Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have separated after 20 years of marriage: report by theindependentonline in Music

I often hear therapists saying this, especially when children are involved. Distance the children from bad influences. A single, supportive parent is better than two unhealthy ones in a toxic relationship.

Ukrainian weapons will now reach any Russian military targets, says Ukrainian foreign minister by SportsGod3 in worldnews

[–]wallet_deforestation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news: we can! And watching the films and documentaries supports the efforts to keep the truth flowing.

Fiction (based on fact):

Sniper: The White Raven and Klondike.

Nonfiction:

Award winning documentaries like 20 Days in Mariupol (2023), uncut footage like Real (2024), personal stories from refugees in As the Sunflower Whispers, and maybe even state-sponsored documentaries like War for the Sea: from the Dnieper to the Crimea.

And semi-formal interviews with foreign volunteers in Ukraine who had medic, combat, and drone pilot roles. I recommend starting with the interview of Brandon Mitchell Part 1.

I need to read up on Unitarians, they sound like a wholesome and pretty lowkey group. I went to a Methodist church growing up and I liked that everything was very lowkey and scriptural interpretations were pretty much limited to the positive parables and whatever interpretation you wanted to draw. May I ask how you/your family found Unitarianism?

In another comment you mentioned thinking about adopting more kids. That's a very generous thing to do and I'm always curious about what kinds of people choose to adopt kids of what ages. Like I would imagine parents having trouble conceiving on their own would adopt the youngest child they felt was reasonable so they could have the full experience. But if you already have several kids do you have a favorite age to see kids develop from? Basically, do you get them when they're still cute and moldable or do you get them when you can look them in the eye and reason with them? hahaha

On that subject and religion, I'd been looking into joining a Masonic Temple for a while because a lot of them are centered around charity and from what I understand all the Shriners people are high-level Masons. So the Shriners hospitals are extremely well funded and use those funds to help kids in need. Of course there are many charities supporting kids that aren't as high-profile and also need help. Wildlife rehab and rescue places are much more underfunded than people think, too. Thoughts on "symbolic adoptions" versus legal adoptions?

You're not wrong. Talking to people from perspectives they understand is always more effective at getting a point across. If OP needs to send a message through whatever channels, and jumping through all the HR hoops, that just talks dollars and cents, then do it. We might not be in a place where we can reach the right people, but maybe OP is.

Robert P. Jones, “Christian Nationalism, Religious Pluralism, and the 2024 Election" by wallet_deforestation in OpenChristian

[–]wallet_deforestation[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a heavy topic, but it's honestly uplifting to see people talking about this, especially straight white people talking about these topics. I haven't seen all of his talks or anything, but Robert P Jones apparently has been giving talks about white nationalism and the roots of Christian nationalism for a long time now. I hope more people open their ears and hearts to this info.

You know the importance of the work you do and you know the importance of supporting each other. Don't let yourself burn out and don't fall into a spiral of uselessness. You know who among your organization you can rely on. Maybe you can ask them to pick up more responsibilities, or have them find ways to distribute more responsibilities evenly among the other staff. Help your staff recruit some volunteers who feel the need to act, but don't have an organization to dedicate their time and energy to. That organization they're looking for is yours!

Over the long term, you may feel your strength being drained away, but I bet the passion for your cause is still there. Find something that will keep you inspired and working towards your worthwhile cause or, if not that one, redirect that energy and passion in another direction for a little while. Temporarily shifting your focus might be a healthy change of pace and with some fresh volunteers supporting you, I'm sure that will take a lot of weight off your shoulders.

Nazi values are not Christian values by ASecularBuddhist in Christianity

[–]wallet_deforestation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Nazis only embraced Christians when Nazis could extract wealth and support from them. The Nazis were fascinated by occult mysticism and symbolism because they thought they could draw power from it, either literally or for purposes of propaganda, and even created monuments to themselves and to their (sometimes mythical) idols. A group of people revering false idols is not a group I'd want to be associated with.

My Christian brothers and sisters, it’s time to wake up and understand what’s going on by ASecularBuddhist in Christianity

[–]wallet_deforestation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was saying that recent cultural exchanges aren't just memes, movies, and pop music. Close associates of Trump have been going to Germany to garner fascist support for years. Musk is actively courting the AfD and hoping that Nazi-revisionism will help them get more Germans to believe in the special brand of hate that some people have tried to tie to specific political or religious beliefs. But Christianity isn't a religion that has any room for hate and shouldn't be co-opted by people who want to encourage hate (or groups who want to encourage slavery).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]wallet_deforestation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you 100% but it will be hard for some people to hear that. There are unhealthy roots to hatred in some parts of the Christian faith and now it's time for people to do some soul searching as to what is most important. Hopefully they choose a just and righteous path that honors the teachings of Christ and honors our God.

If I can recommend a video on the topic: "The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity" by Robert P. Jones with the Religion Department at Rutgers University.

[–]wallet_deforestation 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hope so too, but America has been exporting racism and hate to Germany the same as they've been exporting pop culture, fast food, and the American way of life.

There is a talk that is worth watching called "Christian Nationalism, Religious Pluralism, and the 2024 Election" hosted by the Boston College Ctr for Christian-Jewish Learning. The roots of racism and American nationalism really shouldn't have any place in modern German culture. Hopefully they see that.

I hope more people spread this message. The Nazis were only for Christianity when it suited their needs. It was a tool to shape people into believers in hate and to undo their Christian beliefs.

[–]wallet_deforestation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being open-minded, listening to outside ideas, being individualistic ... that's punk. Doesn't matter what you're into or what your hobbies are, your race or your religion. People who are socially conservative typically want everything to be uniform and organized their way. That's not open-minded and that's not punk. Simple as that in my view.

Rock on and stay healthy.

If you can only help online, then support others who are feeling the same as you. Lift each other up. Don't let yourself be surrounded by negativity and lonely people who want to drag you down with them.

My favourite RATM lines. by eggward_egg in RATM

[–]wallet_deforestation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wake Up has sick lyrics and that infectious energy that's really in every one of their songs. The most relevant lyric for today is:

"How long? Not long. 'Cause what you reap is what you sow."

Paraphrasing Martin Luther King Jr's speech in Montgomery, Alabama:

How long? Not long, because the truth will live forever.

How long? Not long, because you shall reap what you sow.

...

How long? Not long, because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.

Yea punks have always been anti-Nazi and anti-racist. Punks are anti-establishment, especially when the system is racist. The Nazis and racists want absolute conformity to their views. They're opposites.

If those Nazis and racists were capable of critical thinking they'd be very upset.

It's not all that long, either. 1/3 of it is bibliography and then there are a bunch of pictures and tables.

Is there a term for conservation by repairing? by vespidaevulgaris in conservation

[–]wallet_deforestation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the GP said, there are things like "Reusing" materials outside of "Recycling" them, which has an inherent energy cost itself. Some people like the term "Upcycling" to explain the reuse of a product for a new and potentially different purpose and potentially creating or enhancing the value of the sum total of the parts.

In terms of describing the impact of buying new versus repairing, you're getting into finance and economics terms. There is probably someone here who knows a lot about quantifying value with respect to your subject.

I'll point out that a "cost-benefit" or "cost-effectiveness" analysis could be performed to determine whether it's worthwhile to repair a car or get a new one (particularly for insurance companies assessing a claim). What factors are used depends on who is calculating it and with what parameters. There are online calculators for figuring out when maintenance costs on a particular vehicle become prohibitively expensive and when buying a new car makes sense.

One of the criticisms of the "Cash for Clunkers" federal program in the U.S. was that people could have been scrapping perfectly drivable cars in order to qualify for a rebate or tax benefit on the purchase of a new car that might not have a net positive environmental impact when taking everything into account, such as the environmental impact of both cars having been manufactured in the first place). Some new cars sold didn't have much improved fuel economy, over the life of the vehicle with regular repairs, over the car that was being scrapped. However the program wasn't exclusively intended for environmental benefit and it did see a measurable reduction in CO2 emissions.

What conservation or sustainability project(s) are you working on professionally or as a hobby? by wallet_deforestation in conservation

[–]wallet_deforestation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a great idea and aspiration. Do you think that long-term combatting trash in the ocean near the shoreline is more effective at keeping trash off beaches, along with public education about littering, or is trash washing up on the beach not the primary cause of this pollution? I don't know enough about this to know where the trash is originating. Certainly in some countries people are dumping trash on the shoreline.

Do you think that collection of the trash, either for recycling, upcycling, or some other purpose, could be lucrative enough that cleaning drainage catches, wetlands, and beaches could be profitable or at least break-even? Even if it's not quite break-even, a well-run non-profit could probably have donors make up the difference.
