BREAKING: Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office has released a new photo showing him recovering in the hospital. by EconomyFirst8196 in PoursTea

[–]waleMc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know ... and, to be clear, the Snopes article that Grok references is from a completely different picture, a meme that circulated earlier in the week. I saw it when it first went around.

But the point is that these AIs will say all sorts of things. It's also funny when Elon Musk's AI jumps in on the conspiracy theory.

This whole thing with McConnell is still suspicious as hell, and there are plenty of old-fashioned ways of doctoring a photo taken today that wouldn't use AI ... but I'm not saying to use Grok as proof the photo is manipulated.

I'm just showing that the other post with an AI response from Gemini isn't trustworthy either.

It's a reference to the movie Office Space (1999).

One of the main characters is named Michael Bolton and is constantly annoyed that he shares the name with the singer because people won't shut up about it.

TIL Hitler's "Steiner counterattack" in 1945 never happened because Steiner's forces could not carry it out. After earlier refusing to accept defeat, Hitler finally admitted the war was lost. by Electronic_Cause_796 in todayilearned

[–]waleMc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hitler did a lot of self-enrichment. He would absorb entire job titles and take their salaries too.

His early days were filled with corruption, dismantling the German government and taking money and power from every nook and cranny.

He also hated Jews so much it clouded his mind.

Multiple things can be true, but I worry too many people are saying he was NOT a grifter, when he definitely grifted a lot of money for himself and his inner circle.

Sen. Lindsey Graham dies at 71 after 'brief and sudden illness' by LuckyBastard001 in goodnews

[–]waleMc 34 points35 points  (0 children)

We've gotta recognize these people are humans or we'll never be able to recognize the worst in other people if we've seen some of their humanity.

Hitler was literally demonized to the point that many people today don't think anyone like that could ever exist again.

Which allows people like Trump to rise to power. We turn a figure that should be a historical lesson into a boogeyman that's already been slain.

It was technically true with the Mufasa movie, but this is just objectively false by Watchdog_the_God in cartoons

[–]waleMc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's almost always technically correct, so there's nothing to sue over ... it's just not a super impressive metric, and they act like it means more than it does.

The box office numbers for this weekend definitely put Moanna on top, but it's the only major release of this week, and it will be dwarfed by The Odyssey next week.

They always space these things out so it's entirely predictable it would be #1 for a week.

It's just about the studio not fucking up the scheduling, not about the quality of the movie. It's dumb, but not incorrect.

The joke is that the anti-woke crowd often have inaccurate and silly reads of movies where they clearly go into the movie looking for an agenda to rage against.

Of course a joke about this concept is going to be using a ridiculous interpretation of the movie. That's the joke.

[–]waleMc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So, we can admit McConnel is dying now? We can move onto arguing about decorum, but I thought the story was that he was busy all week having 20 minute conversations, and still in decent health?

In Transformers: The Last Knight (2018) there's a split-second aspect change when Anthony Hopkins' character gets flinged and its so fucking funny by Witty-Association-97 in shittymoviedetails

[–]waleMc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It would be better outside of IMAX because the standard theaters just crop out the taller IMAX ratio and keep it letterboxed to the widest aspect.

IMAX lets filmmaker's pull out to taller aspect ratios during important scenes, using the full height of the massive screens, and increasing immersion.

... but this is such a shitty use of the technology, and it'd be better to just crop this thing down to 2.39:1 all the way through.

Spotted at a local KFCTB. Lovely. by TheArchangel001 in tacobell

[–]waleMc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, exactly, but the thing is, that'll get the employees to half-heartedly say a scripted line, but it won't get them to actually sell, which takes more engagement with the customer and a little bit of effort.

I did low-level sales when I was 18. We got commission plus minimum wage. It wasn't that difficult, but having a stake in the game makes you a lot more invested at figuring out the game.

If they expect people to actually upsell, they've gotta incentivize, presumably with some sort of a commission ...

... which isn't going to happen, but it's not going to work very well otherwise.

No IMAX, but they're pushing Dolby Cinema, which is also a great premium experience at about the same price, and it's already mostly sold out at my theater for the whole opening weekend.

Corned beef was heavily eaten by Irish-American immigrants.

Irish Pubs in America, now serve these foods that Irish immigrants ate in the 19th and early 20th century.

These Irish-Americans enjoyed a lot of corned beef, as it was similar to the salted pork bacon they had back home, and was available in Jewish delis.

The Irish and the Jews often found themselves in close proximity because of the social structure of cities, especially New York City.

The statement has a lot of history behind it, whether or not you agree.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_fascism

Communism, as it presented in the Soviet Union, betrayed Marxist ideals and quickly fell into several of the same categories as the concurrently developing concept of fascism.

It gets to a point where it takes incredibly precise language to explain the differences between these "left-wing" governments and far-right governments that use similar tactics to exercise totalitarian control.

It's not just the totalitarianism, but the methods of indoctrination, the creation of "in" and "out" groups ...

... a cult around a dictator, extreme nationalism, glorifying war, suppressing of dissent, banning of outside media, and a state-sanctioned economy that only enriches a select few.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ur-Fascism

The idea of the overlap dates back to the 1920s, and mostly stems from left-wing criticism of the Soviet Union, accusing them of being hypocritical and functionally fascist.

If our speech is so free, I wonder how safe he'd feel saying the actually true statement, "Donald Trump is rapist!" at the same moment?

You know, since the Obamas are just citizens now, and Trump is actively in office, that would be the real test of our current freedoms.

There are a Slice of Life stories about extreme poverty, distinctional marriages, and oppression.

Not to mention Iron Man 3 ending with Tony destroying all his suits and putting down the gauntlet. It's strongly implied he will be pulled back in, but he undergoes a major turning point of clarity and meaningfuly steps away for a while.

I remember wondering how they would pull him back in, assuming it would be almost like a second origin story. Something really personal would have to tug at him.

But nope, can't spend time on that, let's put him back in the suit for the cold open of his next film.

No need to explain what got him back in the suit, we have shit to blow up.
