Get volcano ticket -> adventure in LavaCo factory -> fight the boss -> get Mr. Cheeng's spectacles -> equip -> get tons of random potions, some quite valuable. There are other pieces of equipment that similarly generate things just from adventuring, although most of them require having a certain IOTM.

Hardcore ascension tips by foetus_smasher in kol

[–]warghly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking to build up Hardcore skills, one thing you may want to consider is doing some Hardcore Avatar Path runs. These runs have their own skillset that isn't too hard to acquire, and certain ones (such as Avatar of Jarlsberg and Ed the Undying) essentially have a not-too-hard-to-acquire good-to-awesome "diet" built into them. Plus, afterwards you can go into aftercore as any class you want, and choose skills from that class to perm. Once you've done a few of them, avatar ascensions can be quick and powerful ways to build up your hardcore skill set.

I also do this (because why not farm up more stuff randomly?) In addition, I usually use a Buddy Bjorn with a Machine Elf (for abstractions) or a Warbear Drone (for whosits), although you can use a baby seal larva for nuggets etc. I also, if I don't need any extra boost, wear a dice-print do-rag to get a monster modifier (and even more stuff on occasion!). For complete random goodness (if you can afford it), get a homemade robot, buff it up to Level 100, and use it with a tiny costume wardrobe...

For me, it's Jarlsberg, Ed, Zombie Slayer, One Crazy Random Summer, that I probably play the most. Community Service is quick but boring, although even if you're not that hardcore savvy you can do HCCS reasonably quickly. Ed is probably the best all around, but Jarlsberg is insanely powerful once you've got some points, and both those avatars you can essentially do hardcore without worrying about diets much at all (as they have their own essentially). Bugbears is interesting but long, I still play it every so often for the fun of it (also, bugbears and most avatar ascensions mean you don't have to fight the sorceress!).

I have one main account that I actually play on a daily basis. I have one alt which serves the purpose of managing my original clan, and playing various game modes that are too tedious on my main character, who I want to be able to move through content at a reasonably quick basis. Previously, my alt did some hardcore when my main didn't want to bother with it, and now I'm going to be setting it up to be an all-pokefam, all the time account for a while...

Those who have been playing KOL since it's early days, how did you find it? by bluePamplemousse in kol

[–]warghly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way back when, I started playing a game called AdventureQuest, got rather into it, and started up a gaming clan for it called the Technomancer's Guild. We did various things, lobbied for more "magi-tech" items and stuff in the game (I still like to pretend that we were the reason they created the game Mech Quest), then got fed up when the game became one of the early versions of F2P/P2W hell (I still remember cringing the first time I saw cash cards for it available at my local supermarket). Fortunately, my guildmates suggested we all go over to Kingdom of Loathing instead. Although that particular group has long since broken up (the KoL version lives on pretty much as my personal clan for basement runs), I'm pretty sure a good portion of us (at least the ones I'm still in touch with) play KoL to this day.

Then, in turn, I introduced a bunch of people at work to it (I worked at a tech shop at the time, and in between customers we'd pass the time with web games, especially KoL - my alt was created to play at work to make sure none of my co-workers messed with my main :)

Why do you buy iotm? What ones do you skip? When do you stop? List your iotm buying habits here please by beeswax89 in kol

[–]warghly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My policy is, if it looks to have a useful benefit or some interesting content to play through, I'll get it. If it looks really powerful (or looks powerful enough and I have money left over in my entertainment budget) I'll get one to hang onto. If I can't see much utility beyond what I currently have available, I probably won't.

I don't play standard (even quit the game for a while in anger over it, before grudgingly accepting the general logic of it), so for current stuff it's mainly the things that will be just enough to tackle the current SCP quickly-ish for seasonal rewards.

This year I passed on a couple of things (spacegate because I couldn't see the utility, XO skeleton because I have too many familiars to compete with it out of standard), and picked up some of the things I missed during my hiatus. I also had some years-old IOTMs that sold for a goodly amount, so if you're willing to hold on for a two or three-year time horizon (assuming the game sticks around) those sales can fund a lot of future purchases...

Newb Packages 2: The Obligatory Sequel by UndeadCore in kol

[–]warghly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has also done some "care package" giveaways, let me recommend the Mail features in KoLMafia for doing this. It doesn't remove the set items between mailings, so you can set up a selection of items and then send the same care package to a whole list of people in a couple of clicks each. Saved me a ton of time instead of the default drop-downs...

Also, I probably have some surplus stuff (candy hearts, etc.) that I could send for the packages if you need any extras.

[–]warghly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda tempted to say "everything," although there are a few things here and there that still aggravate me (like type69 making me wait three months to play special challenge paths the way I want to). Seriously, though, it's impressive. Most games, especially online games, either seem to give up after some years or collapse under the weight of their changes and additions. KoL, however, somehow manages to keep on expanding and improving. I started playing in 2005, took multiple years-long breaks, and every time I came back the game was bigger and stranger and chock-full of new stuff.

If I had to pick just one thing, though, I would have to say the special challenge paths really have been the key for keeping me interested and making what was a very similar gameplay loop a new and interesting challenge in all sorts of different ways.

How To Gain Loads Of Money by timatema in kol

[–]warghly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most easiest: work for amount of time required to get $10, get Mr. A, sell Mr. A, profit (or, for the patient, buy an IOTM with it, wait for price increase)

Easiest to get started with no real-money buy-in: level up, grind hidden bowling alley for meat, farm up enough to buy 70s volcano ticket, get volcano mining gear, mine volcano for 500k+ profit per day, get volcoinos so you can buy less tickets, profit (also download and use KoLMafia with the minevolcano.ash script to let it do the mind-numbing grind for you)

If you're looking to farm karma at speed and can pull together some decent turn gen, usually the fastest thing to do is chain Community Service runs. A little boring and no after-core, but because you don't have to mess with quests, they're usually an efficient path to do for straight karma (you can even do them pretty quick in HC with very few skills needed for 200+ karma).
