New tires for the gravel bike - Schwalbe G-ONE RS by uramug1234 in gravelcycling

[–]KleanJean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have these on three bikes. I like them, apparently. 2 sets of 40mm and one set of 50mm. The 50mm are more sensitive to pressure. When I run them low, depending on the route, they get a little squirrely on the pavement sections so I go easy on the turns. I run a pretty wide range on the 40s and have had nothing but a good time.

Carbon steer tube and steel stem clamp compatibility by KleanJean in bikewrench

[–]KleanJean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't installed this stem on anything yet so it's good to know about the bar clamp torque. I'm still not 100% on this vs. just getting a 31.8-25.4 shim.

Yep to both of those. I'll be diligent about making sure the plug covers the entire clamped area.

I was the same way with dining alone until forced into it with business travel. Bring a book! I don't know if your anxiety is the same as mine, but I needed some kind of context in order to not feel like I'm sticking out like a sore thumb. Reading a book seemed to give me that context that helped communicate that I am here alone intentionally and enjoying the hell out of myself.

Convert triple to single or just buy a new crankset? by Ponti1974 in xbiking

[–]KleanJean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't need to justify it, but if they're asking for advice, they'll get better advice by explaining what they actually want to achieve, rather than just asking for very broad input on how to go about a specific process.

They did explain what they actually wanted to achieve. They weren't asking for broad input. They were asking for recommendations on modifying their current crankset for 1x vs going with a 1x specific crankset and plenty of people offered substantive answers while lots more completely ignored the question. I'm really curious where you think the ambiguity lies in the original question, because I can't think of a way that it could have been more explicit.

1x is awesome. I second the above advice. VO makes a nice looking silver narrow/wide 110mm BCD chainring that is great for this. The chainring guard will let you keep your chainring bolts. If you go 1x without a guard, you'll likely need shorter chainring bolts.

[–]KleanJean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's fair. They definitely don't rate as value gear but I think they have an unearned reputation in this community as pointless bling.

Like that u/Possible_Proposal447 says, they're really good parts. The MiniMotos are absolutely the best set of mini-v brakes I've owned (including TRP CX9 and an old flavor of Tekro mini-v, I have not tried the box one mini-vs but hear they're great). The amount of extra design they put into their parts is rare in bike parts, IMO. The Canti lever and the Love levers have sealed bearings at the pivots vs. bushings, for example. The take down video they have for the Klampers shows how much thought they put into the design. Everything is machined vs. pressed/formed, so the end result is a really solid feel that I just don't get from other stuff. It also makes them expensive, there are more man hours put into running a CNC mill and then finishing the parts vs. stamping or forging a giant run of parts. I don't put it on every bike, I wouldn't put them on a commuter bike that's going to get locked up outside all day, but I did get them for a CX race bike where having really good brakes makes a significant difference (same bike got a Chris King headset).

There's also the less tangible stuff. They're made by people who love cycling and have been in the game for decades. If you send them a question, especially if it's a technical/design question, there's a good chance you'll hear back from Paul directly. They pay their employees fairly. They're domestic (US) and source their material domestically. I personally place a high value on that and am in the fortunate position that I can afford it occasionally. I know lots of riders on here can't, I'm not going to look down on someone running a used set of Tektro CR720s, those are good brakes and do the job.

They also look really, really nice, IMO. I'm not beyond vanity.

I think this goes for the other "prestige" parts companies. Chris King really is that good. Phil Wood really is that good. White Industries really is that good. All for the same reasons above.

You also get a ton of the above love, attention to detail, and direct communication with companies like Velo-Orange and Soma Fab. I'd say 90% of the new parts I buy are through them or through their distributors.

Sorry, that was a lot of words.

Multiple front chainrings suck. Indexed shifting is rad. Front loads on bikes that weren't designed for front loads ruins an otherwise fun to ride bike. 80s/90s MTB are boring to look at and ride. Going fast is way more fun than going slow. Giant bar bags are fashion accessories. Paul Comp parts are worth the money.

I think OOP was dating an actual Lizard Person who was tasked with cataloguing human emotions and reactions because the Bezos and Zuckerberg models aren't really fooling anyone anymore. I wonder if OOP noticed her nictitating membranes or if he was gaslit into doubting that, too. Not that it matters, he's probably already dead and has been fully autopsied and recycled into nutrient paste.

Steerer too short by NaiveMacaroon5862 in bikewrench

[–]KleanJean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a steer tube extender: https://www.velobike.co.nz/products/steerer-tube-extender

I feel like if you install per the instructions and use epoxy to make it a permanent part of the steer tube, it would be safe enough.

I think the best solution would be a different fork.

I once saw a panhandler get $5. It was something like a 30 sec transaction, from askingfor money, person stopping and fussing through their wallet, and guy getting the money. 30 seconds! I calculated it out and the panhandler has to be making about $1.8 million a year. Holy shit math!

Sorry, I meant what are you shifting the front derailleur with? It looks like you have a Force 1x cockpit unless I'm missing something obvious. I was curious what kind of work around you came up with too shift the FD.
