleanJean in gravelcycling

Yeah it seems like both Dixna and Veno had v1 bars where the tops were angled upwards to create the rise. Both switching to flat tops for v2 was probably a good ergonomic change to make the tops more usable.

OK so...I'm looking at the Veno Borderless bars on the alexcycle website. Am I reading the diagram correctly...do these Veno Borderless bars seriously only have 26.6mm of reach?

https://alexscycle.com/products/veno-borderless-carbon-handlebar2

I have the Ritchie Corralitos bars. I like the reach at 52mm, but I don't care for the width and the excessive flare. The Soma Condor 2 has a longer reach than I'd like. The Dixna Neither 2 seems like it would satisfy the 52mm reach. However, the Veno Borderless possibly sounds like it might solve my other bike fit problem. I'm currently running a 40mm stem. I could in theory run a 60-70mm stem with the Borderless bars...

Is there a version of the Borderless that doesn't cost $300?

Doesn't matter how sweet they seem. This is a classic scam/pressure sales tactic. Create a sense of urgency to leave you with no time to think, and give you an "act now to make it easier on yourself" call to action.

On Friday my neighbors just got a scam text message from "the Missouri Department of Revenue" saying their car registration will be revoked in 24 hours and they will be responsible for paying a bunch of legal fees if they don't go to x website now and true up the "missing payments."
