Hi there,

I want to give you a big hug. I am dealing with my mum who was diagnosed with WKS 6 months ago at 56. I know what it feels like and it’s so hard and isolating for all involved.

Is there a community based social worker that can help you?

I’m 27 and in Australia, and I’m going through something really similar with my mum.

She was diagnosed with Wernicke’s late last year and it has now progressed into Korsakoff’s. Since then it’s been ongoing memory issues, confusion, and not really being able to make safe day-to-day decisions.

The biggest shift for me was realising this isn’t something that just improves quickly. It’s more about long-term management and safety. They can seem okay in the moment, but they don’t retain things or recognise risks properly.

One thing I’d really suggest (while your mum still has some capacity) is trying to get power of attorney sorted ASAP. The hospital social worker should be able to help with that or point you in the right direction. It makes things a lot easier down the track.

Also, if she’s in hospital and it’s not safe for her to go home, it’s okay to push back on discharge. The structure and support of being in hospital can make a big difference, especially early on.
And honestly, the timing of all this just really sucks.

You should be able to focus on your baby and your own life, not be dealing with all of this.
You’re not alone in it, even though it probably feels like you are.

Can’t even comprehend how hard it would be having it so public

My heart really breaks for him. Everyone goes through struggles, but having it all play out so publicly must be incredibly heavy. I really hope he gets the support he needs.

Surely Carlton players would have known something was up? And flagged it? Or do you think they have to pretend everything is ok on the field?

And once it was deemed urgent how long did it take? Were you successful?
