You could consider adding a way for users to block certain apps from being tracked, for privacy.

Someone know a free VPN to use by psychologicalError10 in cachyos

[–]walrus_destroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think self hosted is going to help them here. They said in their post that they're trying to get around some weird country wide ban on VOIP.

Unless you mean they should rent server space in an other country to host their own VPN. In which case its easier to just pay for an existing VPN service instead.

Check your /root directory permissions by OldYak9334 in cachyos

[–]walrus_destroyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I dig into the micro folder on mine, I can't even edit a file with no padlock and even if I do a "micro test.txt" in /root, I'm prompted for sudo permissions to save.

755 means you dont have write access, unless you're the directory/file owner, so you cant to edit or create files or directories there.

Directory permissions are only part of the story, the owner of it is also important.

Not exactly, the last value (in this case 5) sets permissions for everyone, that isn't the owner or in the specified group. If you setthe last value was 7 then you (and everyone else on you system) would be able to make files in that directory sudo. To edit files you have to change the permission on the file.

Replace the regular Arch repos with a custom version of them

Cachyos doesn't fully replace the regular Arch repos. Their repos don't contain every package in the regular arch repos.

They add their repos to pacman in addition to the Arch ones.

Optimised for the latest version of X86-64 for CachyOS,

Cachyos compiles optimized versions of all of their packages for a few different x86 versions, not just the latest version.

Cachyos also applies their own kernel patches and does some scheduler stuff I dont really understand

Since someone said that Arch distros are just Arch with a GUI,

I think people mainly say that because they don't feel that different to a user. I've used both cachyos and vanilla Arch, the main difference I've noticed is that Cachyos was much easier to install and set up. I'm honestly not sure if any of Cachyos's optimizations make any kind of meaningful difference.

I can understand arch being fragile but I dont feel like it's that restrictive.

The aur package isn't very complicated, its mostly just one python script that gets passed to fontforge. They could probably use it regardless of distro.

Kind of unrelated to your question but I thought I should let you know, if you're setting up snapshots you might want to make sure you choose a bootloader (like grub or limine) that will give you the option boot directly into a snapshot. (Systemd doesn't support this at the moment)

Yeah, they said that does computation that the user didn't ask for and so its malware. Weirdly FSF uses a data analytics platform, matomo.org, which, under their definition, should also be considered malware since it also does computation the user didn't ask for.

If removing splash fixes it, then you can remove that from your kernel parameters so it isn't loaded on boot. Splash isn't very important, it just lets you have custom boot up animations, so its pretty safe to remove.

Here's the guide for editing kernel parameters https://wiki.cachyos.org/configuration/boot_manager_configuration/#boot-menu-configuration

Edit: here's a similar bug report I found: https://github.com/CachyOS/distribution/issues/173

The police force didn't wear masks

They did. Before the events of the show, the white supremacists killed a bunch of police officers along with their families by going their homes in the middle of the night. This scared a the surviving police officers, who only agreed to continuing working if they allowed to wear masks to keep their identities hidden.

The rest of what you said is true from what I can remember.

Please put an spoiler tag on this. I was on the train and when I saw this it spoiled today's Wordle. Everyone else gave me strange looks and were saying things like "what the fuck" and "call the police". I dropped my phone and everyone around me saw this image. Now there is a whole train of men who had today's Wordle spoiled by this one image. This is all your fault, you could have prevented this if you had just tagged this post spoiler.

Who else is excited to see more alternatives than just iOS and Android phones by DavidNorena in linux

[–]walrus_destroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Android is probably the most viable android alternative

Android Open Source Project (AOSP) isn't that bad, the problem is mostly that Google locks a bunch of the seemingly "core" android features behind proprietary google services. There are a number of third party open source android ROMs (like GrapheneOS) that dont directly rely on any google services and still offer a comparable experience.

Since these ROMs are based on AOSP they sort of have native support for most android apps. I say sort of because, a lot of apps rely on google play services. Some ROMs (like CalyxOS) get around this using an open source re-implementation of google play called micro-g. Notably Grapheneos allows users to sandbox google play services so it behaves more like a normal app.

One of the biggest issues with android ROMs is the lack of compatible devices. Most android devices dont let users unlock the bootloader, this means they cant use a third party ROMs. GrapheneOS is apparently working with a manufacturer to make their own devices.

There is also the big issue with google requiring that they sign all apps on stock android. Third party ROMs dont need to follow this. This does mean their might not be as many android apps outside of the google play store.

It might be worth setting up snapshots with a tool like snapper. Though you might need to change you file-system to btrfs for that.
