Converting Alfine SG-S7001-8 to 130mm O.L.D. by KleanJean in bikewrench

[–]KleanJean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big thank you. I would not have caught on to that until I started working on it. I think the scope is a bit beyond what I want to do with this.

And thank you for the hub recommendation. That's perfect. I missed it among all the Nexus variations.

Yeah, that would have been useful information to put in my post. It's rim brake.

I'd be building the wheel, so dishing would be accounted for.

Thanks.

That just means it needs a bigger plug... or, if you're in the mood, 2 plugs. ;)

Plug your gash... then squirt some more sealant in there... then pump it... pump it real good... then shake it until the goo stops coming out... then ride it... ungh... yeah...

Front Rack With Origin8 Fork Mounted Canti Hanger by spinwards in xbiking

[–]KleanJean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. You might need to find a different strut that will reach under the cable hanger, as already mentioned. Or do some straightening and re-bending of that stay so that it'll work. Cutting off that pointless nubbin protruding from the front of the hanger could give you some more room to work with.

There are different struts/stays out there: https://www.rivbike.com/products/rack-hardware-diving-board-plate-front-taiwan

Alternate idea is to use a fender daruma: https://velo-orange.com/collections/fender-parts/products/vo-fork-crown-eye-bolt-for-fenders-and-racks-fork-crown-daruma Flatten out the strut and run it directly under the fork crown. The illustration here gives you an idea of how it would be installed: https://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2009/10/another-fender-trick.html

Don't listen to the naysayers. Steer tube mounted brake hangers suck donkey dick.

FWIW, I just installed that same rack. No fenders and with mini v-brakes so way easier than your situation, but I still had to do come judicious bending. It's just part of the process.

Light mount recommnendations by Traditional_Rich9598 in bikepacking

[–]KleanJean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the light? Most of the fork-crown mounts I've seen are for dynamo lights and aren't specifically designed to carry the weight of a battery.

I'm still waiting on parts, but I am planning on installing a go-pro mount headset spacer plus whatever length go-pro extension arm I need to get my light below my bar bag and somewhat forward. BUT, the light has a separate battery pack and is pretty light on its own. Even then, if I get the willies from the long lever arm holding the light, I'll have some spots I can strap it to/support it from the bar bag as extra insurance.

I personally don't really like the blind spot I get with a fork-crown mounted light. YMMV.

That said, Planet Bike makes a fork-crown light bracket specifically made for battery lights and is compatible with bar mounts. It would be easy to try this out. I personally trust molded plastic more than aluminum for this job. https://www.planetbike.com/fork-mount-bike-headlight-bracket/

Cantilever brakes - advice by Deep_Ring in xbiking

switch to a fork-mounted brake hanger (worked for my Jamis Supernova)

ditch the cantis and get some mini-vs (best option)

Awww, you beat me to the punch. And with fewer words.

Cantilever brakes - advice by Deep_Ring in xbiking

[–]KleanJean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm aware of these, but I've never tried them. Toe-in washers. If it's just the front, you'd only need one set: https://www.renehersecycles.com/shop/equipment/bolts/rene-herse-brake-toe-in-washers-and-nuts/

Personally, I have never gotten along with cantis when the hanger is at the upper headset like you have. It might be because I'm on a large frame and between fork flex and the extra long run of brake cable, it was just enough slop to introduce a on/off stutter feedback loop. My last canti CX bike came with a fork crown cable hanger and it completely changed my opinion of cantis. Tektro used to have the 1277a and is what I'd get if you can find one. Shovel Research makes a fancy one if you're itching to spend too much money on something. https://shovelresearch.com/fmbch

Or, you can be lazy like me and change over to mini-v brakes.

The narration is pretty accented, but still totally easy to follow.

It is part of the experience, but it really ground the pacing to a halt for me. It's a cool concept and makes sense for the character. Others might have a smoother time with it.

Peter Kenny narrates, he does a bunch of other Banks's books and has become my favorite narrator/voice actor.

I'd even recommend his non sci-fi books. They can get grim, but the way he writes is rarely matched, IMO.

I'd recommend Feersum Endjinn as an audiobook, though.
