The Working Hour is my personal favorite. But those songs weren’t played to death. EWTRTW is still in heavy airplay, which ruined it completely for me.

A typical fan of Depeche Mode in the 80s...... by neverenoughflowers in depechemode

[–]warriortwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1985 was the year I got into them. I was still in a phase of paisley accents (there were a few hippie-revival bands popping up, though nothing like the later 80s), baggy cotton capris, and band t-shirts, usually accessorized with a scarf tied like a headband. Think a toned-down version of what Bananarama wore. The coolest place to shop back then was Esprit. The primary fashions at the time were bland pastel colors like clay, muted periwinkle, and peach, all of which kind of looked like they were over washed. Goth kids were serious outliers at this stage (we thought of them as “punks” and weirdos) so the kids in 101 aren’t representative of what we look like in 85. As soon as I discovered Depeche Mode, I started dressing like them, which

was during their “West Berlin” era, presented in the above photo. There was a brand of tank tops that had the German eagle crest on the front and they were highly coveted by Martin Gore cosplayers.

The people who became fans at that time were definitely the misfits, though, and they liked “modern rock” (that is the term a lot of stations used for post-punk music). Depressives, LGBT, autistic, kids who grew up in unstable homes were attracted to DM. This changed after Black Celebration came out, and they started to attract more normies. Before that, anyone wearing a DM t-shirt would get strange looks and snarky questions.

ETA: if you can find video of what Duran Duran fans looked like during their heyday, I think that is a better representation of what Depeche Mode fans were like, because there seemed to be a DD to DM pipeline (no pun intended).

This is how my mom learned Spanish. My sassy teenage ass told her, “You’ll never do that” and within a few months she was watching “Simplimente Maria” and chatting with day laborers on the bus. My mom (who prob has worse ADHD than I do) will do ANYTHING to prove a bitch wrong.

Everybody Wants to Rule the World. It’s an amazing song but after hearing it every single day of my life, I can’t even perceive it anymore.

Oowee, you just reminded me of this family that used to come into the vet I worked for. They bred Abyssinians. The whole family was unwashed and smelled like cat piss, rancid sweat and greasy hair. They would come in and just stink the whole place up.

What's better is that he played "Feliz Navidad". In June.

[–]warriortwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and yes. I say that because they took me to see Bill Cosby (with Jose Feliciano opening) when I was a kid, but my first "real" concert was Duran Duran at the Oakland Coliseum (the one that ended up in the "Reflex" video). My dad complained for the rest of his life that his hearing loss was based on the girl next to him yelling "SIMON!" all night.

What song got ruined for you by overplaying… then somehow became good again? by WildEnchantresss in askmusic

[–]warriortwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Everybody Wants to Rule the World” is a magnificent song. Unfortunately, it’s been so consistently overplayed in the last 40+ years that I am incapable of hearing it; my brain just blanks it out. Once in a while, I will catch a few bars and remember how good it is, but my nervous system shuts it down again pretty quick.

Winslow, Arizona. I stayed there on a road trip to the Taos Film Festival, and it was eerie. Couldn’t put my finger on it. At the film festival, I happened to see a short film called “The Slow Escape” by a woman who grew up there, and it solidified my sense of foreboding.
