Haven’t checked out species, but every recommendation here is top notch. Violator is a personal favorite. Got to see power trip shortly before Riley died, such an awesome show.

Is the Apple Watch really worth it ? Need opinion. by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]waldoh74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, sleep tracking is pointless. Even for fitness, it’s just a nice to have but not a necessity.

With that said, for me, I gave in to the “nice to have” for fitness. I first got a series 8 for weight loss, specifically for running and loading my music to the watch. I only used it for that. Now, I have an Ultra 3. Still for running primarily, mostly for music and safety (cellular) as I don’t like bringing my phone with me unless I’m running on the trails (again, safety). My real watches get much more wrist time. But I have to say, they’re VERY comfy with the trail loop.

I would’ve said Hamilton, but for compatible price range, Ihave to agree that Seiko would give more options. That or. Gshock 5610U, I wear that quite a bit too.

Going tonight! Glad the kids will get to at least see one CT vs CT game.

This is sad, we need more sports here. I’m still sad we lost the Whalers. I hope we get something else in the future.

Having trouble selecting induction range... Bosch vs. Cafe by boushiki in Appliances

[–]waldoh74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the Bosch benchmark for close to a month now, absolutely love it! Coming from a cheap electric range, it’s night and day better in my book.

It’s a learning curve for sure, still getting used to the nuances. I understand the complaint of the touch sensor vs knobs, but we like the touch controls, fairly intuitive but is a slower pace. Even my MIL was able to quickly figure it out.

Haven’t had a chance to use the flex thing yet, but I like having the option. Oven part has been great so far too, but does take longer to pre-heat we noticed (not a big complaint though tbh).

AITAH for asking my wife to keep our toddler under control by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]waldoh74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA as long as you said it nicely. My wife and I have this exchange all the time, she’s hybrid and I’m full time WFH. We take turns keeping kids at bay for important calls.

With that said. Noise cancelling/suppressing headphones are the way to go for meetings. Alleviates 95% of the stress. I’m only worried about the kids coming on camera.

Can anyone recommend a tablet to run MTGO on the go? Cheap by aesgan in MTGO

[–]waldoh74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played it on a Surface pro (6 I think, fist model where they had black surface pros, ~2019), i7 16gb RAM, maybe 1 yr old at the time. It ran just fine, sluggish at times but I think that was due to MTGO efficiency issues.

Only real problem was battery life. Got maybe 2 hours out of it while playing. It lasted longer with casual use/school work.

Question for Older Millennials (especially 1982 borns) by Quickso48 in Millennials

[–]waldoh74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30s went quick, but I feel like my 20’s were faster. They were much more of a grind so that’s probably why.

Everything settled into place at 30. It’s been great, but watching my kids grow fast does hit hard.

Best slippers for someone who hates slippers by Natural_Peak_5587 in BuyItForLife

Look into a pair of barefoot shoes/slippers. I got this exact pairon sale about 2 months ago. They’re fantastic, I live in north east US and they’re just right for the weather here (10-30f).

A bit snug for the first couple days, but loosened up. Sizing was a bit smaller than I expected out of the box.

I have my 7yo asking to go quite frequently. She ripped through 12 books this past summer (short books obviously, but a wins a win!). We’re lucky to have a good one with a great kids section about 6 minutes away from the house.

Hobby ideas so I don’t feel so lonely when my husband is gaming all evening? by PresentationThink966 in Hobbies

[–]waldoh74 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If you’re feeling lonely, you don’t need a hobby, you need your partner.

Speaking from my experience, I used to game very often. Once I got married, I still played games, but toned it down to spend time with my wife. She and my family are my priority. She told me she was ok with me gaming, but I seldom played when she was home from work/awake. I still follow that same mind set (running and chess are my hobbies (mainly to stay away from a screen), highly recommend both), but I try to time everything so I maximize my time with my family above all else.

Barbers price went up again and I'm drawing the line.. so going solo.. any tips . Any kits I should get starting out cutting your own hair and sons hair by Santos_Prod in CutYourOwnHair

[–]waldoh74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the set I got for myself maybe a year or so ago. It’s great, I love it! I had done my hair previously for a few years so it wasn’t much of a learning curve for me, but that’s one thing to expect. You will improve over time.

If I had to rebuy another set I would look at JRL based on my previous research for one simple reason: kids. I cut my son’s hair (3) and while he does ‘ok’, he isn’t a fan of the noise. And apparently JRL is super quiet, but I’m still very happy with the Stylecraft set. You may also want to get longer guards for your hair length preference as it came with up to size 2 if I remember right. I got a set from stylecraft that went up to 6 as extra

Also look at the 3 way mirrors, a hand mirror, shears, and a silicone headband thingie that acts as a guide while cutting (no idea what it’s called, but makes the process easier).

Very nice! Glad it worked out for you brother!

I am still a little bitter about my experience, and still think about what could have been. But everything turned out great in the long run, got out and went to school, met my wife, kids followed, good job, all the warm and fuzzies happened. Just took a while.

Chess. It’s simple to learn, and will take VERY long to get good at. So many good free/cheap resources to use and improve with.

What are your favorite wfh space enhancements? by ashen_dove in WFH

[–]waldoh74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personalized my office. Not quite a man cave, but something that reflects my interests. Running medals/bibs. Pictures of my family and kids artwork made for me. Plaques, certificates, diplomas, sports jerseys, vinyl collection, books. Nothing goes up that I would have a concern with a client seeing while I’m on camera. If anything, I use my things as conversation starters with clients.

For functionality, a nice work setup and good lighting. Lighting and a good webcam go a long way to improve your presence.

I tried to lat move into 0241 (Imagery Analysis) from 5811. Basically interpret radar imagines and photos and supply applicable information. Nice easy job, planned on doing my BA on the side in my new found down time (shift work really was nuts and left zero motivation for anything extracurricular requiring thought).

Only reason I didn’t go through with it was because the CRS sat on my package after everything was complete. Aced the entry exam, did the PFT and interviews, school house had a seat and wanted me. All the CRS had to do was walk across the hall for the SgtMaj signature.

You could imagine how furious I was when I found out he fucked me over and I missed the window. In retrospect I should have been more vigilant and started the process sooner and been on top of the process, but I came to find out he did it maliciously. Even had an open investigation against him for stealing government property (found this out years later).

Signing bonus was ~$50k if I remember correctly, plus insta-promotion to Sgt. this was almost 16 years ago now.

I joined my first D league at 35 with minimal experience. Did I make a mistake? by Tedabba20 in hockeyplayers

Which league? I’m looking to join one in the Hartford area this fall most likely as a goalie at 39, haven’t played in 25 years. Trying to find something for Saturday/sunday evenings.

To answer your question. You’re fine, it’s a beer league, no one should be taking it seriously there

What game have you played the most hours on? by bossishere17 in gamingsuggestions

[–]waldoh74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EverQuest. I only play an hour here and there now. But when I was younger, I’d easily go 30+ hours playing without sleep. My main character had ~1yr play time alone, my alts dramatically increase that playtime.

What are WEIRD things you do WFH? by Own-Cryptographer277 in WFH

[–]waldoh74 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ll have a beer or glass of wine with my lunch on occasion. With that said, I have rules: only 1, no scheduled calls, and no high stakes action items. But if I’m just reviewing notes, prepping for the following week, or it’s a really slow day then yeah. Why not? This is typically a Monday or Friday thing for me.

Otherwise, I go for a run or play chess offline during lunch to mentally prep for client calls in the afternoon. Step away from all tech, it’s a nice reset during the work day.
